Butterfly Swimming Technique. Timing. How to swim butterfly

  • The best way to understand the timing in butterfly is in two phases.
    The first phase is the pull of the arms and the second is the recovery.
    1st phase:
    The first phase starts when the arms start to pull. After the first movement of the hands, the head starts to lift up and you start to bend your knees a little bit. After the arms pass the shoulder line then you extend your bent knees quickly and finish the pull. Your body should be extended like a ski jumper but with your ankles flexed the other way.
    2nd phase:
    The second phase starts with your arms going out of the water. Your head starts to come down. As your arms pass the shoulder’s line, your knees slightly bend again. Your head enters first and then your arms. As your arms are entering you should extend the knees with a strong kick. With the momentum of that second kick, the arms glide, the head stays down, the chest sinks and the hips go up. Now the first phase starts again.
    How much you glide will be determined by your goal. If you want to swim as fast as you can then don’t glide a lot, as soon as the movement ends start the cycle again. However, if you want to save more energy, it is better to carry the speed of the glide for a little longer. Just make sure your body is stretch out, from your fingers to your shoulder and from your knees to your toes.
    When you swim you won’t have time to think of all of this. It is best to find out where your weakness is and then you can start to work on it one thing at a time. As your technique gets better you’ll be able to practice more and more and feel the water better. Then, your body will naturally find ways to go faster.

    I've been trying to find this timing part of the butterfly for a month. I asked everyone I could and watched every video I found but this is the only one where I exactly got what I needed. Thanks a ton brother! Now I won't have to clown my way trying to figure this out on my own. 😅 much much grateful😊😊😊

  • @xuchenglin6256
    @xuchenglin6256 Před 3 lety +11

    Exactly the information I need! The timing is what I struggled the most, I watched almost all the butterfly videos, but the timing is rarely mentioned... Maybe that's not a problem for many other people. I used to swam breaststroke a lot (learned when I was a kid, swam for years before I switch to freestyle as an adult), so I find myself always tend to swim the butterfly the breaststroke way (they are similar! and if you still call it butterfly), that is the legs stay still when pull, during recovery comes the first kick, then comes second kick when gliding, then start next pull... just like the breaststroke timing but with an additional kick! It's weird but it works... and it's the most "natural" way for me... Though I know it's not the right way, but when I try to do it right, I found the tricky thing is I cannot find the information about what's the correct timing. It's more than "one when you finish pull, one when your hands enter water" -- when to bend knee, bend how much, when to kick, it's a quick kick or slow solid kick... That all makes people confused... And additionally, I found to build the timing, the single arm butterfly drill works very well, it's strange but when swam freestyle-like single arm, it's much more easier to coordinate the kick the same time with the pull, perhaps because in this way only the timing is different, you only focus on one thing and it makes it easier. Thanks for making this video, gotta "time" my stroke more the next time in the pool.

    Excellent video and break down of the butterfly stroke. This is by far the most detailed explanation of the critical timing to perfect the entire stroke. I watchesd this and gave it a try in the pool in 2 seprate exersices. Pull and finish off on ski jump. This part is crucial since it's thr biggest mistake that every beginner does. The breathing timing with the arms at the right place.

