The great Chris Haueter once said
"To gi or not to gi? Is a stupid question! its like asking should I do this sex or that sex? You do both!"

It was more along the lines of...If you're focusing on one style, will training in the other style be beneficial? But yeah ideally learn both, at least starting off.

Sweater and shirt chokes are the same. You bunch up the material and use it for collar chokes

Weapons aren’t equalizers, they’re force multipliers.

Im curious: How does the attacker wearing a coat matter? If someone only trains no gi, wouldn't they just as easily dismantle an un trained attacker no matter what he is wearing? On the flip side, if someone only trains Gi and has to defend against someone in a t-shirt and try to grip, it's going to be an issue. Just my opinion, of course.

I think training in the style you may not compete in CAN benefit you if you are focusing on the principle behind the techniques because all fighting really just comes down to physics and biology . So if there's say a choke you can do using the gi, how can you translate that same choke into your no gi game? Sorry I can't give specifics , my grappling knowledge is pretty basic but this reminds me of training empty hands vs weapons . I may be doing something with a stick or knife that gets me thinking "ok , now do that with just your hands "

For sure.... There are plenty of ways to make what you are doing translate. It's a matter of training with a purpose of you want crossover. I don't think it will be as natural a transition if you don't really pay attention to how it applies in various scenarios

Your Jiu Jitsu should be good jiu jitsu no matter what clothes you are wearing.

I agree... that's why I am always cool, Gi or No....but if you are concentrating on one in particular...will training the other actually help?

@@OpenMatChronicles It really does depend on your focus right? One could argue that if you improve your control in no-gi as far as positional control and submission control then you gi performance in that area would also improve because of the additional gripping. Conversely you could also argue that if you have improved and really great defense and escapes in the gi your defense and escapes in no-gi would be even better do to the lack of gripping. But again, just improve your bjj in general and it all gets better. :)
