- David Bowie - Warszawa- Live 1978
Warszawa was originally a track from David Bowie’s album, "Low", released in 1977, the first of the so-called “Berlin Trilogy”.
The audio of this live version from the ’78 tour, is from the 2005 remaster of David Bowie’s 1978 album, “Stage”.
Also included is a couple of short sections of Art Decade, also from the 2005 Stage remaster.
"Stage" was recorded live at the Philadelphia, Boston and Providence shows, in Spring ’78.
The video footage used here, is mostly from the final night of the 1978 tour, in Tokyo on the 12th of December.
This is not the original version of Warszawa, from “Low’, so we need not go on about the brilliance of the track. And anyway, as is usually the case, Chris O'Leary has written the last word on it, on his excellent blog, Pushing Ahead of the Dame:
bowiesongs.wordpress.com/2011...
But at least I should state that Warszawa was the show opener on the ’78 tour. Bowie chose to commence the show and divide it up with three of his Low / Heroes ambient tracks, interspersing the rockier numbers. Obviously opening with Warsaw was about as far away from a standard 70’s rock show opener as it was possible to get. Then as the set began to heat up, after tearing the roof of with the stomping and abrasive Blackout, he brought things back down again with the funereal Sense of Doubt. Later in the set, after the crowd pleasing Ziggy section, he again slowed the pace right down with the gorgeous Art Decade. One wonders what some of the audience thought about this unusual pacing. Someone who did attend, commented on my Sense of Doubt video that during the opening Warszawa, you could have heard a pin drop.
Anyway, here the band make a miraculous recreation of Eno’s multi-layered synth masterpiece. Bowie wisely doesn’t attempt a rendition of the latter parts of the original vocal, passing over that duty to violinist Simon House to make his interpretation instead.
Thankfully this section of the Tokyo footage was mostly very well shot and edited. Tho’ it’s a pity they missed the beginning of Bowie’s singing. I tried various ways to recreate that moment, but I could not come up with anything that looked authentic enough to me.
Apologies to Simon House, who played his violin solo in a very different ways on the Stage audio and the Tokyo footage - I did the best I could, but creating a perfect match was simply not possible.
There are a few other continuity issues on this video, due to unresolvable differences between the two sources, but I wont mention them here, for fear of spoiling your viewing and listening pleasure, dear fellow Bowie fan!
Including a bit of Art Decade is for a few reasons. Firstly, it is to make use of the only bit of verified footage that I am aware of, of Art Decade being performed on the tour. It would be good to make a video of the entire track, but there is simply no footage, other than this tiny fragment. And I thought, Well, Art Decade is the next track on Low, after Warsaw.
Another reason was just to find any excuse to use the extraordinarily beautiful zoom of Bowie from the short “Reporting Scotland” interview from ’78. I slowed it right down to make the most of it, and a beautiful little soundtrack was needed.
But mostly, the main reason is that even though the work of the synching and editing was mostly finished last week, I could not decide on the right beginning or ending. I vacillated between many variations. For the ending, I thought I had settled on using part of the Janet Street Porter interview from ’78. It’s just before he goes on stage, and she asks him, "When you go onstage, you start with a very slow number, what impression are you trying to make on people?" And he answers, 'I've been eating Stilton, do I smell like it?" It's hilarious and a perfect intro in a certain way. But then considering how deep Warsaw is, and the mood of this weekend, it just doesn't feel right. So I scrapped it, and the Art Decade ending felt sorta suitable.
Anyway, it seemed important to me to get this very appropriate video out there for this very important Bowie weekend.
Hope you dig it!
Do me an' yerself a favor - watch it in the Highest Def available with the sound UP LOUD!

Putting this video together was another huge labour of love, made with love and with respect for the source.
I don't own the rights, and I'm not making any money out of this etc. Just a fan making videos for other fans.

Greetings from Warszawa. We have a beautiful mural with David Bowie. It's on Żoliborz, part of our city where David had a walk in the seventies.
czesc od Anglia (Manchester). Je lubie polska, to jest bardzo ladny. Moy dziewchyna jest od polka, i ja mowie (troche) po polsku, ale ja jest nie dobry!

