Mark Hughes enjoyed a glittering career as a player, mostly spent at Manchester United, before moving into coaching as manager of the Wales international team. He has since gone on to manage Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR, Stoke City and Southampton.
In this extended interview with The Coaches' Voice, Hughes talks at fascinating length about his entire football career, starting with both spells as a United player, short stays at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and a return to Old Trafford to great success under Sir Alex Ferguson. He goes on to describe his move into management with his native Wales, which led to a successful spell with Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League.
He also covers his time in charge at Manchester City, watching from the QPR dugout as City won their first Premier League title, and building an exciting Stoke City team that repeatedly finished in the top half of the table.

Brilliant interview, really enjoyed the career long insight. Still can’t believe he’s the Bradford City manager!

Hughes was a great manager for Blackburn, one of our best ever. Gave a young lad many happy memories. Playing in Europe regularly was a dream for me as I was slightly too young to remember the Premier League title win.

If ever anyone was going to score a volley it was Sparky, i was a kid when he came back to United from Barcelona and a massive Whiteside fan but Sparky stole my heart, he was hard as nails, took no nonsense and he lead the line by example, ill never forget the volley against Oldham, his volleys were supernatural, he wasn’t selfish either. Enjoyed so many moments at united because him, if only we had a striker like him at United today! Wonderful player, looks a lot healthier without the stress of management!

To any younger football fan, watch anything you can of his career. He was unlike anything you will see in the modern game. He was raw entertainment. I used to pretend that I was a poor version of Mark Hughes when I was a kid knocking around with my mates. One of my all time favourite players. I have paid the cost of a ticket just to watch him play. His footballing skills, mental attributes, style of play, contribution to other players... just totally absent from the modern game (and I'm not a United or Chelsea fan). As a player, I wished my team could have signed him...as a manager...I was gutted the rumours never came true when my team had the opportunity to acquire his services. As a man, he is a credit to his profession (as this interview attests). Without players like Mark Hughes, I'd not have bothered with football as a kid...It is just not as good these days without this type of player. He had a great partnership with Cantona and Vialli but I'd have loved to have seen him play along side Batistuta - the power of those two up front would be exhibition football (as it was with Cantona and Vialli so cant complain). I would love to see these players break up the focus on tactics and systems of the modern game - players then had inspirational determination. Even average players today have the option of private jets without putting in a shift.

Sven was a better attacking manager but thankful he signed Kompany, Zabaleta, Barry, Tevez etc some top signings but he was far too conservative as a coach too many draws
