- A Top 10 List counting down the most surprising College Football teams of the 2021 season. These teams exceeded expectations during the season, surprising everyone. I judged these teams based off how low their offseason expectations were and how they performed this season. However, this was ultimately based off my opinion as I didn't have a specific ranking metric. The game shown for each team was not shown for any specific reason, I just picked one of that team's best wins of the season. Feel free to debate in the comments if you disagree with my list! Also, make sure to check out the honorable mentions in my pinned comment. Enjoy!

I told you to put South Carolina on this in a previous video, thanks.
Utah didn't surprise me, i wasn't surprised at all when they stomped Oregon
@@nvizl my bad meant to put them as an honorable mention

Solid list!!
I’d put Tennessee on there, with an extremely thin team they put together a solid season and had a top 5 offense in the country
I would also go for UTEP (They actually won 7 games for the first time in what feels like an eternity, although they did fall off in the 2nd half), North Texas and Old Dominion (largely for their 5 game win streaks after a 1-6 start that saved both of their seasons).
I think it’s because they still got blown out by Boise State and UTSA and lost their bowl game against Fresno State. That’s probably why no one noticed. Great season by the Miners though
Weren't they 6-1 at one point too?
As a Michigan fan, this season was an absolute rollercoaster and there was no way anyone thought we would beat Ohio state and make the playoffs
I believed 2021 had to be the year Michigan defeated Ohio State or I wouldn't have understood Harbaugh being back. I mean this all to respect as a Buckeye fan.
@@missingbuck GG you played a great game in the rose bowl Also thanks for beating the absolute sh*t out of MSU
@@markbaranyk9161 Yet you lost to that team😂😂😂
@@upbeatplays5264 a black eye yes, but at the end of the day we won the big ten championship so that’s a plus
@@upbeatplays5264 calling Michigan state the little brother is literally an understatement now lol y’all act just like one 😂trying your best to be relevant, Michigan won the Big Ten Championship get over it and congrats on your win, 35 more to go bro bro !!!👏🏾🤙🏾
Really surprised not to see NIU on this list. They went from 0-6 to 9-5 in just one season and won the MAC. UTEP is also missing from this list, going 7-5 after winning a total of 5 games the previous 4 seasons combined.
That's what I'm saying go huskies
Really liked seeing Arkansas have a decent season last year. Nice that their fans finally had something to cheer about after several years of despair.
God dang I miss college football
I miss football period.
H2P will always remember being there for the acc championship!
Can't believe UTSA is not on this list, I would put them at number 1 no doubt.
Good list though I'm not sure I'd put Cincy here. I remember hearing people talk in the pre-season about how stacked they were and how if any G5 team had a shot at the playoff it was them.
I think they were a little low on the list seeing how far they made it
Hell yeah I was pleasantly surprised by my Spartans this season, was honestly expecting a 6-6 season but I’ll take 11-2 and comeback win against the wolverines
As a Pitt fan I will never forgive y'all for the peach bowl
How was UTSA not number 1? Absolutely unbelievable season.
Should have been higher, but in defense of Michigan, they were unranked and ended up in the CFP. They absolutely blew out expectations
@@headintheclouds6935 Nah Michigan State was way more surprising.
@@upbeatplays5264 um what? Michigan was the first team ever to be unranked to start and make the cfp, .7% chance to win the big ten,0% chance to make the cfp like that’s amazing
@@michiganman43 Michigan was picked to finish 4th, but Michigan State was picked to finish dead last, and most had them missing a bowl. People had Michigan making a bowl with 7-8 wins. And they were close to the rankings preseason, unlike Michigan State. The Spartans were way more surprising.
My only disagreement with the teams themselves is Cincinnati. I felt they got a lot of preseason hype, and remember people saying they’d go to the playoffs if they beat Notre Dame.
Yea I know they had high expectations I just feel like the fact they actually ended up making the playoff was pretty surprising. I just never really expected a group of 5 team to finally get over the hump and make the playoff.
they got hype but who thought they were actually that good?
@@jimmygerman6478 They are a good team, showed all year that, offense all season had played phenomenal and defense stepped up. They got to Bama and that first half defense was keeping Cincy in it. Offense had an off day (which you can't afford to have against Bama or Georgia out of all teams currently), Because the offense couldn't get going, the defense struggled later in the game as they stayed out on the field for extended periods of time, when it was all said and done, Bama just had the better athletes to go make plays. This Cincy team has been forged to not need top elite talents out of HS, but to be a collective unit who play for each other and for one common goal. They deserved to be where they were.
