Pouring a custom concrete hearth (I should not have tried flipping it alone...)

  • This wasn't my first time doing a precast, upside down concrete pour but it was the first time I used the textured edge. I'm a big fan of pre-casting upside down because the top ends up being perfectly smooth. Everything went really smoothly on this portion of the project. The clients were happy - I'm happy.
I used rapidset concrete mix and black concrete dye. There were a couple places where the dye mix was a little off and didn't blend well from one bucket to another but for the most part it was really even. Tara did a great job mixing
    Enjoy
Feel free to leave tips for next time

Great. Thanks for not adding music except for the very end. I think I'm going to try this.

How do you make sure the rebar doesn’t sink all the way to the bottom so it shows on the top of the slab? Looks like you just laid it in there. Thanks!

By waiting to put it in I made sure that it didn’t sink to the bottom. The concrete was setting up enough to hold it plus there was enough aggregate in the mix to keep it up.

Awesome work, turned out great! Anyway you could link to the mold and dye? Thanks!

would this be strong enough to use as a hearth under a 350 lb wood stove? Just dont want it cracking under the weight

The concrete would be strong enough if properly reinforced. The frame supporting it would need to be well built as well but I believe this mix is 5000 psi at full cure (not 100% sure on the number without looking). For perspective, footer mix for a house foundation only needs to be 2500psi. Obviously that’s at 4” thick and this is 2” but it would work.

That rebat was way oversized for the thickness of the slab. I also would never put blocks into my mould and risk scratching the mould.

What blocks? I think the 2x4s were just holding the bar off the form.

@@DullenCustoms yeah. I always look at each sheet of melamine I buy. I have had a micro scratch I didn't see ruin a 1000 dollar countertop. I like the cream look so try never to grind. Just acid wash and seal.

This is great! Thank you for sharing your project. I'm looking to make something very similar. At around 5:18 you appear to spray the area with what I think is some sort of non-stick element. Would you mind linking that as well? Thanks again!

On this project I actually used wd-40 but I’ve also used cooking spray. You can also get mold release off Amazon too

@Dullen Customs thank you again, really appreciate the response.

Thanks for the video. Did you use any type of sealer afterward? Thank you!

Yes I did. It’s several coats of a matte finish sealer.
