We have to remember that the E-M1, E-M1.2 and E-M1.3 were all flagship cameras in their day and they were are fabulous cameras. Before buying the E-M1.3 I tried out the Olympus cameras in the form of an E-M1 classic. My biggest regret was selling it off when I bought the Mark III version. What a mistake, I loved that camera, but I do love the Mark III as well. As a retiree with a fixed income, I can't go out and irresponsibly purchase the latest and greatest gear like I used to when I was in the working world, with a good income. Fortunately there's a lot of really great affordable used equipment that has been moved onto the experienced equipment sellers shelves. I'm very happy to take advantage of this gear. Like the camera bodies, lenses such as the 12-40 f2.8 PRO from Olympus (the first generation) are real bargains and in truth, their performance is stellar. These are the types of products that I'm adding to my kit.

I've shot a lot of different cameras, but the one that amazed me the most is the Sony ZV-E1. I shoot more stills than videos, yet this thing is the most incredible camera I have ever used. It's not an SLR type camera, it has no EVF, it has a 12mp sensor, but it has hardware that blows most other cameras away, mostly non-Sony cameras. Not that I am bashing other makes, I do own two Nikons, F2A and FE2. But this thing is a beast. Can't wait for the ZV-E10 II.

The original G9 definitely makes it to my list of 'unsellable' cameras. Point of sufficiency reached in every respect that matters (to me) and the big viewfinder magnification is icing on the cake. Also with modern software, shooting raw pretty much guarantees you'll get the shot you want with respect to pulling detail out of shadow areas and cleaning up unwanted noise. Not really feeling the need for full frame.

It’s amazing how you find a camera that just suits you. I have 3 Oly cameras, my fav being the EM1iii. However, if it had what my EM10iv has, a tilting screen, I’d be much happier. Whenever I pick up my EM10iv, I praise it for its lightness and tilt screen, and my EM5iii I praise it for its lightness (but that’s all, as I hate the little thumb grip), just wish they had some of the bits and pieces of the EM1iii, which I find very comfortable to use, but it has the variable screen. We are never satisfied! One of these days they’ll produce something everyone actually likes! Good thoughtful video, Brian.😊

Hi Brian from Western New York USA. I loved your video! I have all three EM1 models, don't get the M1.1 out nearly enough, but the 2&3 get some use. I Was on the fence for the new OM1 for quite a while and while it's got some nice updates, they're just not enough for $2500!!! The feature set on my existing gear is more than enough to make me scratch my head sometimes. Keep up the great work.

Gear truly doesn’t matter. Talented photographers can take good pictures with any camera. Having good ones just makes it easier for them. So… no, all you photographers out there, don’t believe the marketers. You don’t “need” a different camera. You just want one. But want is not need.

Em5 m1 was my favorite. I loved Olympus and what they did when releasing it. It was new , fresh to the market, and extremely fun to shoot. I do like my om1, and i liked my em5m2 and em1m3, but neither of these 3 have the same fun I experienced with the original em5. Just feel stale on my om1. I supplement it with new lenses, and they give a short burst of excitement

I'm an old guy with balance issues (so I use a walking stick) and budget issues (so I can't justify the cost of most "newer" used gear). Based in part from your review a couple years ago on the E-M1.1 I purchased a well used one for under $200 and took my time shopping for a good price on some inexpensive but well regarded used lenses. The one I use most is the weather sealed Olympus 14-150mm ii because of how often it rains (or threatens to) where I live. The E-M1.2 would be enticing to me *IF* it had the tilt screen, but I don't think I can deal with the fully articulated screen and shoot while using a walking stick. *Not everyone wants to shoot video, but we're usually stuck with the screen requirements of video shooters.* Honestly, it seems like there could be tilt screen and fully articulated screen versions of many cameras.

To be honest if you still enjoy your mk1 then stick with it. I use mine a lot and as a purely stills camera it’s really hard to beat. The mk2 has a lot over the mk1 but may not be worth the difference from your description.

Great video! Something lost in some reviews is the connection with a camera. How it feels in the hand, tactile quality, the viewfinder and just whether you like it. If you have a camera like that then that connection is probably worth a lot more than a few technical upgrades. A good camera doesn't stop being a good camera because technology improves. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone says they miss their last camera (or many other products) and regret upgrading.

Hi Brian, Bought my first OMD-EM1 Marki in 2014 for ~$1600 USD. Love it after 10 years! Just checked: I have 483,627 shots and it's still working w/o problems! Was worried that it would die & that I would be left w/o a camera...terrifying thought! Fast forward August 2022, bought a second OMD-EM1 Marki, barely used for $300 USD; today: 25,320 shots...perfect! Fast forward to October 2022: was gifted a barely used OMD-EM1 Markii; today 3801 shots. All operating perfectly! Still use original Marki with adapter & old OM Zuiko prime lenses. Use second Marki with 40-150 lens. Use Markii with 75-300 lens. Perfect! Have been faithful Olympus user since original OM-1 MD in 1978. If I could wish for anything, it would be the 100-400mm with IS for bird photography...someday, esp. once there's a second-hand market. Enjoy Wales!

