- LEEDS PARISH #37: ALWOODLEY
Alwoodley is a suburb of Leeds located 5 miles North of the city centre. Still a civil parish, it’s one of Leeds’ biggest and is one of the most affluent areas of the city.
The name Alwoodley is thought to derive from Old English “Æthelwald-lēah”, meaning “the woodland clearing at Æthelwald's farm”. It appears as Aluuoldelei in the Domesday Book
The route of the Roman road between Ilkley and Tadcaster passes through Alwoodley. Part of it was excavated along Lakeland Crescent in 1994
The area to the north is mainly countryside which includes the village of Eccup, famed for the massive Eccup Reservoir and being the village where the Emmerdale tour begins
Running along Alwoodley’s Western boundary is a huge wood. Named Adel Woods, there’s more than a few landmarks within its trees, including Adel Pond and The Slabbering Baby
Alwoodley is something of a sporty area of Leeds too. It has within its boundaries, no less than three golf courses, two rugby clubs, a football club, a cricket club and a tennis club
As such there’s a lot to see on this walk - and what a walk this was. This took me almost four hours, although it would have been quicker had it not have been punctuated by a spell of heavy rain.

Lived there for 20 years, my playground. Lovely. Played for Leos, lived in the Buckstones. Went to Alwoodley Primary and Allerton High, ran Eccup for years also. So many wonderful memories, thank you!

Lived in Alwoodley for the first 18 years of my life. The village green in my day was just known as the patch of grass next to Adel Woods and opposite the ‘bottom shops’ as opposed to the ‘top shops’ at the top of The Avenue.
Adel = Add-Ill. Nice video. The track built in the woods is brilliant and LCC have spent thousands over the years demolishing. Its great to see they've finally realised it's actually something good! Also the houses. 'Low value' you're looking at are 6 figures.
So so easy to get lost in those woods. I had to refer to my map no end of times, and even then it was sketchy
I had forgotten that Adel Woods might be in Alwoodley Parish, hence I forgot to say how to pronounce Adel, sorry! We also got it wrong when we moved to Leeds. Unbelievably it’s ‘Addle’. I’ve been fortunate enough to watch some filming on location of Emmerdale many years ago and met some of the cast. Well done for braving the rain and covering so much of such a large Parish.
Haha well at least I'm not the only one to say it like that. I imagine most of the locals hear both on a regular basis.

11:58 ‘low value properties’ is maybe correct by London prices but it’s 270k for a 2 bed semi in the Turnberrys & 350k for a 3 bed semi in the Birkdales or Sunningdales, It’s not cheap by Leeds standards!
Dont forget it's not just Leeds folk who watch the Leeds series. I have to make these almost from the perspective of a foreigner
