    I first met Arien two years ago while walking around Hollywood giving out socks to homeless people. She shared candidly about the abuse homeless women experience living out on the streets. You can watch that first video here: • Arien is a homeless wo...

Arien mentioned attempts to kill herself that prompted the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) outreach team to go visit her. They helped her with clothes and hygiene products and placed Arien on a housing list, but there are tens of thousands of homeless people in Los Angeles and not nearly enough housing to get people off the streets.
    Invisible People facilitates an online support group for homeless people. Arien and I became friends on Facebook. My last visit in February was rearranged. Arien wanted to update her story. In this video, she talks about being raped on her 3rd day of homelessness:
    • Homeless Woman's 3rd I...
    I never wanted to hit the milestone of a 3rd video with the same homeless person so a 4th interview with a young homeless woman is not something to celebrate. It's disturbing that in a few years time Los Angeles could not get Arien out of homelessness.
    This time of year communities is release their PIT (point in time) homeless count numbers. Many cities like Los Angeles will add some spin to the information to hopefully give an impression to the general public that some success in fighting homelessness is happening. Truth is, no matter what the PIT number is it's just a number. Only one homeless person sleeping outside is a tragedy.
    Here is Arien's GoFundMe if you'd like to help support her: www.gofundme.com/HumblyHomele...

    About Invisible People:
    Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as CZcams, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
    Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
    Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

      I have tried to get help for depression many times from my doctor but he doesn't care in the slightest. I have tried many antidepressants and they don't work for me. Either I get worse side effects like 'brain zaps' and headaches or no effect whatsoever. When I complained they made me feel worse he tried to lie to me that I must continue even though I had tried them for nearly 6 months. I think he wanted me to continue so he gets more money for the script rather than me getting better then he lied and said I should try MIND which is basically talking with poorly trained health professionals who do not have any real training for mental health so they understand what they are doing. I later found out on my own that there is ketamine I could of tried at a clinic in London which costs money but I would of tried this even though it would be too expensive for me. It would be actually worth going into debt for because the treatment can actually help rewire the damaged part of my brain and then lighter doses continued there afterwards. I am so angry this was kept from me for so long when I have been feeling suicidal for so many yrs and also I have felt hopeless for very long periods also.

      I think her ability to look nice, clean and apply make-up, while in her situation, works against her. If she doesn't tell you that she's homeless and depressed, nobody would know. Also, depression is a psychological diagnosis, that has to be assessed by a licensed professional. Some people just feel tired, lazy or drank to much (not saying this about her, this is what the SSI ppl could be thinking), and start saying they are "depressed". I see why they say, she's not depressed enough, though. When she talks about people should provide jobs, to help people, if you don't want them in your backyard. If she feels like she can work a job, or wants to work a job...I don't think social security will acknowledge her "illness". Hence, the "not depressed enough" answer.

    Been homeless a few times myself.
    A lot of people that live paycheck to paycheck working low wage jobs have that risk. 1 Missed check means homelessness if you dont have friends or family to help and a lot of people take that for granted.
    In-fact 2 of my friends I've known since middle school both were near homeless half a dozen times and every time their parents helped out and essentially saved them. My wifes ex husband is the same deal, he lost his job and didnt get another job for 7 months and his mom let him move in.
    That is everywhere and people seem to expect it, like everyone just has family to bear their burdens but the people that dont end up homeless like this and somehow they are worse than those other people? get real.
    The thing I hate most about people is how ignorant everyone seems to be when realizing the truth just takes a tiny bit of honesty on your part, but society's response is "Why be honest when you have an opportunity to put someone down?".

      For most women to give up make-up and perfume is like giving up hope and not being among the living. When you stop making yourself up that's when you've given up. These people are thinking they're making a fortune panhandling for Givenchy or Dior when the reality is like under $5 and Wet-N-Wild or NYX from a CVS. Especially if they're trying to present themselves to get side jobs to get by - no one's going to hire anyone who looks like a vagrant.

