      It's unfair to think that a woman's voice will stay the same throughout her lifetime...I could tell a man would say that....Aretha career was so long of course she would have changes but her gift was the fact that she navigated those change brilliantly...also she wrote that she learned how to use her voice so she stopped over singing...women got thru biological changes that can also affect their voices...but to be clear I am not negating how bad smoking is for the voice I'm just say that it's not always the sole cause of changes

Its like patti has full chest voice up to bb5 ( this second sustained Bb5 was... omg ). Aretha has much much better tone, but patti's power completely destroys Aretha especially in upper belts thats why Adam also picked Patti in all upper belts except for like one G5 and the B5 note. Patti is the only one who can be compared with Whitney in terms of power. They are equally powerful but Whitney couldnt reach that high. Patti's ability to maintain this power in a5 and after is magnificent. Whitney was more powerful in low and mid belts tho and in SOME upper belts and more resonant at most of these notes

    Aretha really damaged the clarity of her voice by smoking. Patti Labelle always had more sustaining power than Aretha. But Aretha had a better appoggio technique than Patti. That's why Aretha's notes are clear, fast even vibrato, and she can sing phrases and runs at the very top of her range (Ain't No Way, Skylark, Respect). Most of Patti's notes are sustained on an open "waaaah" sound, similar to Chaka Khan. This makes it easier for them to sustain powerful notes, but they have more difficulty phrasing and doing melismas up there compared to Aretha.

    • @KajiVocals
      @KajiVocals Před 2 lety +5

      This is not really true. Aretha did not attempt the high belts in songs you mentioned live often... in fact I've yet to see any clips of her actually attempting the climax of Ain't No Way live. And she never really had a better breath support technique than Patti. Notice how airy her voice was in the middle of her range even in the 1960s. Great singer but not 'appoggio'. Patti was classically-trained and when you really listen to her voice in detail it is very audible.

      I heard him reference clarity of the belts several times. And my point is as an older more mature singer your voice won't be clear like a younger singer"s voice. Most of those clips Patti was in her lat 40s and 50s. Comparing her to a 20 something Aretha is somewhat unfair. I've seen clips of young Patti hitting crystal clear notes with no sign of strain. Her voice really soared. But these are two totally different instruments. And I absolutely love them both. Along with their industry God- daughters are vocal masterclass examples.

      @@mspiesundee7202 , I don`t think it was a fair comparison because Patti and Aretha`s vocal styles are too different.... Patti loves to hold notes for days so a better comparison would have been Patti and Melba Moore or even Dionne Warwick, they both used to hold long notes back in the day... Also it would not be fair to compare Aretha`s vocal clarity to Patti`s during the years smoking was affecting her vocal clarity especially since Patti was not a smoker and her clarity lasted. Personally I think Patti improved vocally after age 40.

She could distort, brighten, strengthen, twang, whatever with her voice. It's also kinda like the argument between Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson. If you like a more powerful, dramatic, steely, voice then you'll like Ms. Labelle better. But if you prefer a more agile, versatile, dare I say coloratura voice then you'll prefer Ms. Franklin. I would have put different clips of Aretha. The clips for Aretha are usually shorter than Patti. It's like showing a clip of 3 seconds before Aretha's peak note, and choosing songs that are not showing her flexing hard. Then, 7 seconds of Patti in her peak note. I love Patti, too. I love the clips they picked of her. I am in awe of Patti's powerful, beautiful voice. Both artists are the GOAT in my book.

      I wouldn't say more 'soulful' but more smooth. Patti has a very punchy, bright, piercing timbre that isn't for everyone (I prefer it myself). Aretha is lighter, smoother and more balanced in tone.

    Patti has more volume output, but it’s Aretha for me. Aretha knows how to adjust better as she goes higher, plus her tone is much more sweet/clear to me. It’s more of a preference, since both of these legends are titans that hold their own.

    • @KajiVocals
      @KajiVocals Před 3 lety +2

      I'd actually disagree. When researching for my Patti vid (it's on my channel - almost 90 minutes of vocal insanity) I came to realisation that she actually has quite perfect control when she wants to. She often goes for grit though. But she has perfectly clean notes and sustains even up to C#6 (with vibrato). Aretha was more mixy but also more of a gritty singer (talking about her most 'famous' era that is). Aretha used to have a more Patti-like high range in her earlier years back when she sang in more of 'traditional pop' field.

    • @Ryan_K535
      @Ryan_K535 Před 3 lety +5

      @@KajiVocals That’s what I meant. When I said “adjust”, I meant that Aretha was much more mixy as going higher, while Patti just goes for that gritty strong sound.

      @@KajiVocals Now that’s a mix. That’s what Aretha usually switched to usually G5 and higher. Mixing can also improve tonality, because going full on as you go higher might come as a little aggressive. I never said Patti couldn’t, but most of the time she just chose to be a little aggressive and gritty, which can be a little too much for me.
      P.S- The fact that she is mixing early 6th octave is insane. Now that’s longevity

    If they intended to do a comparison between singers who can hold notes the longest , they should have compared singers who are known for holding notes like Patti Labelle and somebody like Melba Moore or Shirley Bassey or Barbara Streisand.... Dionne Warwick was another that liked to hold long notes.
    Since this is Aretha and Patti Labelle and they have two different vocal styles, I really like and prefer Aretha`s tone much better .
    Aretha has vocal beauty while Patti Labelle holds notes for days and days , that`s her style and it would be a better comparison if another singer with a more similar style was used as a comparison.
    Patti Labelle vs. Melba Moore or Patti Labelle vs. Dionne Warwick .

    To do a proper comparison, you would have to use the same song, and the same era. Aretha is a power house, Patti is too, but Patti is more operatic with a nasal twang. In Aretha's early days her voice was clearer because she sang in a lower tone. Patti's voice always sat highier, as evident in her speaking voice. Also, age has something to do with it.
