- “Mascon Leather” - The Story Behind the Brand
:-:-:-:-:
They say, “Story is King”.
Everyone loves a good story.
Right ?
And everyone enjoys hearing a background story.
The fine folks at WHRO tv reached out and asked if they could showcase my story. My brand.
They didn’t realize what they we’re walking into. A house full of creativity, beyond my own leather.
What follows is the culmination of more than 4 days of filming, and a look behind the scenes at Mascon Leather.
Thanks to Kenny Hopkins and the crew for everything!! (Yes, he deserves an Emmy.)

I could easily have watched an hour of this. Leather, paint, iron & wood, you are all artists.
Well done and craft in good health.
Thanks for that!!
Great Stuff. I did the same after holding a senior position in one of the UK's top 100 international companies I quit to paint and do Leather craft. that was 20 years ago, I'm 65 now, a grandfather and life is just about perfect. Where we can we should follow our hearts.
Aw !!! Great story !!
Yes, indeed.
This video exemplifies the term "shining the light".Thank you for shining so brightly!
Thank you for that!
I purposefully waited until I had a good strong cup of coffee before I sat down to watch this and I’m glad I did because I’m blown away! The wheels look like they are always turning in your home and the creativity that comes from it is fantastic! I dabble in making leather wallets, not to sell but just to ease the stress in my life and I want to say that you are an inspiration to me and with that, thanks 👍🏼
Thanks for that comment! And thanks for the continued support!
A-mazing. You have been my leatherworking shaman since I first came across your videos two summers ago. It’s great to see you and your family living the dream and takin’ ‘er easy for all us sinners. Much continued peace and love to you all, Artie.
Thanks, Chris! I appreciate that!

3 years to where you are now? Man, as a new leathercrafter, I really look up to your work and really appreciate your videos! Congratulations and please keep plugging away both with leather and videos!! It is a routine of mine to wake up, drink a coffee and watch one of your videos
I quit my 20 year career day job 3 years ago. To do leather full time. I’ve been doing leather for many years. My lead time on orders got so long (37+ weeks), that it made sense to quit the day job.
Your wife is the anchor and the heart of your family. Bless you all.
Thanks!
She is!
Phenomenal. You have definitely set yourself and your brand apart. Keep killing it. Definitely looking forward to more content.
Thanks, Kenny! I appreciate that. And thanks for watching!
It is amazing to finally put a face to the brand. What a great video with your wife and kids. Great story, amazing product and unbeatable craftsmanship.
Thanks ! I appreciate that!
Came across this video, it opened the doors to the artist behind all the beautiful creations!
The home that art lives in, is blessed and has fun!
Thank you for sharing 🙌
Thanks for that! And thanks for watching!!
Such a positive and uplifting story - you're obviously in the place you were meant to be in, a place in which you demonstrate unswerving natural aptitude and quite breathtaking skills! Your boys look like they've inherited these amazing genes from you and Mrs Shell too. If I ever end up 10% as good as you at making wallets, that'll do nicely for me!
Thanks for that!
That was awesome! Im 49 and just started doing a little leather work just for myself and man i wish i would have started 20 years ago. Labor of love for sure. Made my first knife sheath and took me forever but I really loved every minute of it
Thanks for this!
Love the story 🥰 may God Bless your family, live in harmony and full of joy..
Every time I watch one of your videos I think my leather work Improves. Thank you!
Absolutely perfect!!!

Thanks, Matt!
You are living my dream. Don’t ever stop. It gives me hope that one day, I’ll be there too!

