  • Hi everyone! I'm so happy to be back after a nice break 😌 I often get asked what it costs to start making rugs or start a rug business. So, here's an estimate of what I've spent (though, realistically, I've spent even more than this). I hope it helps give you a transparent look at what it might cost you over time!
    I'm so happy to be partnering with Tuft the World (tuftinggun.com) for this video. As you probably know, I have used their products since the very beginning of my tufting journey and they have always served as a one stop shop for me, even before this partnership.

    I’m a leather craftsman/saddle maker. I use wool shears on sheep skin to level and trim the wool padding on the bottom of a saddle, along with other things I put sheepskin on such as rifle slings and occasionally some chaps. You won’t regret getting the shears, they are FAR superior than hair trimmers and leave a far better and even look. I recommend the Premier 4000s, it’s pricey, around $330, but it will last you decades, if not a lifetime. I’m watching rug making videos because I want to make a really nice rug for my store front, and who knows, offer rug making as a service as well later on if/when I’m any good at making them. Thanks for the tips on getting started on that trade, always looking to expand my horizons.

    I have bought a tufting gun from Amazon before and I totally agree with everything you’re saying! When I used it for the first time, not only did a screw come loose and I had no idea where it belonged to, but it short fused on me and practically exploded in my face! I tried to return the product but because it was from a third party seller, but they refused to give me a refund even though I mailed it back to them. I had to talk with amazon’s customer service several times to argue about giving me back my money and in the end they did. In the end it’s definitely not worth it to buy from Amazon!!

    Hey AJ thank You SO much for doing these videos. I'm a tufting-neophyte, and I really Love having You as my Mentor.
    But i do know something about toxic products and how it can affect your lungs. The fact that you are able to smell the product, isn't necessary an indicator, that it's a highly toxic product. the most toxic products don't always have a scent to 'em. The thing that's need-to-know here, is security codes. every chemical has them, and its crucial to know how to read them (If you wanna stay safe). if its toxic for your lungs, a simple facemask wont help, you'll need a closed-system face protection instead (yeah , i have no idea what its called :) )
    Security codes will alarm you if you need a heavy breathing system.
    If you know how to read them
    Stay safe and wonderful

    I had no idea the cost would be so great. It would be such a fun craft to do but the cost would be so high that I think they would be extremely challenging to sell. I was always upset with rug makers who sold there rugs at such high prices but I can see the base material alone would be so expensive you’d never be compensated for all the necessary materials and time to make it lucrative.

      @@CherishedCustoms they have a point though. Most custom rugs are going for $150 for a 3x3 which by standards is expensive for a rug. Finding a audience for that price point would be hard for conversions. It’s not like selling a $30 shirt. Especially during a pandemic where the economy is in saving mode.

    • @aspen1713
      @aspen1713 Před 2 lety +14

      you can cut costs if you don't mind a more rudimentary / time consuming set up :) You could make your own frame (I've seen a few videos with rug makers just using a few pieces of wood and some nails). I hand draw all of my designs onto the cloth, you don't need to spend money on a projector unless you're really planning on making rug tufting your business/on a larger scale. You also don't need a tufting gun, you can buy a cheap needle and do it all by hand (which is what I do. More time consuming and a bit painful on the hand/wrist, but much cheaper.). If you end up selling rugs, you can always use the profit to invest in higher grade / quicker tools. :)

      It's really not that expensive if you do it as a hobby. She's really going for top of the line stuff. I got the cheap stuff for a fraction of the price and they look amazing. Wanted them for outside in tents, so didn't want anything I would care damaging. Art is very much like that, you can do something for 15 bucks that could also cost you 500 if you really went all the way with it. I get my yarn from thrift shops and use carpet adessive glue. I don't even put fabric on the bottom lol Edit: I did already have a projector for murals though, so that did cut the price a lot.

    Hey there; thanks for the video. Any updates on finding zero VOC/hydrocarbon glue? I have a gas mask to use, but I’m concerned about putting these VOC’s into the environment at all.

      You really won't find any zero VOC glues that are not prohibitively expensive

    I love your videos. I found you after purchasing a green gun from AliExpress. It arrives in two weeks and I couldn’t be more excited. I still need to find out where I will put my frame (my house has been taken over with other crafts.) lol
    My question to you is something that I don’t hear anyone talking about: hearing protection. How loud are these guns? It seems that working on a pattern for hours, more people should wear ear muffs? I know you have a different gun than the one I purchased. But what’s the sound experience with yours? Are you driving the neighbors crazy? 😂 💕

      Let me know how it goes!
      I usually wear noise-canceling headphones. The guns can be pretty loud. I live in an apartment complex where it's common to hear construction going on, so I don't think it's an issue. Plus, my tufting room doesn't share any walls with my neighbors, so that helps!

    • @SherittaNesbitt
      @SherittaNesbitt Před 3 lety +1

      Since you don't have a space that is well ventilated- do you have an area outside you could go to? Even a park with a table would work as long as you have enough time for it to dry. At home- even if you wear a mask, those fumes will continue to exist in your home for hours if there isn't any ventilation.

    • @hannahfyy
      @hannahfyy Před 3 lety

      @@SherittaNesbitt there really isn't a way for me to get my frame out of my apartment, and then on top of that I could not stay outside long enough for it to dry (especially because it is very cold right now). I haven't glued my first rug yet because I really don't know what to do.

    • @AJMAKES137
      @AJMAKES137  Před 3 lety +1

      If I was in your boat, I’d stick to wall hangings using pvc glue for a while. Unless you find an alternative adhesive with no VOCs or figure out a way to glue outside. I’ll let you know if I find any safer alternatives!!

    • @hannahfyy
      @hannahfyy Před 3 lety

      @@AJMAKES137 thank you so much! I'd love to know if you find anything. As for glueing outside, how bad would it be to glue off the frame? I think I'd be able to glue outside if I could cut the piece off and then glue, but I know glueing is supposed to happen on frame.

    • @AJMAKES137
      @AJMAKES137  Před 3 lety +1

      Actually, you have a great point! I’ve seen one other tufter glue off frame, I would imagine you just have to be careful not to move the piece around too much to keep the yarn in place. Might run into the piece curling on the edges? But I think this could be a great alternative option for you given the circumstances. I say give it a try!

    I'm q chef but I'm also an artist. I decided to give this craft arey because of all of the ideas that pop in my head. I found the gun on amazon. It took 2 months to arrive but it looks like a good one. I haven't use it yet but honestly doesn't look bad and it had good reviews. It was just so late, but again we are in a pandemic, it came from china, then was stock in New York for a while. I had to call for them to send it. I almost loose it, they where going to send the package back. Now I need the other materials. Thank you! It is a lot but not so much. I can spend the $1,000 easy. Thanks for this video!!!

    While I can see how the tufting fabric would be better with a gun, I feel like that'd be really bad for punch needle? Like I use a particularly loose monks cloth and I find sometimes when starting a project that there's so much give that the loops don't want to stay in place immedately and I have to pull them from the other side

    Lovely video, I'm getting started with rug tufting and appreciate your walk through. For the mask, you should invest in a proper P95 NIOSH mask when working with things with VOCs. Simple cloth face masks aren't going to protect you and you'll eventually develop lung issues. I do a lot of work with resins, silicones, and toxic glues that also have VOCs and was taught to always wear one of these NIOSH masks. You can get replacement filters and they filter a lot of organic compounds, you basically smell nothing when you have this on. 3M makes these masks and they're a bit expensive to start with but they last forever and the replacement cartridges are fairly affordable. Anywho, looking forward to seeing more of your art! Your rugs are gorgeous.