Thank you for posting these videos…. Can’t wait for the CFB season this year
with Utah, I've really come to realize that when a linebacker has the first name Devin, you know he's gonna be good.
on another note...could you imagine this past year's Oklahoma State team with Chuba Hubbard?
Omg you just made me realize that. Oklahoma state would’ve killed their opponents
Sic em! Dave Aranda has put a helluva stout defense in that BU squad. 2021 was a fantastic year. Fall 2022 cant start soon enough.
All good picks! Definitely seen Oklahoma state stepped up! Im from Louisville Kentxxxx but I was proud to see Cincy make it to the cfp!
They actually hung with Bama. I thought it was gonna be a blowout but they fought hard. If their offense was better then they might’ve actually had a shot at the National Championship
I’m still bitter about the fiesta bowl
This was a fun year. It felt like a nice refresh button after seeing the same ole song and dance since like 2016
That fake slide is still one of the rawest things ive ever seen in my entire life
Such a fun year, so many up and coming teams
No Northern illinois? Went from 0-6 to 9-4 and winning the MAC
Coming From the Biggest Michigan fan. Nobody Thought MSU or UofM we’re gonna do anything they accomplish so much but beating OSU and winning the big ten title was needed and wasent expected
Go blue!〽️
Congrats on the win, coming from a huge Buckeyes fan, may the rivalry be renewed.
Northern Illinois has gotta be on this. Cincinnati could be bumped down. Making the playoff was a surprise but they were expected to be really good pre season and the top G5 team
Michigan maybe No. 1 on this list, but as a Buckeye fan I’m placing them No. 2 as the most surprising team (I mean this respectfully). For me, Utah is No. 1 only because of what this team went through in the 2021 season. The lost of 2 players in a 9 month span to gun violence (one self inflicted). The story of the 21’ Utes to me is just the most moving and important to just know. Tragedy motivated the team to just a season to remember, in winning the PAC-12 and heading to their first Rose Bowl Game ever.
Michigan set it off this past year! They gotta make cfp!
trust me as a weary and tired michigan fan they were the most surprising team this year.
I m glad you out Baylor, as a Southern Miss fan, or just someone who doesn’t pull for Ole Pis, it’s always nice to see them get beat tbh. I mean, no one in Mississippi who doesn’t pull for Ole Miss dislikes them and their salty fans. I mean they act like they’re supposed to go to the playoffs every season and still act surprised when they end up going 6-6 (Ik they did better than that this year, but it’s an example)
How is utsa not on the list there were the most surprising team in CFB this season
So proud of my Spartans last year. GO GREEN!!!
The thing about Wake Forest is that Kenneth Walker transferred from there to Michigan State. What could've been if Walker decided to stay at WF for another year
Would he have had the same results if he stayed? Probably not, he mentioned not clicking with that offense and wanting to be the featured back. Wake wasn’t about to change its offense and MSU leaned on him in some games.
Go Green
Go White!
Gus Johnson 📢🔥🔥🔥.
I know Cincinnati didn't have the greatest finish but dang, talk about a year for them. I mean how often you gonna get a team like Cincy a group of 5 team in the playoff. We may never see a season like that again which is why I have nothing but respect for that team. This year was crazy seeing all these teams like Wake Forest, Pitt and Utah emerge from the ashes.
2:10 Talk about invading a stadium!
Tuck Ain't Done
GO GREEN 💚
Go Deacs! Wake had a great season and we're ready to run it back.
It's nice to see that the KENTUCKY WILDCATS can get 10 wins, defeat Iowa (who lost to Michigan in the Big 10 Championship game) in the Citrus Bowl and the Cats are now at a level that this wasn't a surprise!
I think NIU could have made the list for sure, 0-6 last year, 9-5 Mac Champs this year.
To think as a Michigan fan I went into last season saying if we went 9-3 that would be a win to me with the amount of coaching changes and player turnover we had in the off-season. I was expecting to realistically go 8-4, but To then end up in Miami in January to watch my Wolverines play in the CFP was sooo surreal! Sure we got our ass's kicked in the Semi's but just being there was a Huge DUB!
Oklahoma might be a surprise team this year
No
Hell no
OU will be lucky to come in third place. Gotta get through OSU and BU first. Plus a whole reset with Riley leaving
Purdue should have been on the list they went 9-4 with big wins over ranked teams and they had one of the toughest schedules in the country.
UConn??
Yea honestly I probably should’ve included the fact they won 1 game is a miracle
@@pschighlights exactly
At least UTSA made the honorable mention list
Utah state
Wake and pitt for sure.
