Mark Hughes made his name as a player across two spells with Manchester United, and in this exclusive interview with The Coaches' Voice he revisits both in a fascinating insight into life at one of the world's biggest clubs.
Having come through the ranks at United, Hughes enjoyed three years of first-team football at Old Trafford before moves overseas to Barcelona and then Bayern Munich. He returned to United for what was a hugely successful spell at the start of the Sir Alex Ferguson era, playing a key role as United ended their long wait for a league title before adding nine more trophies over a seven-year stay.
A partnership with Eric Cantona taught Hughes plenty of new lessons about the game, before a switch to Chelsea led to more success in a star-studded team alongside the likes of Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli and Gianfranco Zola.
Hughes saw out the latter stages of his career at Southampton, Everton and Blackburn before retiring as a player in 2002.

Not Eric Cantona, but it was Sparky Hughes, that made me fell in love with Manchester United when I watch his gritty performance against Crystal Palace in 1990 FA Cup final. I'd say he's in the same bracket as Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Van Persie, and Rooney as Man UTD great strikers of the Premier League era

I still have the white cup winners cup shirt when he scored vs Barca. Amazing technique, one of the best.

A wonderful player. He had the heart of a lion and rescued United so many times. An absolute warrior and a genuine big-game player. Only Drogba could claim to be better in the biggest games.
We didn't beat Oxford in the League Cup though, they knocked us out after a couple of replays - Sorry Hughesie!

What I like about this channel is you see a lot of people who you have a an assumed view on and that they’re just one of those managers that float around bottom half teams or they’re done and dinosaurs in the game, but actually when they talk about football one-on-one to the camera you see how knowledgeable they are and how much they care

People don't realise these ppl are the cream of the crop. Its that its brutal at the top.
If the average joe were to manage ManUtd, it would not be inconceivable that they wil get a player revolt on hand and get relegated.

He was an amazing striker. Great technique and hard af! These managers that knock about at the bottom teams are limited by budgets. The knowledge he has from the world class coaches and managers he worked under is why he became a decent manager.

It is so sad to see our forwards playing like this now. Mark Hughes was a complete package. He might not be the top scorer but he contributed in every aspect of the game. True legend!

Always my favorite Man U player. Totally committed. Had skills to match. One of the few British players who could execute a proper overhead kick. Never made a dive to get a penalty. Could always be counted on to hold the ball. Never made a fuss though he was tough.
I always thought that AF sort of betrayed him when he let him go in 1995.

I always thought, what if Sparky would've/ could've played for England? He probably wouldn't have wanted to being Welsh, but what if there was an English bloodline in his family history? If there was (good possibility) and he did alternatively play for England in the late 80's and early 90's 1st team upfront with Lineker (2 completely different types of striker) also with Barnes, Gazza and all the other decent midfielders to supply him, he would have made a huge difference, especially at Italia 90 and maybe get England qualify for USA 94? Not to take anything away from the Wales team but they got nowhere in his time playing for them at an international level, I sometimes think what England could have won with his strong aggressive style, excellent finishing and his cannon ball power volleying.