I saw this live, from the front row. It opened the concert, and was stunning.
Tears from beauty and thoughts of their neighbours in ukraine
First song I saw live in concert. In the Garden
Lucky duck
Lucky you! 👏🏻
I would still be awe struck and years later in a Bowie coma! Lol! Thats awesome! As this plays in the background Im just trying to get a small sense of what that must of been like! I can't imagine!🕊⚘
This is the soundtrack of the life, death, and re-birth of the capital of the land of my birth. Bowie captures the essence of the tragedy and hope of a beautiful city brutally erased by the minions of Schicklgruber.
Peter Piotrowski that’s a beautiful little paragraph, thank you.
Popłakałem się, pozdrawiam, Władek Piotrowski...
Love and compassion for tortured place in it.
Hmm, interesting take, however, I seem to remember reading long ago that Eno did all the music, DB heard it and simply laid down the vocal melody. If I'm wrong, someone will correct me. Wahi' Valleys
You Have understood fully the meaning of this wonderful track!!!Very good!...
I love how Adrian Belew is just like: "Well, I can at least smile for the camera."
James Kubik He's always been such a good sport.
Adrian Belew is a ham for the camera :)
My gosh what a gorgeous man and beautiful creative mind; and what wonderful music he gave us !
Brian Eno wrote the music.
@@cactaceous eno is credited as a co writer.
@@cactaceous yes but it's infuence was Sląsk.
Yes indeed! Beautiful man!
Warszama sounds like a cold space and like forgot spaceship with astronaut. Can't describe my feelings in the moment of listening, I just want to say that this song I will remember for a long time
like a city left alone
I'm born and raised in Warsaw and the city described in this song doesn't exist anymore. Now it's a vibrant, lively beautiful city with an insane history.
But in the 70s it really was an incredibly depressing city yet still loved by grandparents and my parents.
its also full of entitled losers and its the most expensive city. most overrated one@@MsBlonde0000
I'm Listening and crying.
I'm Polish from Krakow listening to this piece in Chicago USA.
I'm overwhelmed.
Thank you Mr. David Bowie.
This is powerful and monumental !!!
oh tears
Hermosa tu ciudad, la conocí el 2002.
I'm not Polish.
I live in Warsaw.
It is time to stop crying.
Piotr, ja rozumiem.
Peter, please don't cry my friend, please be happy, great Polish friends for life :)
The Spirit of Brian Eno is in this enigmatic piece
Is that him on the grand piano?
@@Mthesale No.
Totally agree!
He produced it! Low was an amazing album
@William White ohhhh. Thanks for the clarification
I love the Low album and Warszawa is the best song on it.
nallly Warszawa capitol of Poland. Violins bring little bit of polish Highlanders music
nallly I'd argue Subterraneans.
Carlos Alomar's conducting was the best part of this marvellous piece of sound and vision, but only just. Simply flawless.
Sound and vision... I see what you did there
One of the most under appreciated musicians ever and I think my favorite backing member for Bowie
He opened his concert on tour with this in the year I saw him, live. It sounded so gorgeous and haunting and then the greatest concert I have ever been to, was on.
Same here
very epic. im jealous
Yes, saw it in Philly, 1978. Unforgettable.
Me too I was there@@Sweetiesmom09
Despite its stylistic diversity, David was above all a composer of expressionist aesthetics, always close to drama, depth, anguish and the deep and tormented vision of life that seems to emanate from the metaphysics of man
as of his very deep nature !
I saw this tour in Kansas City just after my 18th birthday, and it changed my life. There was such a mystique about Bowie at the time, which can't be understated. We didn't have access to his videos whenever we wanted, and I only knew him through his music and album covers. FWIW, I remember Art Decade so well. There was a white spotlight on Bowie, which broke up into three or four colored spots that floated about the audience, finally returning to blend into a white spot on Bowie again at the end. So simple and elegant. I feel so lucky to have experienced that show.
I had a period of time when I missed hearing some of his albums (1976- 1977).
Recently, I heard this song. It is a masterpiece. The music is hauntingly beautiful with raw emotion. No lyrics were necessary to appreciate the song ; the instrumental alone was enough to tell a story.
How come he could make music not just beautiful, and so timeless??
Yes its so timeless, you know I'm a teenager rt. I know a lot of people in my age who loves David Bowie too. He is just amazing.
This very piece affected me when I saw it in live in 1978, it brings many emotions, even now. x
The violin solo elevates this above the studio version. Utterly beautiful.
4:03 - "Damn, David, you should have given me something to do here..."
Adrian
This music is so good it makes me cry. It always has. RIP David and thank you!
I listened just now and had a few tears. Haunting and beautiful, like Bowie
Joy Division loved this.
Indeed, no Band and certainly no Closer without Low...
Ian actually used to steal bowie records he couldnt afford
350125GOW me too!
Warszawiacy/Warsawian like it too.
They also loved the drum sound on "Low."
This is just as good as the studio version, if not better. Trying to hit high notes while preforming live can be a huge risk, so they accounted for that in the most creative way possible, by replacing Bowie's vocals with that amazing violin. And the way they tied in Art Decade's intro and turned it into the end of *this* song was really cool. I loved this
i am not a rckstar, i'm a ★
The first song was created by David how he felt in Warsaw O BOY ! You can fell the black cloud of ghettos & saddest feeling ,& I know ,I was borne there
Brian Eno wrote it alone while Bowie was taking the trip through Poland w Iggy Pop.
Wow, this was insane
Nathaniel Jordon do you enjoy. ?
Insanely good
I am from Warsaw from Poland!!!!! Thak You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yaaaay!
I'm from Krakow ...living in Chicago and sending you2❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Krakow I WARSZAWA to tak Jak Chicago and New York.
Lol...lol
1978 was the year I got my first real stereo and bought the LOW album on 8 track tape : )
oh God, how i really love him at the age of 30+
Me too❤❤
this song is a religious experience
When I first heard Low it was like a religious experience. I was 16 yo. in the midst of a teenage depression because I realised I was gay and I was Catholic living in N. Ireland. i always interpreted Low as a reflection on Bowie 's mental health like my own. This was my first ever Bowie concert I had attended. God I miss him syill 3 yaears later and I will miss him until the day i die. RIP David xx
Your experience almost describes my own experience, except I was growing up in Oklahoma when "Low" was released. Warszawa still sends shivers of wonder and beauty down my spine. Being gay in Oklahoma in the '70s, the mere idea of David Bowie was a beacon of hope for my very lonely self. When he passed away I was struck at how beloved he was the world over. This also brings me joy. Thanks for sharing.
@@br.martindallyosb1147 Your not alone give me your hand..David bowie saved my life and i know you will understand what that means. take care
@@noelcampbell9239 I am glad you are here and I celebrate Ireland now being a rainbow nation.
Spiritual and clears my mind
LOW is the most masterful David Bowie album ever for me. My most favourite work of David's is his Berlin years. Just extraordinart x