At the beginning of the season a lot of people was say 5-7 6-6 depending on how the Texas game went but they really could’ve and probably should’ve went 10-2 or 9-3, 11-2 or 10-3 including bowl game
I would have put the Minnesota Golden Gophers on this list. I was not expecting them to even sniff at the possibility of playing in the Big Ten Championship game.
How did UTSA not make the list?
I'm surprised Georgia isn't here because I understand they were expected to be a really good team but winning the natty for the first time in 41 years I mean doesn't that at least deserve an honorable mention
Yea good point, I added them. I didn't think about them as much since they had such high expectations in the preseason but seeing them finally end the streak and win the natty was definitely a surprise.
Still laughing at Michigan thinking they are playing at SEC level when they finally beat Ohio State and get blown out by UGA
Part 2 of suprise teams
At 2:57 the Wake Forest receiver definitely pushed the NC State defender down. That should have been called Offensive Pass Interference
Take away that touchdown and NC State wins the game
Oklahoma state wasn't a surprise since they are usually in top 25 or top 20 with their big brother OU.
As an Illinois fan I guarantee you that we will be in this list in a few.
Delusional
I’m gonna say Kansas. Not because of their record, but because everyone thought every game against them would be a squash match; but they put up a good fight; and they beat Texas in Austin lol
MSU isn’t number 1???
They were projected to get last in the big ten east. Michigan was at least projected to be decent and in the middle of the pack.
Michigan & Michigan State both had 2 wins last year but Michigan accomplished way more
They were both awful last year, and they both exceeded expectations this year, but Michigan just accomplished more
Sorry, did MSU make the playoffs? Or win the B1G? Or beat Ohio State?
@@stephenhunter8811 they didn’t do neither of those this year. The video said “2021 Season”
@@Elishanbowman The 2021 was this season lol
W
Oklahoma state ain’t done. We coming for that big 12 championship. Gopokes
Osu vs bu conna be a hell of a dog fight this fall. Cant wait for that game
Was incredibly proud of our 21’ Utah Utes. Extremely excited to what this next season has to offer. 🔴⚪️⚫️
At 8:09 Does that girl know that she is doing the Hook Em Horns hand sign for the Texas Longhorns?
Michigan State? They’re like always expected to be ranked tho lol?
Hope the Utes make the rose bowl again this year... And I also hope they crush whoever they play in their bowl game
I don’t know if anybody outside of cincinnati knew how good this team was. I was not surprised with the season. This was a team of 4/5 year starters
Cincinnati is not a surprise they almost be Georgia in the bowl last year
Pitt surprised me the most as much as I can’t stand them
Purdue should be in there we haven’t won 9 games since 2003
Why was cincy on here? Top 10 pre season have around 9 guys who will go pro this year 2-3 in the first round or 2. Favored in almost every game besides against bama
The year of the upset!
Felt like 2007 (a season I never saw), with the number of upsets and unexpected team risings.
@@missingbuck I have a photographic memory. Do you? Because I remember the 2007 college football season, one year before I was born.
@@missingbuck ❤️
@@noblesix7859 No, I actually learned about the 2007 season thanks to KTO's "The CRAZIEST college football season of all-time". I actually didn't start watching college football until 2015.
@@missingbuck Who was your favorite college football team of 2021? Mine was Texas A&M.
What about UTSA they went 12-2 first time in program history
Where is Purdue??
Why wasn't Ole Miss on the list? They went from 5-5 to 10-3
Michigan at 1 is hilarious considering their Orange Bowl.
did u expect them to even make it. NO, thats what I thought. If this were Alabama then yes you would have a point but this is not Alabama. Thats like saying next year if North Carolina beats they biggest rival and wins there conference and has an appearance in the cfp is that a disappointment, no not at all.
I really dk how I’m the world you don’t have Cincinnati as #1 tbh, that really makes no sense, especially to have Michigan at 1 and not Cincinnati. As a team that come from the weakest conference in the world and used to play my Golden Eagles (southern miss) every year, I was pulling for them all year this year and was hoping so badly they would win it all honestly. But it’s nice to see they’ve come so far from again, being in the absolute worst conference in the world (conference USA) to where they are now, it makes me jealous Southern amiss didn’t follow them, Houston, ECU, and I think Tulsa when they all left for the AAC. Like as a fan of the team that beat, and not just beat but basically dominated those teams for my entire life, it saddened me that we’re just now leaving that wack conference and only barely upgrading to the Sun Belt, but ig it’s better than nothing. Maybe one day they will listen to me and just go Independent like I’ve always wanted them to since all the decent teams left the cusa and just go independent and have the rights over our schedule to not have to play these wack schools each year and be able to have more control over it all.
