  • GEDLING PARISH #10 OF 12: WOODBOROUGH
Woodborough - “Stronghold by a Wood”
Back into Gedling, this week we come to Woodborough, a long and winding village which sits just South of Calverton, North of Lambley and to the West of the A6097 Epperstone Bypass. Literally the “fort in the wood”, or “stronghold by a wood”, Woodborough was another framework knitting village like its near neighbours, and even has a claim to be the birthplace of William Lee - the inventor of the stocking frame. Some two-storey cottages with ground-floor knitter's windows remain at the junction of Main Street and Shelt Hill, but most of that history is now long gone.
The word “Wood” occurs several times both in the village and around it. Such examples include the Wood Foundation Primary School on Lingwood Lane. There’s also Ploughman's Wood, Wood Barn Farm, Fox Wood and of course Woodborough itself, just in case there was any doubt you were in an valley full of trees. As you walk along the main street, you find yourself at times under a canopy, which I’ll admit was quite handy in the mid June heatwave.
In this episode we’ll be talking about Woodborough Hall and its history, as well as both pubs - The Four Bells and The Nags Head. We’ll also meet a huge stable block, a well disguised Baptist Church, the site of an old maypole, and a Garden Centre too.
    Lets go!

What a lovely village to live in. It has very interesting past history. Youve certainly researched masses of information. Many thanks.