...Pamiętamy
We remember
Before my family moved to the states in '66 we had to go to Warszawa to get our paperwork etc. done,
My dad decided to take 9 year old me for a walk through the ruins of the city the Nazis left behind. First time I heard this tune it brought me back to that moment in time.
It should have been no surprise to me when many years later I learned that it was Bowie's walk through Warszawa that was also the inspiration for this tune.
BTW the violin playing brought tears to my eyes. This is the essence of that instrument in a nutshell.
I play guitar like a million other people and though a few other instruments do it well, nothing can express the human element like a violin.
Spellbinding - only David Bowie could think to write and sing this. Also the music, along with his friend, Brian ENO..... Pure Brilliance!!
thanks for the huge labour you did to put all these pieces together
this is the first anniversary and we all are still so sad he's just unforgettable and irreplaceable
Always listen to this song i am so proud of living in warsaw for a couple of weeks xx
So proud that you write her name in lower case.
You did it again, Nacho!
The world will never cease to remember how gorgeous a man David was owing to your beautiful videos.
just so relaxing ... miss you bro
I get shivers every time I hear this.
Ken H me 2 !
Fabulous!! Low was such a ground breaking album and tracks like this have really stood the test of time.
This is a masterpiece Bowie must be looking at us from heaven this is sublime
Looking down from Heaven?
Despite the little cross of gold around his neck, I don't think he was a Christian. 🙁
I've never listened to the Low album nor visited Warsaw and Poland but this beautiful creation gives me such vivid impressions of the humanity living alongside the Soviet grimness!
You must visit Warsaw, will change your mind😊
As you should. Check it out the Berlin Triology: Low, "Heroes", and Lodger
Absolutely brilliant. This has always had a deep impact on me. I am learning to play this on the eve of David Bowie's birthday.
Stunning! I miss him so.
I so love this. I have been a David Bowie fan for a very long time. I remember Space Oddity (I was in junior high school) but really got into his music when Ziggy Stardust came out. I am so grateful to see videos like this I never got to see when I was younger. It reminds me how much (now I will sound like a Hallmark card) he was an enduring part of my life, in all his musical incarnations. What is really amazing is that after listening to him for 40 plus years, I can still go back to his seminal '70s work like this and it sounds just as groundbreaking and fresh as it did then. Thank you!
Thanks for commenting. I never tire of him, during this era.
I couldn't agree more with your post. Bowie forever!!
@@dexterdog717 I knew this song , so beautiful , want to hear what there was on the other face , and then I loved so much this song , I slept each night with this mucic , I was 15 old :)
Simplesmente arrepiante essa música! Emocionante. Escuto-a há 40 anos e a cada audição é uma emoção delirante. Bowie é o grande das artes do século XX. Ou quem sabe até do 25.
the ghosts of europe, he felt them, and they spoke to him.
love to Warszawa... Bowie took your name to a most beautiful tune which takes me back to my happy youth... sincere love to Bowie fans and all in Warszawa
Brilliant. Just brilliant. What more can I say.
This video is nothing short of amazing, great job it looks like it sounds, superb!
Tanta majestuosidad y tanta belleza en una actuación. Sólo puede ser obra de genios como Bowie y Brian Eno.
Happy Birthday David!🌹Beautiful 🙏🏾thanks Nacho! ⚡️
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BELOVED DAVID!!!!!!
LOW is such a brilliant album. Was on repeat back in the day! Very underrated, and one of my favourite albums. Amazing experimental and ambient tracks. HAPPY 75th, SPACEBOY! R.I.P DAVID BOWIE ROCK LEGEND AND ICON!
I was so lucky to see this live in 1978 in MSG. So quite in the whole place, everyone was so just enthralled.
In this year, in this time: Excellent and heartbreaking.
I wonder if Bowie and Eno realised they'd created an entirely new musical genre in the late '70s which would open to door to countless writers, groups and solo performers?
Este disco cambió de vida. Cuando oí esta canción supe que algo no sería igual. ¡Gracias!
Can't believe so few views I have this double album in yellow vinyl at home.
I only ever had the black vinyl first release, my very first Bowie purchase when I was 12.
hippy birthday bowie..i lo ve you forever💖
Stunning instrumental! Always loved it.
Agreed!! Nothing better than an "instrumental" in which the singer is actually singing. No "instrumental" is good without singing.
So moving, so poignant.....raw emotions.....love it x
I saw this tour when I was sixteen, BingleyHall Stafford UK.Loved his music then, love it still.
Can’t thank you enough for posting this, it takes me right back.

