Even without that, I do feel like he was the right choice, and the weaver saw potential in him.

If the fact that any animal-themed superhero/supervillain is a totem is still canon, then technically yes, but as Drake said, no writer EVER touched on it again. It was mentioned once and since then Spider-Totems have been the only totems ever made important. It's kinda a big plot hole too, becuase if Inheritors feed on all kinds of totems and are weak to most Spider-Totems die to their radiation... why haven't they tried to kill any other animal themed superhuman? It was just kinda a mess that's never been fixed, and I don't beleive it ever will tbh.

  • @Blasckk
    @Blasckk Před 2 lety +172

Straczynski's and Slott's retcons, while entertaining and cool stories, were quite antithetical to the grounded concept Spider-Man always had.
The problem is that they forced a rather inconsistent unnecessary mythology surrounding Spider-Man... A mythology that is constantly rewritten to the point that it lost any type of plausibility it may have had.
First, they invented that Peter was a chosen one by fate (Shiting a little on how grounded Spider-Man always was) and that there was a lot of Spider-Men out there before Peter forming a spider society; which were eaten by a totemic vampire named Morlun, that aparently was always there and for some reason never came to eat Peter alive, even though it was public knowledge that there had been a Spider-Man in New York for years.
Then they invented that the denied potential of Spider-Man's abilities allowed him to revive with a Power Up if he decided to accept it.
Then they invented that "Other" was not the arachnid skills that Peter refused to accept at first; but a kind of cosmic entity that revives spider-people randomly.
Then they invented a woman who was bitten by the same spider as Peter, who was also possessed by one of these cosmic entities; and apparently according to the exposition she was sooo very important (Although they never showed us that she was special in any way... The Bride had no different abilities compared to any Spider-Totem).
Then they invented that Morlun was not only an interdimensional being, but that he had a family too that was never mentioned before. which kidnapped the Master Weaver, another random totem; which was aparently extremely important to the point that Morlun almost shit his pants when he found that he died.
They also introduced the Web of life, which cutting a single thread apparently had the potential to erase entire universes.
They also introduced that the Inheritors are immortal because they clone each time they die to immediately return to the fight, making all of Peter's fights against Morlun a Plot Hole since Morlun should have immediately returned to continue fighting with Peter every time he "died".
Then they invented the Pattern Maker, something that apparently always existed and for some reason was not part of the ritual like the other four super-totems.
It also seems that the Inheritors now can't eat the Spider-Totems whose power comes from radiation (Stupid thing considering that all Spider-Men with the exception of the clones, Anya Corazón, both Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Man India and Spider-Man 1602 have powers originated from radiation.)
Then it seems that the fact that the Master Weaver dies apparently was not for much and has no major consequences.
The same for the Web of life, cutting a thread is catastrophic, but blowing the shit out of it does absolutely nothing.
As I said, they are entertaining stories... But not at all consistent or in tune (To not say antithetical) with the character and what represents.

I personally thought these aspects of Spider lore to be intriguing. It does give some sort of explanation why there will always be a Spider-Man in every universe.
I can get fed up with the usual status quo seen in other media and I thought those temporarily changes such as Superior Spider-Man and Parker Industries were pretty interesting.
I get that people want Peter to be poor and have a crappy life and undo the great moments in his life which admittedly selfish and a bit toxic nostalgia, but at least writers are trying NEW things with the character that can hopefully stick for a while before reversing to fit the widely perceived status quo that may be liked but ultimately stagnates Peter in a cynical cycle of misery.

Either that or just let him retire and have miles take over.

But yeah, the never-ending status quo is an intrinsically inherent problem for mainstream comic continuity. A reason as to why Mangas are more popular is because story-wise, it has a definitive beginning and end with character progression that sticks.

Honestly, I really dislike the Inheritors. They're too boring personality wise to really remember anything about them, and at the same time they feel like a bunch of mary sues. The way they make quick work of other Spider-People just feels really unearned, like how Solus kills Captain Universe.
To make it even worse, a lot of these Spiders that were killed this cruelly are characters that either existed for a long time and gotten people really attached to them (like Six Armed Spider-Man, which was such a bullcrap way to bring him back), or they were new characters that, much like Spider-Gwen, could've easily gotten at least a mini-series (Aaron Aikman from Edge of Spider-Verse #3 comes to mind, rest in peace).

    The AI-Verse.
Heres a tale of a normal highschool kid that got bit by a radioactive spider. He first went to the hospital for minor bites, and then kept getting worse. He was sent to the emergency room but doctors assumed it was an allergic reaction because he couldn’t tell if he was allergic to spider bites. He was pronounced fine and was sent home with a prescription. He woke up from a nightmare with neck pain and stiffness and checked himself into the hospital where they discovered that he had a massive necrosis and swollen lymph nodes. He was diagnosed with Q Fever, and given a transfusion. A few days later he woke up with a fever that wouldn’t go away and started to feel weak. He was rushed to the emergency room for severe dehydration. He couldn’t stand on his own, and had trouble breathing. He was diagnosed with Pneumonia and admitted to the ICU. By this point his lymph nodes in his neck had swollen so much that they were compressing his airway and blocking the airflow. He was given antibiotics but was unable to take them due to his immobility. He was given a tracheotomy and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit.
It was at this point that things began to get really bad. The results came back from the bone marrow transplant and it was positive for the Spider Baby Antibiotic Resistance Virus (SPARV). This means that his body became resistant to antibiotics used for his condition. Every day that goes by his body continues to fight against the antibiotics he was given, and he continues to lose his blood thinning abilities. He can no longer receive more transfusions. Once he hit the maximum level of Tissue Thinning, they told him he didn’t have much time left and needed a new liver and a kidney to survive. After an initial search, they were unable to find a match. They placed him on the national liver transplant list. They also told him that the potential donors’ bodies will begin to reject the donated organs.
He is severely malnourished and dehydrated. He has an extremely high infection count due to the combined effects of the surgeries, lack of fluids, bacteria, and fungus. There is no hope for a cure. He will die without a transplant. The only hope is to try a bone marrow transplant. However, because of his past history of rare blood disorders, he has a low likelihood of finding a match.
I have done a complete 180 in the space of a week. I was a recovering PTC skeptic, then I became really emotionally attached to this story. Then I saw that it has already raised $30,000 for his family. I felt the urgency to donate, so I have donated and I encourage everyone who reads this to donate as well.
