Well during that time dragons flying overhead were a normal part of the citizen’s lives during the Targaryen’s reign. It’s like kinda just like merely seeing a hawk, eagle, falcon or some other bird of prey in a city while commuting to work.
Syrax has my favourite design thus far in the show. Meleys has the prettiest colors, but I like Syrax’ sleek head and horns, and her wings actually look like they could carry her. Something that bothers me about the other dragons including the ones from GOT is that they want to go for realism but then give the wings weird gaps between the back and first finger. They’d need the extra membrane Syrax’ wings have to create lift and actually fly.
Finally, another person who notices this epidemic of inexplicably terrible dragon wings! I've seen people call it "spoon wings" I like to call it "kite-wing syndrome".
They hire people who are supposed to know how anatomy works, no doubt studying animals to learn this - people who can make any animal imaginable with CGI and make them look good, and then their brains fall out when it's time to put the wings together.
Shame that they only did it right with Syrax, would've loved to see the others with proper wings.
@@blockEdragon Yes, I just noticed that Syrax is the only one that has that interdigital membrane connected to the body near its tail, the rest of them have it connected somewhere at their underarm. Syrax's wings remind me of those of bats thus it makes sense anatomically, based on real life examples, that they could support flight. However it's these tiny details that make it hard for me to place Syrax in one of the 3 alleged breeds of dragons that the producers said they developed for the show.
Thank you! Literally no flying vertebrate in the history of Earth has these gaps. Even birds, which don’t have wing membranes, have ample feather coverage where the wing joins the body. The inner wing surface is responsible for generating most of the lift and that section often has the longest feathers in some of the largest flying birds. Something as big as a dragon would need every square inch of wing surface possible. When I saw the first episode I was glad to see they fixed this problem in Syrax only to be let down with the other dragons.
The flight animation also looks wonky af in some of the dragon scenes but that’s a whole different discussion.
@@arde29 2:50 If you look closely, the Sunfyre appears to be a male version of the Syrax, having the same wing model when she sits down.
She also has a horizontal tail fan, which would probably help her steer and keep her tail from hanging.

Honestly, I think bonding with a young dragon is the best you could do in this kinda world.
It's very mobile and you can land in most places without having to worry about flatening half the neighbourhood. And by the time it's 15 to 20 years old it's already able to burn entire armies alive. What's the point of a big dragon when every dragon can fly and breath fire?
Imagine being Aemond and being forced to land outside of King's Landing and getting to the Red Keep by horse cause your dragon is too big for even the dragon pit.
I mean if you saw episode 10 you understand why having a bigger dragon is somewhat important. Vhagar literally bit Arax into pieces
@@TheDarkshark516 Ah, but the Dance is not at all a normal situation. It only happened because of certain circumstances coming together.
Normally all a dragonrider has to deal with is to beat down some rebellion or burn a treacherous Lord's armies.
Dragons fighting each other is bad for every house with dragons in their posession, because dragons killing each other for petty reasons is the biggest waste of invaluable ressources ever.
The Targaryens know this, hence Rhaenyra saying "The greens have dragons too". She knows that dragons grant them an advantage beyond measure, but if the other side also has dragons then war just means both sides will be throwing their best pieces into the fire for no good reason.
In normal times a smaller dragon is bae.
As a war machine, a big dragon is way more powerful, and gives better protection to the rider too I guess. As a helicopter, I'd agree that a younger dragon is preferable.
@@6whiteshadows well it depends on what the situation is when going to war having a hugh dragon as big and old as vhagar is pointless especially against a younger, smaller and faster dragon.
@@Mcherri I don't think that is supported by canon. Size of the dragon definitely does matter. Not only for inflicting damage but also for survivability and protection of the rider and its dragon..
Vhagar bit Arrax in half in a surprise attack. But Vhagar died fighting Ceraxes and Ceraxes also was a old and big dragon.
The only instance in canon where a dragon was killed by something smaller is in the storming of the Dragonpit. But those dragons were confined and couldn't really defend themselves.
I’m just not looking forward to Syrax and all the other dragon’s demise. I’m sad the Targaryens couldn’t move past their issues to save their family and their dragons. Syrax is so beautiful. Those dragons didn’t deserve to suffer.

Yeah no. They had over twice the budget per episode as game of thrones ever did. It wasnt budget. Syrax is noticably larger, but not by much. Why? Rhaenyra only ever rode Syrax for "fun" when she was younger. As Rhaenyra got older, she had Syrax constantly chained up, and had her food brought directly to Syrax. She never got to hunt. And she rarely got to fly anymore. She became lazy. And as we all know, dragons become stunted or grow much slower when kept chained up or arent allowed to hunt and fly freely.

She was mostly kept inside and ate only cooked food and never hunted on her own. So, like a turtle or shark, she grew to what was necessary or had room for. She's a spoiled Queen. 🥰
Budget reasons. There was a larger version of Syrax in the trailer but it was cut out of the show, probably because they couldn’t do the cgi

She did grow during the time jump, just not nearly as much, as someone else pointed out. Rhaenyra only ever flew Syrax for fun when she was younger, like in episode 1. The older she got, the less she flew. She had Syrax constantly chained up in the dragon pit or red keep and dragonstone, and had food brought directly to Syrax. She never got to hunt or fly freely anymore. The budget was over twice that per episode than game of thrones ever had.

GoT didn’t really give any of dragons personality, drogon was the main dragon, then viserion and rhaegal were essentially side characters. HotD dragons do have differences though which make them stand out, especially caraxes and vhagar

Wyverns lack the intelligence dragons do. More comparable to a traditional monster then the sub-tier gods dragons are. Literally wyverns are like animals and dragons can use OP magic and talk.
