      I guess the silver lining is going to be rom preservation. Most of these crappy products will fall by the waste side only to be sought after many yrs in the future only for SD cards and roms.

      Or they could steal romsets from arcadepunks if they want to make it seem like they did the work. Whatever method they used is not just lazy but also incompetent.

  • @PabstOban
    @PabstOban Před 2 lety +23

    Let me start out by saying... I know there is a ton of irony in being critical of a company who already puts out a retro console that from hardware to software was stolen and probably built with child labor... but I digress.
    While there are 100,000 games on this box, this is probably the 10,000th retro box like this that has been mass produced and all by the same country.... China.
    That being said... holy shit China, can't you get your shit together?
    If one man can put together a RetroPi build, with a competent and filtered rom dump, and put in a reasonable amount of testing into each emulator and spot check... I dunno, maybe the two dozen games people MIGHT actually play first when booting this jam up... why can't a small team of Chinese pirates?
    I mean... they only have to do the rom dump filtering effort once. Outside of hacks and maybe newer language patch roms (which again, they aren't producing, just stealing)... they aren't making many new roms for these 20-40yo emulators. It's kind of "small/medium/large" size you'd have to create, then dump your already filtered roms into the buckets of the new build every time you do this. Its time spent now that you can replicate and not have to do later.
    Every time you built one of these you could test a different 24 roms of each build... and eventually... you could be confident you aren't using shit or repetitive roms at the very least.
    Who cares about a full 512gb SD card when what most people REALLY want could fit on a 128gb SD card. So save yourself money there and actually hire someone to do this barely technical work already and stop making the same damn mistakes?
    I swear... these retro kits are just assembled with unsold tech stock from product lines that didn't sell as well as they hoped.
    This is probably how it goes down:
    Foreman: "Hey Bruce... warehouse 56, you know, the one in the desert manufacturing town from 3 years ago we abandoned... there are like 1000 mini PC's and 2000 crappy controllers... what are we gonna do with all that? Landfill?"
    Bruce: "I got an idea, lets buy a bunch of 512gb SD cards that are really 256gb SD cards, throw a buncha emulators in and 25,000 roms, but we'll copy the rom dumps 4x so its really 100,000 and sell the package for... I dunno.... $99."
    Foreman: "What a great idea Bruce! Make it $219 and we'll send a bunch to American CZcamsrs to review them. So... Can you have it ready by (looks at watch) lunchtime tomorrow?"
    Bruce: "On it sir! please don't turn my family into Soylent Green, hail great leader Xi Jinping".

    I'd recommend just getting an Android TV box and doing this yourself. I'd bet you could get this same box, for cheaper and if you watch to type of roms an emulators you put on it you'll get much better performance. If your buying a box like this for emulation I'm going to assume you don't care about downloading roms and emulators

    What a great review! It is hard to make a decision of what console to buy. I ended up getting a super console cube x3 because it had a fan in it to provide cooling. Purchased it off of Ali Express, it was much more cheaper than Amazon, had to wait awhile for delivery but no big deal when you can save almost forty bucks. You are right, the selling of these style consoles over and over is really getting old. Until a release of a reasonably priced console that will play all the games listed without a glitch, we are stuck but the ones that do play are so much fun!!

    And I know that I can learn watching videos how to make one of these but I will have to buy a computer that cost around $500 so that's the reason why I will buy one of these boxes I wouldn't spend over $200 because I know they are not worth it.

  • @bukko
    @bukko Před 2 lety +1

    I’m in the minority probably here, but I wish someday I could buy a 16-32 TB set up (meaning whole preconfigured mid / mini PC) that could play up to ps3/360 era games and would be all pre configured with care, for all systems (configured to a ps4 controller).
    I bought a 8TB hard drive that has a ton of stuff through ps2 era, and everything was “mostly” cared for but one example is the configs were not updated from Xbox and I didn’t want to buy and get used to a new controller. Other things were preferences for scan lines and wrong aspect ratios, or just personal set up that they did nothing with. When I agreed to buy it I double checked to make sure they were able to accommodate my request for certain settings and configs, and they basically ignored it all, and I noticed when booting it up. These little things just add to my frustration. At some point I’m cleaning it all up and config’ing again. Then I run an update or something and boom now all my folders are messed up and nothing runs right. This just stresses me out and I put it down until I go back a year later and remember why it wasn’t worth another headache so I’m stuck playing NES/Genesis/SNES again for a bit before I keep wanting more, but not wanting to do more.
    While I know having someone do the ultimate job in curation / config would be expensive. I just wish someone would do it so it’s near perfect. Literally plug the system in and play. No fuss at all.
    I do also have ps classics mostly running 0.9 with OTG just fine but there’s always something just “off” in my folders or I don’t want to take the time to load Sega CD stuff properly, or the screen is in 16:9 instead of 4:3.. etc. easy fixes but I am really done messing around with stuff myself. Some people live for it. I am not one that enjoys that. I do like to play whatever whenever and have it just, work.

    Man, is it possible to emulate every N64 game on PC without graphic glitches?

    • @freddiejohnson6137
      @freddiejohnson6137 Před 2 lety +1

      Not yet due to the way so many developers used custom compression and codecs for different games to get them onto a relatively small amount of space there is no one graphics plug in that seems to be able to tackle them all. It has gotten to the point where Sega Saturn emulation has caught up and in many ways surpassed it.

      @@freddiejohnson6137 Thanks for the info. I guess the 10 n64 games I own and the various remakes and remasters have to do for now. But that is very good news as I really miss playing Sega Saturn games. Die Hard Arcade is just...awesome!

      Youll need a pc build obviously...and who knows if there is a "good" plug n play that does that. You are asking a lot lol

    Wow, what a huge piece of crap. The reason why there are so many duplicates is because instead of using No-Intro roms, which are curated to not have duplicates, they use GoodSet roms which are filled with bad dumps, overdumps, hacks, trainers, etc. So it's pretty common to see one game have like 10 different ROM versions.
