  • Today on the channel, I finally get to drive one of the most elusive of all modern M cars - the BMW 1 Series M Coupe. Commonly known as the 1M, many argue this shouldn't be considered a "true" M car - but others say it is one of the best. Who's right?

    Much like other great cars of the past, be it a Supra or a Skyline, this vehicle is now beyond the "buy and use" crowd. It's too expensive for what it offers and it's too valuable to thrash around. A great car, but confined to the history books, in my opinion.

    The 1M comes with 4 cats, 2DP cats and 2 mid-pipe, remove the mid-pipe cats fire in set of straight pipes ( I have supersprint pipes) and this car comes alive, it sounds even better than stock too. It still passes the MOT with these cats removed and it’s so worth it. I love this car, the one I have now is my second and I just can’t get enough of it, it’s every bit as good as my M2CS, if not better due to the hydraulic steering. I also have the very rare Bmw performance seats too, and the are so much lighter than the stock but not as supportive imo.
    Great review too 👍

    Great review, thank you! The N54 engine is a love/hate affair. You need to replace the water pump, the high pressure fuel pump, the injectors (for latest index 12 versions, very costly now), and various gaskets, including the valve cover one. I have a FBO N54 in my 335is with DCT transmission, Quaife LSD, upgraded turbos, MHD/mapping, and xHP gearbox map. Putting out close to 500hp, it does goes like stink while providing respectable MPG even by today's standard. BTW, mine did a bit of blake smoke under power, but that went away when I had the turbos and injectors replaced (at the same time).

      @BMW1M Yep, i always say that the n54, n63, n73 and s63 have the fun sucked out of them by the affair with the fuel injector cost. I got mine for my e92 335i from a junkyard on later year 7 series, I have about 10 index 12's and the 6 that are in my car have been working perfectly ever since, but if I had bought those for $3000 new when I needed them, I don't know if it would have been worth it lmao, my car is only like worth $6k tops.

This car is very rare, Turbocharging was a bit of a novelty when this car was new, now every car is turbocharged. I doubt they didn't call it the "m1" because it wasn't worthy. I'd argue this is closer to a true m than a base m2 was (n54 has far longer legs than an n55 once you begin tuninng, though they feel really similar stock). I think they just didn't want to confuse this car with the 70's car, which I honestly think modern bmw wouldn't car about the confusion, as they add "M" to any and everything

    Wanted one desperately until I drove it after turning up in my 987.2 Cayman. Then the driving position seemed MPV like, the steering, gearshift and brakes were woolly and remote, engine sound was boring, couldn't drive home in the Porsche quick enough. They still look mega though.

    • @James-oo1yq
      @James-oo1yq Před 2 lety +2

      Sounds like you drove a bad example. The drivers seat can go very low, the brakes are great. Doesn't make a great sound on the standard exhaust, but neither does the Porsche. Try a sorted example, however the Porsche is tough competitor

      @@James-oo1yq The one I drove had the manual seats which go lower than the electrical ones, in it's lowest position it was just awful, especially set against the Cayman. Alright I'm 6'3" but even my current 140i goes much lower than the 1M. In isolation the 1M is lovely, but if you want a spórtscar, get a silly Porker, they are just much sharper at everything.

    Bought this exact car when I was 23. I might have drove it a little to enthusiastically but what upset me was the poor reliability...wastewater rattle, Oil leaks galore, camber/caster issues chewed up tires every 4.5 months (mostly my fault). When it was running it was a blast..Sold it at 40k miles after car spent too much time in the shop. Always dreamed of a proper NA M3 engine v8 .

    Once again, it proves that the best BMW, or any car, is one that is conceived and built by passionate people who asked "what if" rather than corpo suits who wanted sales or market shares. This is further proven that for each iteration of this car, probably ordered by said C-suits to "further the shares", further misses the point of the 1M. I mean, the F80 M2 is heavier than the 1M, and the G80 M2 is even heavier (and uglier too).
