    I personally use to do this with burnable CD's and flash drives mid 2002 with the goal of being able to play retro games on other peoples computers that have never seen any emulators or retro games with NO set-up whatsoever, plug-and-play. no front ends though, just open the CD or flash drive and all you'll see is 1 folder plus shortcuts to emulator executables. and these setups were always the old cartridge systems, no disk systems. that was GREAT in 2002.

    @7:27 omg - thank you for reminding me I own Gargoyle's Quest! I've been rebuilding my retro collection piece by piece. While I realize there is a "convenience" factor in getting a pre-built Batocera, there is a lot of joy [for some] in building your own collection from scratch and learning what to swap in & out of that 128GB!

      True, when you have the time, it's a nice hobby, I even created my own artwork and stuff in the old days, but alas time has become scarse... Still thinking fondly about all that time spent, but nowadays if I can save some time using a prebuilt thing, I surely will... I'm especially tired of complex and complicated stuff, like the whole hacking and compiling nightmares... yeah, there's fun in that too, but at my age, I wanna have things working without tinkering too much with it and once that it works, to find out it broke due to an update, so thanks but no thanks, I'm too old for that stuff, lol.

    I made my own Batocera flash drive recently. It started as a 128GB drive but soon, I cloned it to a 256GB drive and will be moving it to a 512GB flash drive soon.
    I've simplified the theme as much as practical so no bezels, music or video snaps. These bells and whistles are not my thing.
    It currently has Yuzu installed and running Switch games great on any medium powered PC. Game Cube, PS2 and Switch games take a lot of room thus the need to expand it further to 512GB. The process is simple. Image the 128GB drive, write the image to a larger drive and expand the share partition to the full size of new drive. Same process would work for upsizing this one as well and given the low price, I may do just that.

    5:02 something that comes to my mind when seeing all these combo emulation box drives, is what USB controller would work for the most consoles with the least amount of configuration? For example, I own a USB Xbox360 controller because that's the style of controller I played with the most, and also it's fully compatible with pretty much any windows game that supports controllers. But would that work for something like N64 for example? Or, would I need to spend hours dicking around with settings? I would much rather use ONE controller.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Před rokem +4

      Yeah I think any xinput controller is going to give you the best compatibility. Xbox 360/one/series controllers are probably the best choice.
      N64 always requires dicking around with the settings. Any N64 game that uses the C buttons as face buttons will be annoying, you'll have to remap those to face buttons. But any game that uses the c buttons as a 2nd stick (like for camera movements) will work properly. N64 is such a weird controller so you gotta customize the controller mapping on a per game basis if it doesn't feel right.

As a retro gamer I'll be behind in time, always, per definition, so yeah, this pendrive completely fills that hole in my heart! I plan on purchasing one soon, but I'm going to go "all-out" with it, meaning I plan on buying accessories and stuff. I'm even going to buy some accessories that let me watch free OTA Television on it, and an accessory that will let me listen to FM radio. If you're interested, I can share how I plan on doing this with you! I think it'll be a fun experiment.

