  • Charles Williams, who with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien was a member of the Oxford Inklings, argued that to truly bear others' burdens, as St. Paul insists we should, is to lovingly offer ourselves as spiritual substitutes for their interior fears and anxieties. When we do so we imitate Christ's loving substitution of himself for us in the Passion and Crucifixion. This movement of "substituted love," Williams claims, is "the law of Christ," and is made possible by our indissoluble connection, or "coinherence," with God and our fellow humans.