Great video! Very cool to get a glimpse of the man behind the curtain. Actually it was much more. It was truly a snap shot of the American dream showing what can become of hard work, attention to detail and the balls to go for it!
Aw!!! Thanks, sir!
Well said!
Outstanding! Thank you for letting us see a bit about you and your family.
You’re welcome and thanks for watching!
Artie - You are a true inspiration. I have modelled part of my approach and design based on what you have presented via Instagram and CZcams. Like you, I had enough of the corporate world and decided a year ago to focus my efforts into turning my craft into a semi-retirement business. Most of what I’ve learned came from you. Keep up the amazing work! I appreciate seeing a little more of the behind the scenes and getting to meet your beautiful wife and handsome sons. God bless!
I’m so glad I could be an inspiration of some sort. Have fun!
Cool story behind the brand and your wife and sons each creating in there own way . Thanks for sharing 😎
🤘🤘🤘
This was awesome. Great to be able to see the story come alive like that and very touching. Congrats on building a life that you and the family can be proud of.
Thank you for that! And thanks for watching!
That was a great piece on your background and family. Watching your videos is what got me started in leather working. Your videos also helped me get better at the craft of leather working and also taking photos to post. Your spot on when you talked about being able to spot one of your photos a mile a way, that is one of the things I look for the minute I get on you tube is that thumb nail of one of your wallets. Its also nice to put a face with the videos. Keep up the great work you do and I cant wait to see your next video.
What a great comment!! Thank you for that, Kerry!
Thank you for a little glimpse into your life. I have said it many times your Filmography has become something I look forward to watch every time you post. I wish I had a chance to learn in person from a great leather craftsman like yourself. Can’t wait for the next video to come out.
Thanks, Justin!
Just came across this video, don’t know how I missed it 4 months ago, but I did want to say you’ve made a huge impact on my own leather journey! Love the videos👏👏👏
Awe !!! Thank you for that! And thanks for watching! Regardless of when. 😉
Great story. Great leather. Great videos and photography. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for that!!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this video and your story. I only recently stumbled onto your videos and simply cannot stop watching them. I’m in that in-between place where the pieces to “something” are flying around me and I’m trying to figure out which ones to grab so I can use them to create my own story with leather. Thank you again - I find your work and your story both creative and very inspirational 🙏🏼
Thank you for that! And thanks for watching!!

Oh man oh man, what a beauty!! Im an Architect/leather craft also, and I've been following and learning from your art style greatly for almost 3 years, but I would never imaging your background story to be this wholesome! What an inspiring story!
Hope you and your wonderful family doing well! Always looking forward for more from you.

Artie, the first video I saw of yours, I connected with your brand. This was awesome to see your start into the business of leather craft. Thank you so much for showing us the tips and tricks. It was really cool to "meet" the family and see their art form too. I can see the bond between you and your wife. A long marriage and raising kids together is the greatest gift and experience in the world. Peace.
Thanks Joe! We’re having our 20 year anniversary this week. She’s the magic behind the household.
@@MasconLeather I'm sure she is!😀 She keeps you and your sons on track. She is quite the artist herself. Congrats on the 20 years. Thank you again for everything you share. You are a true inspiration.

That was an amazing insight into your life. Thank you for sharing!!! So inspirational.
Thanks for the kind words!
So inspiring. Man you guys are amazing people!!!!!!! I love it! Absolutely love it. I'm a truck driver trying to find a way out anything to get out of trucking. But I'm struggling because I don't know enough to not be entry level somewhere else ... But your videos so inspiring. I have a young family and my dream is to work from home and have a small family business and live comfortably, just comfortably is all I want and my family to be involved and you sir, such an inspiration. I hope one day I can get out of this life into a creative one like you're showing me with these videos. Thank you.
Perfect!!! One step at a time. 👍👍
This was great! The thing that really grabbed me on YT, was a video so full of interest for the eye and not a word spoken! Viewing and learning, keeping you locked in and no talking! I watch them over and over and still find things I've missed. Great concept! You've since added audio and they're as good or better! And you're willingness to share the craft and show how you do it is rare today! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for that, and for taking the time to comment!
I appreciate it!
Love that! Great family, too. Thanks for sharing!

