    I just have to say that I love what Mike has been bringing to the dice tower. His solo reviews are both honest and concise and are just what I'm looking for when deciding if the solo variant of a game would make it's purchase worthwhile. Thanks!

    Great review Mike. Your sentiments are exactly why I held off buying Gloomhaven for solo play and why I have now ordered Jaws of the Lion. Can't wait to get my copy! cheers

    What are some of the games that you would rate a 9.5 or 10 for solo gaming?

    Nice job Mike. This is the first solo review I’ve seen of yours, and I’m looking forward to watching what others you have, as well as any new ones. I’m a big fan of gloomhaven, and got this on Fathers Day. It’s been awesome playing it with my 9 yr old daughter, along with my wife jumping in on scenario 2. It so expertly teaches it’s concepts, and my daughter is loving it.

      I'm with you, I've had the original for a long time... Unboxed and organized it in a Broken Token but had a hard time getting motivated to play! I'm hoping this version makes it easier to get into!

      Didn't purchase due to Gloomhavens overwhelming size and set up time. I was fortunate enough to have played its a few time and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately my freind sold his copy because of all the already mentioned problems. When I saw Jaws of the Lion and how it had been streamlined to tackle all of the issues of the original, I quickly preorded my copy.

  • @edouardbertrand6666

    Another strong point of JOTL lies in its four new characters. They each have a discernable clearcut personality, more so I believe than the starting characters of GHV. They are more accessible, easier to figure out, relate more often with magic and are frankly more fun to play. The Voidwarden in particular is just incredible.

  • @AFatalPapercut
    @AFatalPapercut Před 4 lety +4

    Had original GH for a while now but only got a few scenarios in, namely due to the set up time even with a go7 insert. I must say though JotL has got me wanting to dive right back into GH proper when I'm done with JotL

  • @Kentchangar
    @Kentchangar Před 4 lety +7

    Totally agree on the set up. I was fine with it in the beginning, but by the end it was frustrating. This looks like an extreme improvement on that part. I just hope the characters work well for my group.

    As a solo gamer, I feel the same about Mage Knight. I want to love the game since it's a popular solo game on many peoples' list but in the end, the set up is just too much for me. These days the amount of time to set up the game is one of the determining factors on whether I'd purchase the game or not. Happy to see I'm not the only concerned with the set up times. This new Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion seems to have a much simpler set up and am quite interested in it. Thank you for this review.

    • @herzbr
      @herzbr Před 3 lety

      To be honest is just a matter of being organized, I have everything organized on the box so I can set up a game in less than 10 min in gloomhaven and 5 min in mage knight

    • @tigerpjm
      @tigerpjm Před 2 lety +2

      Not to take away from your or Mike's concern regarding Gloomhaven set-up, because it is a valid consideration.
      But it can be mitigated hugely by buying an insert from the likes of Laserox or Folded Space or the other company that shall not be named.
      It decreases your set-up time massively, although it can significantly increase the price. Then there is the construction time of the inserts, punch out of all the pieces and sorting, which is several hours worth. But if you're happy to do that you can knock down setup and pack up times to around 10-20 minutes.
      Or you could just buy it on PC.
      Hope you enjoy Jaws!

    I wish some of these "solo" games where you actually play 2 characters would just make a character that was valued as 2. Doing book keeping for just one character would make these games excellent solo games.

    • @Caidezes
      @Caidezes Před 3 lety +2

      It always seemed odd to me that many board games' solo mode requires the player to control at least two characters. Kind of a misnomer since you're basically acting like two players.

    • @ripcordian
      @ripcordian Před 3 lety +1

      A lot of games, such as this, has it's main attraction in combos, figuring out optimal moves. Remove the synergy of two characters + monsters and there really isn't much of a game there. However I do agree that there should be more games that has it's strong point in some other mechanic that lend itself to another type of true solo experience

    • @Will.C.
      @Will.C. Před 3 lety +1

      @@ripcordian well for example make a "Ranger and Pet" team that's 1player/2characters, and one large hand of card. the alternative; controlling two boards, two different hands, ect,.. always seems like lazy design for single player.

  • @blkjet117
    @blkjet117 Před rokem

    I wanted to run a solo house rule by you. I want to play solo, but want the flavor of a 3 or 4 person mercenary party without the brain burn. Play one character (main) normally, but for the other party members shuffle their cards, and only turn over one at a time (like the monsters). When the main character must do a short rest, the other party members have their decks re-shuffled, and burn one card randomly reducing their deck like the main character. If the card burned is one that you want to retain, then randomly select a replacement burn card, and keep the original, reshuffling the deck again.

    Funnily enough, I'm avoiding jaws of the lion as it feels like it'd just have me yearning for more jaws of the lion like experiences, while the intention is just to try to funnel players into the bigger boxes.

    Really wanted to like Gloomhaven, hated (actually detested) the cards used as a timer mechanic, so sold the game after about 15 sessions. That said I’m tempted to get this and try house ruling to scrap what I hated (never thought about trying it with Gloomhaven)

  • @arcubal
    @arcubal Před 4 lety +6

    The Gloomhaven gushfest has to stop though (on ALL channels). Let's face it, at this point it's just nostalgia talking. There is nothing innovative or noteworthy about all the GH follow-ups, whether its Frosthaven or Jaws of the Lion. They're just a sequel/prequel with predictable gameplay, minor tweaks and more content. It's food for the masses, not a culinary masterpiece.

    • @TheRmm1976
      @TheRmm1976 Před 3 lety +6

      I agree with you to an extent, but the changes to this version (easier to learn and having the hex maps in a book format) are certainly worth talking about.
