  • These days, updating Windows is like playing Russian Roulette. Microsoft keeps breaking things, and I have to continually figure out how to fix them. I recently had ANOTHER problem with Windows Update. After trying everything, this is the solution that finally worked for me! Don't worry: they'll break it again soon enough!

For the people asking why even update windows, how do I stop it? Every day it downloads the same darn update and every day it has to undo the changes because the updates could not be completed. I gave all your vids bout this a shot and still I get the message after restarting "undo changes" because windows updates didn't work. I did install a new gpu in August, but that was happening before all of this still. Tracing it back, I can't really think of anything specific that could have caused it since this has been a few months now. I believe whenever windows 11 launched, which I also cannot run that with my specs. You're very comprehensive and a great instructor, I'm just stuck is all.

There seems to be a serious problem with the September updates - and sometimes the August ones. Just yesterday, I had to do ALL my fixes on 1 computer, and it still didn't work! So then I disabled MalwareBytes (anti-virus thingy), and then rebooted. Ta-DA! It finally worked. I'm really at a loss as to what the heck they did to break updates so thoroughly. :(

You've probably tried this, but unplug everything unnecessary - especially any USB devices other than mouse/keyboard (if it's a desktop). Also, remove optical disc if it has a DVD/Blu-ray drive. Back in the day when I was attempting to install a Win 10 update on my old laptop, I actually had to remove the disc and leave the optical drive tray OPEN when the puter rebooted. Then the update worked. I'm still not quite sure why that helped, but I had tried everything under the sun. I'm guessing it had something to do with Windows starting and looking at possible boot devices, and leaving the optical drive tray open threw a wrench into the works so that the update ignored the drive. If nothing else works, you just want to reinstall Windows. I had to do that on my wife's PC. After Win 7, then upgraded to Win 10, then repeated big/small updates and Win 10 upgrades, it just got totally messed up. It was doing the weirdest things... Finally, I just backed everything up and did a clean install of Win 11, and Ta-DA! Works fine now.

So, how does Windows 11 feel? I don't want to rush into it yet.

Few years ago about 8 months before XP Support ended I made up my mind to see how far I could push XP before it failed. It OS totally failed in a little more that 2 years. By this time Nothing supported it and it simply dies with zero recourse. I should point out that for the previous six months I was spending 25 hours per week maintaining it to keep it going. I was so worn out with it all that I took a 1 year break from even buying another computer. I moved on to 10 Pro with very little difficulty - I had heard for quire some time that 10 was a steep learning curve, but was not. One thing for sure is that I won't do that again. I've utterly given up trying to get Win10 to update, I'll be running 1909 from here on out. I refuse to invest any more time and effort into this.

I tried this and it didn't work. It made it about 80% into the update, then went to a black screen that said, "Rolling back changes..." with no explanation. Some computers just won't update and Microsoft doesn't care enough to fix their installer. My conclusion at this point is that they want things to be broke to keep an army of IT people on corporate payrolls, it's probably part of some kickback scheme. I'm not an IT expert so I hit my limit to what I can do long ago.

I have no idea how you have so many subs that literally had nothing to do with anything related to the install not working….

My computer has everything but the try again button. Windows is truly the worst operating system in the world.

Do this: buy an Apple and throw the Windows computer away.
