I had the pleasure and misery of owning a 2005 convertible. I drove it from Portland, OR to Madison, WI in 2 snowy and rainy days. The car handled great, sounded great until I later went to Florida. Once in The Sunshine State, the gear shifter bezel was almost as hot as the exhaust and the interior wasn’t much cooler - even with the air conditioner running full blast.
That being said - almost 20 years later - I would still recommend that EVERY car enthusiast at least rent a Viper for the weekend. No video can give that car or the team of Dr. Frankensteins who created it the appreciation it truly deserves.

Imagine what the Viper could've been if Dodge showed it even an ounce of the dedication and care that GM gave to the Corvette and Camaro Z-models.
Dodge consistently produced a car that was raw, unsafe, more expensive, less refined, and less technologically equipped than the Corvette for a significantly higher price. Looking at the interior and electronics of the Viper, it never evolved beyond 1990s kit-car interior quality and electronics -- which is utterly wild, given the incredible success Oreca and Zakspeed saw in the late 90s/early 2000s in professional motorsport.
There is absolutely zero excuse for Dodge (and Ford, with the Ford GT) to have not been able to deliver a sportscar that competed with the Corvette for the same sticker price as a Corvette.
There is absolutely zero excuse for Dodge and Ford to not have produced Corvette-price competitive sportscars in the Ford GT and the Viper.
I love how the 5th gen Viper perfectly combined the best design elements of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gen Viper into a single design. If I win the lottery, the 5th gen Viper (in ACR trim, of course) is near the top of my list (right alongside the 4th gen ACR).

As Harry Ricardo put it in his 1923 book on the matter, an engine becomes "high speed" when the dynamic forces on the components becomes the dominant design consideration and when effective heat transfer becomes a necessity too as the cycle rate increases. That's as opposed to simply withstanding pressure and temperature, or being the correct shape and size and strong enough to hold itself up etc.
High speed engines are light and stiff, then, rather than stout and sturdy. On the third honk, we floored it and I remember kind of ducking down because of this sudden horrendous noise. It sounded like the Viper had blown its engine. We had gotten to well over 100 Mph when we began slowing down. My friend and I were both looking behind us for the smoking remnants of that V10 engine, but we couldn't see any. Finally we saw the Viper slowing down about 25 car-lengths in front of us. We chatted with the guy a bit. He said that they race this particular car and, at sea level and on race gas, it's a tad over 1000HP.

I bought this car a month ago and I could not be happier. Interestingly, this particular Viper is extra special. Not only is it one of 100 VOI.9 examples, it also has the super rare Mopar Performance Option that added Belanger headers (as Tedward noted), full high-performance exhaust, a much hotter camshaft ("lope noted by Ted), an aggressive ECO tune, along with other modifications. There were 9 such cars built and output is estimated ~650-675hp (vs 510 in a "normal 2006 Viper). I plan to dyno it in the spring. Arrow/Prefix worked with Dodge to juice a few of the last Gen 3's to keep the excitement up before (600hp) Gen 4s made their debut 18 months later. There were no 2007 Vipers so this is why Dodge gave the unusual OK to add a factory-endorsed performance option (vs a cosmetic/paint only variant). This car is a beast and I feel very lucky and happy to be its next owner!

Thanks for the video, great job. My dream Viper is a 97 GTS R.
A friend has a 92 Viper that looks like it rolled off the line yesterday. Have been in it a couple of times and I absolutely love how the car feels when it is driven hard. It honestly feels like it has more horsepower than 400.

I was going to watch just the first 1-2 mins of this video but ended up watching the whole thing. It sounds so intoxicating in a way no other "exotic" cars do and everything about it is just so cool. Quite possibly the most special car ever.

I wasn’t going to watch it at all, as it’s not my cup of tea, but it’s awesome!

That's one thing I love about my Jeep GC SRT, the bonnet vents and the heat coming out of them. Always wanted a car with bonnet vents :D

The viper version included a low-profile cross-ram intake with dual throttle bodies, the manifolds, oil pan, heads, and accessory drive; the compression ratio was raised, the pistons lightened, the maximum engine speed increased, the valves enlarged, the rods and crank strengthened. In the end, few components were shared with the truck engine.
    I miss my rt10

Wow! Thanks for the hot ride!
See a few at the Mecum Auto Auction. They pull in a pretty penny. I remember Rosanne Barr exiting the Viper when they first hit the market! Boy, does time fly :))

When Gwen Stefani sang, “this shit is bananas,” it was because she just got out of this car

ah yes, I had a red Viper electric toy car as a kid...still love the looks to this day. Funny what nostalgia can do to your view of something. The name Viper will always be treasured

You nailed it, this is what the viper was for, aggression and customization of huge power. 👌

Amazing, sounds incredible! Would love a picture-in-picture view of the pedal box for those heel-toe down shifts :) Keep it up!
