Belton - “Fire Village”
Ok everyone, this week we’re in Belton, a parish which has without a doubt totally won me over. Having never been here before, relatively speaking I didn’t know what to expect fully, but upon leaving I just simply didn’t want to go. I love it! Belton is a moderately sized village that’s roughly halfway between Ashby de la Zouch and Loughborough. It’s the second time we’ve been to a Belton on the channel. The first was back in North Lincolnshire.
Its name means “farm or settlement close to a beacon or funeral pyre”, or more simply “fire village”. The parish also includes the hamlet of Grace Dieu to the South, which has more than its fair share of landmarks, all in a cluster around the ruins of a priory. Its that area which made me fall in love with the place, but Belton village isn’t bad either. It has all the usual village amenities like a pub, a shop, a school, a village hall and a church, but it’s also got something unusual. That would be a maypole, which towers over the broad Market Square in front of the church.
There are several lovely cottages and other buildings that caught my eye, including an old chapel on Long Street and a Toll House opposite on Grace Dieu Lane. Its one of those villages where you just don’t know where to start.

I live nearby to Belton.
About 30 years ago the Landlord of one of the pubs there was widely acknowledged to be the rudest in the East Midlands. 🤣