      @@TechDweeb (A quick note: This is probably one of the longest comments I've ever made. I'm sorry for it's length, I hope I don't take up too much time, but I tried to explain what I plan on doing and how to do it).
      Ha! Thanks for that. There was a point in my life where I thought being a mad scientist would have been the coolest thing ever! Thanks for hearing out my ideas; I actually just got another one today too! I don't have an RP3+ yet, but I hope to try this stuff out when I do get one. If you want to try it out for yourself, go for it! I'd love to hear your thoughts on my ideas, and I'd love to know if you're going to try them out.
      Here are my ideas:
      1. How to watch free television on the RP3+:
      There's a device called the MyGica, which is a portable OTA (Over The Air) antenna. All you need for it to work is an Android phone, an app, and a micro USB-C. The RP3+ is an Android device (which can get apps), and it has USB-C, so I don't see a single reason why it wouldn't work. All you need to do is purchase the MyGica, download the PadTVHD app, plug the MyGica into your device, and launch the app. The PadTVHD app is currently being updated, so it's not in the Google Play Store at the moment, but I do have an APK for it. Hypothetically, you should be able to watch free OTA television with this method!
      Here's the APK: mega.nz/file/1DViWbqB#q5IX0yc7WSagf-uqer7yuGhp7ADsiQa11uN_l6Enptk (It's safe; I got the APK from Antenna Man's CZcams channel. It's in the description of his most recent video, "A Portable TV Can Save Your Life in a Weather Emergency). Here is an Amazon link to the MyGica: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08R5D5Z9D/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A2FK89ZO9NY4PJ&psc=1
      If you cannot or do not know what channels you'd pick up in your area, I recommend checking out www.rabbitears.info and going on the "Signal Search Map" section. It's very easy to use, and you can see nearby channels. I also do not know how strong this antenna is. I live 30+ miles from my nearest tower. Thankfully, the MyGica comes with not just one, but two antennas! One is stronger than the other. The only issue I see with this idea is that it may not be easy to carry around. I personally plan on getting a bag of sorts to carry around all of the attachments and controllers I plan on getting for the RP3+.
      2. How to listen to FM radio on the RP3+:
      The RP3+ has a built-in FM Radio app, which makes me assume that there is a chip in the RP3+ that works with FM radio, which is amazing because it's so rare for modern technology to include this stuff. From what I have heard, all you need to do is launch the app, and it should work fine. I did hear some people say that you need headphones to work as an antenna, but it depends on how far you are from your tower for whether or not you need to do that. Let's just say you are a bit far out from your tower, though. You can buy a radio antenna and just put it in your RP3+! There are two issues, though. I don't know if using this antenna will actually draw the signal in better. Like the OTA antenna, though, I don't see why it shouldn't. The second issue is that the RP3+ will think that the antenna is a pair of headphones, so it will try to play the audio through the antenna. My fix for this is to either just connect to a Bluetooth speaker or download an audio switcher app. I personnaly plan on using the audio switcher app, so I looked on the Play Store. I found an app called "Audio Switch & Audio Test". Again, hypothetically, this should work.
      Here's an Amazon link to the antenna I am looking at (there may be a better antenna that might work for this, but this is the first one that came to mind): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08G18VM72/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2X7IHOFTAZ9BA&psc=1
      -------------------------------------------------------------------
      These were my original two ideas. Why would someone want to do this? Because you'd want to watch TV and listen to the radio! Seriously though, it could come in handy in case of emergencies. Not only would you have a portable TV, but you'd also have a portable radio. You'd think your smartphone could do both of these, but most Smartphones don't have the chip to run an FM radio, some do, but it's rare. They might not be the best working antennas, but they would work. Both are good enough for emergencies or on-the-go use. The RP3+ could really help you out in an emergency. It could provide you with useful information in an emergency and then entertain you with games!
      Like I mentioned though, you'd probably need a carrying case for all of the dongles and attachments.
      I have a bonus idea that I thought of today also. I think this is something more people might be doing, but I tried to find some videos on it and I haven't seen anyone do it.
      -------------------------------------------------------------------
      3. How to play PS2, GameCube, and Wii on the RP3+ with it running good:
      I don't know all the details for this one yet, so I'll keep it simple. Download Retro Arch on Steam, get your emulators and roms on it, and just stream the emulators via the Steam link to your RP3+! I plan on downloading everything up to PS1 on the RP3+ and then downloading PS2, GameCube, and Wii on my Steam. So I can natively play everything up to PS1 on the RP3+ and then just stream everything else to the RP3+. This would only work depending on your connection, of course, but hey, you could get PS2 games running on your RP3+. I don't know all the technicalities of this either, but for a casual person, it would work.
      Again, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. I'd really love to see you do a video on this stuff, assuming the ideas work! Thank you for your time, I appreciate it a lot. God bless you and keep up the great work!

    This is so cool dude. I wonder... I don't know much about batocera but would it be able to run through one of this drives in something like the gpd win 4? If so, how do you tell the computer to boot into batocera and not windows ?

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Před rokem +3

      Yup. The GPD WIN 4 is x86 architecture based, so this should in theory work. You can choose the boot device like this:
      Insert your USB drive. Power on the device. Mash the DEL key, go to boot, and press Space on the first slot until the device listed is the USB Drive you want to boot it from.

      If it doesn't boot by itself you will need to get into your bios and set this as a USB boot device. Usually you can change the boot order in your bios very easily. I can't walk you through it because every bios is different. Usually you press f2, f11, f10, or the delete key on your keyboard while the computer is booting to get into the bios. Feel free to stop by my discord, there is a computer help Channel there and we could help you out if you can't figure it out.

      TO BOOT FROM EXTERNAL USB:
      Shutdown the Steam Deck fully, then enter the bootloader holding volume down and pressing and holding power until the startup sound. Select your USB drive from the boot list.