    1
    00:00:02,922 --> 00:00:07,491
    접영 때맞춤(timing)
    2
    00:00:11,606 --> 00:00:16,188
    접영 때맞춤(timing)은 두 단계로 나누어 이해하는 것이 가장 좋습니다.
    3
    00:00:16,719 --> 00:00:19,619
    1단계는 팔 당기기(pull)이고
    4
    00:00:19,862 --> 00:00:21,815
    2단계는 팔 되돌리기(recovery)입니다.
    5
    00:00:21,885 --> 00:00:25,077
    팔로 당기기 시작하면서 1단계가 시작됩니다.
    6
    00:00:25,171 --> 00:00:32,744
    두 손의 첫 움직임 후, 머리가 들리기 시작하고 무릎을 약간 구부리기 시작합니다.
    7
    00:00:34,017 --> 00:00:41,617
    두 팔이 어깨선을 지난 다음, 구부러진 무릎을 재빨리 펴면서 팔 당기기를 끝냅니다.
    8
    00:00:41,951 --> 00:00:47,950
    여러분의 몸은 마치 스키 점프 선수처럼 쭉 뻗어 있어야 합니다, 하지만 발목은 반대(발바닥)쪽으로 굽히고.
    9
    00:00:50,268 --> 00:00:54,191
    두 팔이 물 밖으로 나가면서 2단계가 시작합니다.
    10
    00:00:54,644 --> 00:00:57,016
    머리가 내려가기 시작합니다.
    11
    00:00:57,123 --> 00:01:02,750
    두 팔이 어깨선을 지나면서, 무릎을 다시 약간 굽힙니다.
    12
    00:01:03,666 --> 00:01:06,804
    머리가 먼저 입수하고 그다음에 두 팔이 입수합니다.
    13
    00:01:07,494 --> 00:01:12,494
    두 팔이 입수할 때 강하게 차면서 무릎을 뻗어야 합니다.
    14
    00:01:12,994 --> 00:01:22,537
    이 두 번째 차기의 타력과 함께, 두 팔이 활강하고, 머리는 깊이를 그대로 유지하고, 가슴은 가라앉고 엉덩이는 들립니다.
    15
    00:01:24,101 --> 00:01:26,744
    이제 1단계가 다시 시작합니다.
    16
    00:01:27,467 --> 00:01:30,623
    얼마나 길게 활강(glide)하느냐는 여러분의 목적에 따라 정해집니다.
    17
    00:01:31,006 --> 00:01:34,642
    최대한 빠르게 헤엄치고 싶다면 길게 활강(glide)하지 마십시요,
    18
    00:01:35,468 --> 00:01:38,882
    움직임이 끝나자마자 팔 젓기 주기(cycle)를 다시 시작하십시요.
    19
    00:01:41,877 --> 00:01:48,953
    그렇지만, 에너지를 절약하고 싶다면, 활강(glide)하는 속도를 조금 더 길게 가져가는 것이 좋습니다.
    20
    00:01:49,460 --> 00:01:56,795
    단지 확실하게 당신의 몸을 쭉 펴십시요, 손가락부터 어깨까지 그리고 무릎부터 발가락까지.
    21
    00:01:57,603 --> 00:02:01,538
    여러분이 헤엄칠 때는 이 모든 것들을 생각할 시간은 없을 것입니다.
    22
    00:02:01,659 --> 00:02:08,136
    한 번에 하나씩, 당신의 약점이 어느 부분에 있는지 찾아내고 그것을 강화해나가는 것이, 가장 좋습니다.
    23
    00:02:08,460 --> 00:02:14,093
    여러분의 기술이 나아져 감에 따라, 점점 더 많이 연습할 수 있게 될 것이며, 물을 더 잘 느끼게 될 것입니다.
    24
    00:02:14,852 --> 00:02:18,900
    그런 다음, 당신의 몸은 빠르게 헤엄치는 방법을 자연스럽게 찾게 될 것입니다.
    25
    00:02:26,504 --> 00:02:28,909
    시청해주셔서 감사합니다!
    빠르게 헤엄치세요!

      Yes, and they have been tremendously helpful. How? Because they focus on the challenging points and are not too loaded with disparate information. Nothing beats practice, but your vids are helping in targeting that practice for me. Keep them coming. They get better every time!
      I would add one thing for butterfly kick that worked for me is the drill with putting a kick every second underwater and trying to get down to like .80 or so. Because without that there is no way to swim butterfly with those 2 damn kicks.

    I do 3 kicks per arm cycle, is that ok? I just swim for fun and I don't pretend to go to any competition, adding one kick during the gliding allow me to be nearer to the surface of the water and it makes easier the jump of the body over the water. Also it is funny because only training dolphin kicks in all sessions for months when I have tried Butterfly I am as fast or a bit faster than Freestyle, which I find weird because I consider my Freestyle is good and it is my main training.

      Yeah, I thought, watched and found ans on that once when I was learning butterfly.. when you come up, like a dolphin you have to jump little bit. So automatically you come up, hands also out of water, perfect posture. After going inside the water, press your chest as showed in this video. So here, legs come out of water just for a second. ( As if our legs, are our tail) observe how dolphin jumps and how fluently ,gracefully it itself as well as it's tail goes down. We have to do similarly

    • @radhikapotdar3603
      @radhikapotdar3603 Před 5 lety +1

      We do have to glide zigzag but in the same line. ~~~~~ this way. So we will never sink inside as we arent swimming downwards but straight. May be for this case, keep your head down, hands straight touching ears. Go ahead !

      And is it better to use long fins to. Train butterfly? I can train freestyle much2 faster by using long fins and centrel snorkel by the way.

      @@bobjkr9870 use normal swim fins, and try single-arm butterfly, breath to the side (basically single arm freestyle with 2 butterfly kicks, 1 kick syncronized with the pull, the other one after the recovery, just like butterfly) . you'll find the "ejected" feeling much more easier, perhaps it's because in this mode you only have to focus one new thing -- the timing, everything else is the same with the freestyle, I find it a magical drill, hope this helps!