    • @nunyabidness8656
      @nunyabidness8656 Před 6 lety +4

      Tahsunda You're way off. I was once homeless and drug addicted. The only reason I got off the street and the drugs is from the help of a kind stranger (now my landlord). Of course some homeless people do bad things, just like some people who have homes do bad things. Some of them work jobs and still can't afford a home. From my experience most people on the streets have mental health issues (just as I did and still do).
      Some homeless people don't see their kids because their care takers don't allow them to, some don't because their embarrassed of their "lifestyle", some don't because they want to spare their children from having to worry about their situation, some have their kids while on the street and some don't see them because they just don't want to. Grouping all homeless people together is as silly as grouping all "homed" people together.
      When a city in texas decided to allow homeless people to work cleaning up the streets for pay, these people flooded in! Many people are desperate for work but just can't find any because their homeless. Do you realize how few people would actually employ a homeless person?
      If someone doesn't want to give people money or needed items, they don't have to but I will continue to do so. Once I give someone money/items it's their business what they do with it!
      I respect your opinion but i disagree!

      that's what I'm saying! Even If I don't have anything to give, I'd NEVER consider dehumanizing someone living on the streets. I'm from a city where homelessness is sort of glamorized because there's a community of togetherness, and helpfulness. BUT, it's still one of those things we can't take lightly. There are people living on the street getting things thrown on them while a billionnaire is president is literally toying with the civil/economic rights of other humans. Insane.

You must see the good in the acts of love from good Samaritans. They even cracked the egg so you wouldn't need to, but still you complain! Mama Mia, why are people so easy to whine and blubber over the charity of strangers? You wanted eggs Benedict with asparagus, Hollandaie sauce and caviar! 😖

      I would do so, but I am facing possible homelessness myself due to disability and lack of assistance.
      My mom just died without a will and I don't have help. I don't have a way to go back to school to be qualified for less physically demanding work and hopefully be able to have medical/dental care to help with the pain.
      I have little worry about someone stealing from me, because these things are temporary anyway.
      But I think we would need to see eye to eye when it comes to God and our lives, then it's more likely I could trust them not to think they need to steal or anything else... But instead we could even help one another in different ways.

    These stories break my heart, they truly do. Arien is an exceptionally bright, smart, together young lady. I'm surprised she has held it together for so long without having a breakdown or developing PTS syndrome from all she has experienced and witnessed on the streets of L.A. I feel so helpless, and I imagine a lot of people do. These "Invisible People" segments truly put a human face on the homeless crisis. Lately, I pass homeless people and I understand why some of them self-medicate: Life can be extremely painful, and sometimes you just want to numb the hurt. It's definitely not a solution to anyone's problems, but for the first time in my 55 years, I can now understand it. I believe homeless housing can work in many neighborhoods, so long as social services professionals are available onsite and the most responsible, stable residents are deputized to operate and manage the environment. Many of the people featured in these segments have these leadership qualities: They just need the resources to become stable and the support to develop these skills to put them into practice.

    Two year wait for Section 8 housing in my area. 10 year wait is crazy. It's like even Section 8 is telling the homeless to jump, to have the wait be 10 years.
    And, people should be glad that Mark got the other lady a van, and not judge him for not getting her an apartment. She now has something. It keeps her dry during rain, and it's a place to sleep, besides the side walk, and she can turn the heat on in winter, and it's her own domain. Yes, it's not an apartment, but we should be happy about the van. At least it's something. People make it a point to judge, and I want to yell at the judgmental. It's sickening and tiring that the homeless run into thousands of judgmental people, and MAYBE one or two aren't judgmental. Today, I saw a guy wearing a shirt that said, "Only God can judge me," and I wanted to tell him, "Nice shirt."
    Like Mark said, hopefully his next interview with Arien will be in her living room.

