The spirit is the breath of life that God breathed into Adam nostrils, and he became a living soul. The breath returns to God, that's not the soul.

You didn’t mention the soul
You said that the body returns to dust and the spirit returns to God but what happens to the ones who lived a Godless life or didn't believe in God?
Well I would say that’s God’s knowledge not mine. Heaven is being with God forever, so for an atheists that might be horrible
What happens to the soul
So the Spirit returns to God in Heaven? Then at the rapture, he will either send you through the gates of Heaven or say depart from me I know you not?

Jesus as our example was sleeping during is 3 days in the tomb.
Jesus said: For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man
be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matthew 12:40 NKJV
And he said unto them, Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer, and that he should rise from the dead on the third day...Luke 24:46
Jesus said, no one has ascended to heaven ...
Understanding Jesus words, it help us to understand Paul meaning.
Jesus said to Nicodemus: ? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. Verily, verily,
I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not,
how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things. John 3: 11-13
Jesus said to Mary: Touch me not; for I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go find my brothers,
and tell them that I ascend to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. John 20:17
I believe Christ was being very clear in this passage where he was going after death on the cross. As we shouls go too.
Who possesses immortality, God alone possesses immortality, who dwells in an inaccessible light,
which no man has seen or can see, to whom belong honor and eternal power. Amen! 1 Timothy 6:16
Jesus said. My Father's will is that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him will have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6: 39,40,44,54.
Paul support Jesus and said But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep in the Lord, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 1 Thessalonians 4:13,14
For if the dead are not raised, neither is Christ raised, and therefore also those who are dead in Christ are lost. 1 Corinthians 5:16-18
We waiting the second coming of Christ to receive eternal life not before, according to the Holy Spirit. The devil's deadliest deception is to deceive us
with his false words by mixing error with the truth by His interpretation of the Bible, as He did today, so many christians are ignorance of what Jesus said.