It touches my soul and my ears...fantastic, no words.Play it for us from heaven David...RIP....
this song really shows how soviet Warsaw was, but right now it is totally different city- good bless
Warsaw was communist city, never Soviet. We Poles never belonged to Soviet Union.
This piece is a work of art. It's amazing what Bowie and Eno managed to convey with Warszawa, in parts it feels like a Tangerine Dream composition.
Great footage, by the way. I never thought I'd see film of this tour!
So beautiful.
Saw this at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. He announced the concert was being recorded for a record. He and the band walked out with the stadium lights still on. There seemed to be some confusion in the audience for a short period until everyone realized yes, it was David on stage.
Another great one Nacho! Love Carlos "conducting". Bowie trying to keep a straight face in the beginning. Great job. Love on ya!
Reminds me of the place beyond the pines, fantastic movie
Beautiful Birthday Gift, thanks Nacho
I saw this tour at Boston Garden in 1978, I will never forget it as my life changed after that night for the better.

Agree ... very few gives crédit to Mr. Eno ...in the trilogy
Great video! Thanks for sharing! I love this song - strange, eerie and beautiful! Among all the fantastic albums by David Bowie, Low is one of my absolute favorites! I will miss him for ever, but he lives on through his music!

This is ridiculously beautiful
Thank you for this video of such an iconic and beautiful performance! Your added insight and information was a pleasure to read as well. Looking forward to more, as I can't imagine there is an end to the study of Bowie!
I am still saddened since his passing, but there's something about his musical legacy that comforts me in my life's journey, and that he is just further down the line somewhere, or in the stars...wherever he is supposed to be.
Thank you. Yes, there's no end it seems. Ideas for new and fascinating video projects present themselves almost daily!
Magnifique ..
Awesome stuff as always Nacho! Cheers for the upload! :)