  • @rejoicemultimediaimages

    It’s good to see you still smiling , Arien.
    I understand that you are a young woman who has freedom to make yourself look good with makeup. Although people judge you & may prevent to help you because you don’t seem desperate just like what other says that you are not depressed enough. I think that it’s mostly because of fake homeless people who are out there to collect money with deception. I’ve seen some myself pretending as if they are with disabilities. I felt bad to be deceived by them. Since then, I try to decent whether the individuals with pan handling is true or not before I decide to help them. Some of them are so make believe. It’s sad to worry about it to help someone who are in needs.
    Most people who help homeless are not financially well off. I try to save money to manage each month by purchasing cheap same foods & support them, but when I find out that they cheat on me, I felt robbed. It hurts.
    It’s because this world is evil & has full of unrighteousness people around. In a ways, if you want money from others badly, you could do anything to make people believe you with homeless looking but you don’t. Well, people have a stereotype of homeless. You may can change their judgement over homeless. Stay positive is great idea. I admire you on that. Most people lose smiles in their tough times you know.
    I’d suggest you to keep praying to God for your hopes & proclaim them in Jesus name. There’s a power in His name & in our words.
    Praying for you!!! Be strong! 🙏

    Why can't she go to a temp agency and try to be an office worker or go to a supermarket and try to get a job as a clerk? I don't understand how she can go on begging in the street with how mean people are. Isn't it easier to just get a job? Why wouldn't they hire her? She looks nice and is polite. If there is no help from the social services, then why not just try to work? If she has a steady income, she can maybe get a room with roommates. I feel like there must be some deeper reason this is going on.

      OK, you're homeless.
      You go get an application and start filling it out.
      Name: everyone has one
      Address: whoops! Think they'll take "third doorway past 5th and Main" as an address?

    • @KatyGroves
      @KatyGroves Před 6 lety +4

      She's shared in a previous interview that she worked as a security guard multiple times, but kept losing her jobs when her employers found out she was homeless. It is really hard to find work and keep work when you don't have an address! A lot of people do not want to employ the homeless by default, even if you're a great employee. It's also common for people on the street to develop learned helplessness. After awhile, they give up. Mark has talked about that on this channel before and I have experienced it having been homeless and sold before. It's a natural consequence of long-term trauma, may not have been an issue for the person before, and may not be possible to overcome without adequate professional assistance that may not be available when you are extremely poor.
      Edit: I see at the end that Mark mentioned learned helplessness and Arien said she has not accepted her situation. I still stand by what I said, as I imagine that it has still affected her to some degree. Even if a person doesn't completely give up, it seems unavoidable to me that homelessness would drag a person down. For most people it is one hell of a trauma.

    • @Babu-kr3cr
      @Babu-kr3cr Před 6 lety +8

      If you get money you go to the post office and get a PO box, then you have an address. It used to cost only $15 for a year. You can also get one at FedEx i believe or Mailboxes Etc., those kind of shipping places. You need some imagination and skills. She seems smart enough though.

    • @KatyGroves
      @KatyGroves Před 6 lety +1

      You might get depressed for a while but then you have to look at your situation and make your best effort to pull yourself up. You can't wallow in your helplessness forever. It is part of growing up. What do you mean you were sold, were you trafficked as in human trafficking? Sometimes you have to lie and say you have a place if that is what it takes. I can't imagine someone firing a good working just because of their home.

I truly want to help people whom can't help themselves however, I've seen others whom did allow persons to live with them and in every case, it was a disaster for all parties involved and the homeless went right back to being homeless while the helpers refused to ever help another homeless person again. Theres power in numbers. Martin Luther King taught us that. The rich are very afraid of the growing number of poor around them. At any moment thousands could easy over run a single neighborhood before any police could stop them. The wealthy need to stop and think that the protections they THINK will protect them are really non existent. Look at New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Entire communities got overtaken once the supplies and help were no longer there due to government mismanagement. I never condone violence but there is going to be a time in the near future when the have-nots are going to far out number the wealthy. And when social structures continually break down, people are just going to mob together in the thousands and take whatever they need.