I quite agree with you. In my case, I'm shooting Nikon DSLR, Fuji (X and GFX) and since few months ago, I got interested on testing Olympus so tried the Pen-F that I love a lot (after I was able to navigate those nasty menus without smashing it on the wall). As I got really happy with it, wanted to try an E-M1 (not OM-1 after hearing very bad comments about it's autofocus from Olympus ambassadors) so I compared E-M1 II and III and as you mention, no significant improvements that will change my life in the III version and not worth the extra 300€ second hand. Now I'm in love with my E-M1 II as I was love at first click. For me, it's about having fun with the camera and over the years I've build my list of favourite ones like Nikon D850, Fuji X-T3, X-E1, X-Pro1 and GFX100 and now my new Olympus E-M1. As per lenses, as I have old lenses and adapters I can use all kind of old lenses (mainly M42 ones) along with the modern ones and as happens with the cameras, it's a matter of having fun so for example, yesterday I went out with the Olympus Pen-F and an old Helios 44-2 (from Valdai) with the reversed front element that produces a crazy bokeh and had real fun with both. In conclusion, for me, the two factors that makes a camera or lens special are: they take the pictures I look after and mainly they provide a lot of fun when used. Some cameras take great pictures but in the end they are just cameras but I don't feel any emotion using them.

M1 mk3 has a focus point joystick, this so much faster than pressing arrow keys! Shooting moving subjects, this is a game changer...

Brian, the Canon D30 was the “special” breakthrough or landmark camera for me. While it was only 3mp, it changed how I did photography, and made my move from film to digital profitable, exciting, and fun and much more efficient. I bought it when it first appeared on the market in 2000, and at the time it seemed like a bargain. It was 3 frames per second, only had 3 autofocus points, had only 3 megapixels, and cost about $3000 when I bought it new in year 2000. I was thrilled to get it, use it, and considered it a “game changer” in an “affordable” digital camera. It was also much smaller than the more expensive, larger, heavier “pro” digital monsters that used Kodak backs with Canon parts (the Canon EOS D2000 or Kodak DCS 520 which had 2 megapixels). I sold my expensive $1,500 film scanner and film bodies and moved completely to digital then. In 2000, the Canon EOS2000 sold for $15,000 USD, (about $27,000 adjusted for inflation), which made it too expensive for me. The Canon D30 seemed like a bargain in comparison.

Viewed from a mostly video (rather than stills) perspective, my 'special' list out of the cameras I've owned would be:
    1. Lumix G6 - first G (not GH) series camera with a mic input, and the last with a 'power zoom' lever
    2. Lumix GX80 - for compactness and feeling great in the hand, and paired with a 12-60 or 14-140 lens is my usual 'travel cam'
    3. Lumix G9 - GH5-level video quality but with better stabilisation and video C-AF
    4. Olympus E-M1 iii - smaller than a G9, ergonomically almost perfect for me, adjustable video stabilisation, pretty good video C-AF and excellent battery life
    5. OMDS OM-1 - all-round best AF, 10-bit video quality, very low rolling shutter and ergonomically almost as good as the E-M1 iii.
I don't own a G6 anymore, and if I had to sell any of the others, the E-M1 iii would go first then the G9 - leaving me with the OM-1 and the GX80.

Agreed. I cant justify moving to OM1,but as an owner of an e-m1 mk1, I coukd justify the upgrade to mkiii, bypassing the mkii purely because of the joystick, which is a major improvement. The rest, as you say, is no biggie, but that joystick!

I agree with you. My way of buying is to buy the most up to date I can afford/justify. Were I buying now I’d buy a mk3 as they are more affordable and you do get more features as you rightly say.

As much as I enjoyed the EM1MK 11 the small changes as you call them the inclusion of a focus joystick and several small changes makes a great camera more refined and improved the overall ergonomics work much better, so you don't need big changes at times it the small improvements that just makes it more polished in its use. So I kept the MK11 and I don't think about selling it I feel it is like the Panasonic S5 and S5 MKII the upgrades are not huge but the S5 MKII has just the right amount of changes to make it a better camera, the reason why I will not buy the new Olympus OMD 1 is the price. As much as the camera has been improved it still is a 20mp 4/3 sensor and I can't see paying more money for it than my full frame cameras. Pentax K1 MKII, Nikon z6 MKII and ZF, Panasonic S5 and S5 MKII

  • @g0fvt

As an aside, all of my M43 cameras were purchased used while they were current models. It is sad to see just how low the shutter counts on them have been. I believe that one of my GX8s came to me with under 300 activations. Comically it came with a spare battery....
Digital photography should be more liberating, for a hobbyist wasted shots cost essentially nothing. There is no harm in going out in the garden with a coffee and your camera just getting to know it. As for the GX8 shutter shock, it did gain a lot of publicity in the day, but only applied to a narrow range of mechanical shutter speeds with some specific lenses. As you rightly said later firmware had a workaround to mask the issue by using the electronic shutter in that circumstance.
Certainly there a lot of very competent nearly new cameras on the market for good prices.

"you're supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"
im OK with my GH5ii, well at least i do. i have a Canon that'll take over the telephoto stuff eventually. because the GH5ii might be better for the lens sizes it still fell short for me for focusing. ive had some keepers but i feel the canon will do it a bit better.
the subject detection features are just a crutch for me but im learning from it, i can turn it off if i wanted.