Awe!!! Thanks !!
I always wanted to see my teacher Mr Shell but somehow managed to miss this video. So happy to finally see it. The first video I watched was the Walden satchel and fell in love with Mr Shell’s work immediately. I wish I could afford one 😅. Lots of respect and regards from Pakistan. Keep up the good work…
Thanks!!!
Awesome video. Your content has always inspired me to continue with the craft and not worry about the “right” way to make with leather. Really cool to see the whole shebang. Good stuff!
I’m glad I can help! Thanks for watching!
Just awesome! Very inspirational, Artie!! I only wish it were longer. You are a very blessed man. Thank you for helping to inspire me to craft and to improve everyday:-)

Thanks !
Love your style. Artistic and functional, both. Great photos. May need to take a field trip down to your area.
Thanks, Kevin!
Very cool! I was a band director for 15 years, and decided to quit to build fishing rods and duck calls, and now I am dabbling with leather as well. 6 years later I’m still finding my way. I found this video very uplifting!
Love your work!
Perfect!!!! Thanks for watching, Brian!
Hi Artie, Fantastic! So good to finally meet the man and his family behind the videos and actually see your face. I think it helps people realize that there's an actual person behind the hands that has sacrificed and worked bloody hard to get his brand where it is. I applaud you and your families efforts.
Looking forward to more videos

Wonderful video. YOUR work is one of the things that inspired me to work on leather. One of my designs was inspired by one of your wallets. Now I just have to tackle the branding and the pictures. I hope you have years and years of success sir. You deserve it, and all the blessings you've received.
Thanks for that!!
Awesome video! I'm 4 months late since you posted this but i just wanted to say thank you for your videos. As a newbie to the craft at 50 years old you are an inspiration. Leather craft for me is a small escape to the crafting world. Stay healthy, happy and most importantly,,, safe. Much love from Canada!
Never too late! The good thing about CZcams videos….. they’re “evergreen”. Their assistance is there forever to fall back on (as long as CZcams stays in business. 😆)
Good stuff my man thanks for opening up and sharing. Love your work .
You’re welcome!!
Congratulations! Wow - it is nice to finally get to know you and your family a bit better. As I often say here - your videos are by far the most well done, informative AND enjoyable to watch. You’ve inspired me - now get back to work 😉

I got into leather work while in Japan and started watching your videos. Didn’t realize you are in Williamsburg, as I just moved back to Hampton roads. I like your style!
Perfect! Thanks for watching!
Your video is a good reminder for me to not take 20 years to make that sort of jump as well. Really inspiring to see the behind the scenes. Also wanted to let you know your tutorial video on using bump jigs are genius. Hope you keep making more content like that.

Very happy to see you and your family. You told me about this video may be six month before. I thought you are much younger....hahaha...
You story is really inspiring. One day I will knock your door.
Regards from Canada.
Thanks ! Yeah... I’m old.
Ty for sharing. Always an inspiration. You as well as your family!
Guess you kinda are the Michael Jordan of leather.
I appreciate that. I wish I was that good.
Artie: Your videos are still some of the most engaging, entertaining videos on CZcams. They match the quality of the leather products (and ideas) that you make. Thank you for sharing. Making leather products for a living is work enough. Add onto that, the video 'filming' and editing on top of that. Wow. If you think you are blessed, consider us viewers being blessed also.
I really appreciate that!!! Thanks!!
I would also like to thank you for your videos . I've enjoyed every every time to watch and learn
Thanks!!
You are a real life Wizard of Oz!! Showing us to use our brain, courage and with help overcome fear. Glad CZcams is the tornado that brings you and your family to all of our homes. Best wishes 🙏
😆 love that analogy!
I really enjoyed watching your story. And of course I enjoy your videos too. CZcams is the only social media I do, but if I ever make an Instagram account, I'll look you up there too
I think so many of us share this same story.
10 years into leather work and I'm ready to burn the office chair and do my thing. It's the only thing I can honestly see me doing that I'll never tire of.
Scary as hell, though.
Congrats on your success.
I agree
@@MasconLeather did you already have everything in order before you threw down the 2-week notice? Website, CZcams, social media presence, etc?
I spent years and years planning prior to quitting the credit union. It felt like a prison escape...
You are and inspiration to all of us who are afraid to make the leap.....
Thanks, William!
I'm in awe at the artistic talent running in the family. I hope your sons get as good as you did in their respective crafts, or even surpass you!
Thanks for that!!
It is awesome to see your story. It gives me inspiration to keep moving forward on my small bussiness. I love your videos and work. You are a true person to look up too and strive to be like in many ways thank you