Good teams this season utah cincinnati ohio state Oklahoma state spread offense vs pro style
Fresno?
Where’s Louisiana lafayette
Not really related, but as someone who has watched a few Cincinnati games and seen some highlights, why exactly are some so high on Desmond Ridder to the tune of being a first round pick? His accuracy and ball placement has always been underwhelming
A lot of that has to do with game management philosophy. He doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. Couple that with a poor offensive line. He was clutch when he needed to be but Cincinnati was built on defense
@@jenkins7535 I can understand that but I don’t see anywhere close to a first round pick. His accuracy isn’t very good
@@icandoallthings5326 no I agree I’m a Cincinnati fan. He played in a pro style offense and I think he ran a 4.5 40. I personally think it’s a weak qb class altogether.
Honestly surprised Kansas isn’t on this list
Need a lot more than just one game special
@@gill2069 They actually won two games, which is a miracle
UTSA would be 11
So proud of my Irish. GO IRISH
I think my Ducks were more surprising than the Utes tbh 🥲
Yeah. Oregon had the victory of the season … and with all due respect, wasted it. And Utah ended the season for the Ducks twice in blow out fashion.
@@luckybuckeye2283 for real. Utah is so underrated i got nothing but respect for them. after we beat ohio state i was so confident but ever since that game it went downhill from there. still love em tho
If Ohio State’s strength of schedule was 5 then Cincinnati’s would be -50
BYU?
No BYU? They beat Utah and Utah state and went undefeated against the PAC-12.
But look who they lost too ???
@@SoSelfMadeMedia title is most surprising, not best. Going 5-0 against the PAC-12 as an independent is surprising.
@@Hamnog84 Bro the PAC 12 is like the worse Power 5 😂😂😂😂 AAC is on the same level as them.. debate with yourself
@@SoSelfMadeMedia I agree the pac-12 sucks.
@@SoSelfMadeMedia Pitt lost to Western Michigan and they’re on this list lmao
Let's go pitt
No Notre Dame?
Kentucky at 10-3 was much better than preseason expectations
But almost no publication was saying UK would finish worse than 7-5. Many tabbed UK for 8-4. The Cats exceeded those expectations, that's true, but Kentucky is now a TOP 25 program and New Years Day and better bowls are now what Stoops has built for the University of Kentucky. They have the current longest winning streak of all teams in bowl games in consecutive seasons too. These aren't mediocre bowls either: two Citrus Bowls, Gator and Belk Bowls respectively. I expect Kentucky to win at least 9 regular season games in 2022, but could win as many as all 12. Yes, I said it, Georgia comes to Lexington and it wouldn't be unheard of for UK to pull of that win if College Gameday is in town. UK has given UGA some of their toughest games the past few seasons and even on Senior Day, at Georgia, the #1 National Champion Bulldogs only beat UK 30-13 in Athens, between the Hedges. Now, with that said, I think UK goes 10-2 with a loss to UGA and a loss on the road versus either Florida or Tennessee (but the Cats will get one of those two at least!)
P5 schools that do well aren't surprising. Especially not Michigan or Michigan state. UTSA and SDSU were much more surprising teams and they deserve to be here over P5 schools. If the Gators do well next year will they be here?
UTSA?!?!
Why did not the pick Georgia over Alabama for national championship
yessir utah gonna be even better next year
You just lucky you don’t gotta play BYU

Go pokes 🤠
Yeah, even I gotta say Michigan is the most surprising one. They were only suppose to go 5-7 this year and ended up going to the play-offs so props to them
MSU still beat them tho 😈
Actually I think they were expected to make a bowl, but our Spartans were the team that may have missed one. Look at what we did!
@@upbeatplays5264 lol yes MSU was suppose to go 3-8 And instead we went 11-2 and won our bowl game
ACC having a good season... Haha like FCS level opponents. How do you not have a great year.
Utah can play football huh 😐 need a nfl team there
No 👎 32 teams is way too much in my opinion, they don't need to add another one, but if a team can relocate there maybe 🤔
Where’s Georgia they were the most surprising team of 2021 projected to win 3-4 games and won a natty where’s our respect at GO DAWGS BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤️🖤💯💍🏆🏈🐶
I would have put Wisconsin in that list, simply because of, outside of Braelon Allen, just how awful their offense was. Mertz is looking like the second coming of Mike Samuel. I'm surprised they won nine games last year.
Bedlam was the most rigged game I've seen this year
