      @@kestrel7493 the problem is that melee can be a difficult game to get into, and while we do have a ton of great people focused on making melee as a game and as a community a more welcoming space, a lot of people still do have this idea of what the melee community is. elitists, stubborn people sticking to an old game, smelly lmao. what a lot of people fail to realise about melee is that its biggest strength is its community. melee is incredible as a game but it certainly has a BRUTAL learning curve. the reason people are so willing to toss themselves into that is because of the community and how much passion there is, the love of the game. the real way to grow the melee community is to bring more people into the community, because from there, a good portion of those people will develop the same passion we have. those preconceived notions of the melee scene are only backed up when someone even tries to play the game and it feels like shit (because to someone who only plays ultimate or whatever it will at first, its very difficult to argue that melee feels great when u pick up a controller and play for the first time). the problem with that is that if they already want to believe that melee is a bad game, that awkward and uncomfortable feeling will just make them put down the controller when really, once u push past that barrier, and get over that learning curve, melee grants you more freedom than nearly any other game out there and it feels incredible. that's what people from outside the community dont understand. when a melee player who's passionate goes on and on (prime fucking example right here lmfao) about how special the game is and how its the best game ever made or whatever, all the have in their mind is either a bad experience with the community or the game or just a general understanding from other people, and they're like... but my game is good why do u say that my game feels like garbage, or, its an old game move on, or whatever idea they already had. you dont have to enjoy melee or even like the game, that's fine !! not everybody has to be willing to get over that learning curve. but i think melee players just get caught up in their passion that sometimes it can come off as elitism, although there are definitely some not so pleasant people out there, there always will be.

      @jundullah9869 Před 2 lety

      @@somsnosa. why are y'all non melee players saying the same thing ? We know that Melee don't give a good image for the beginners, we know that it's really hard to take him in hands and to became just decent not even good, we know that you will play some hundreds hours with a single character to became just decent and playing decent matches in unranked, by decent matches i mean not being destroyed 4 stocks to 0. We already know all these things, but the social aspect and especially the community part make all these harsh things so sweet. I mean, knowing that if you play a lot and became a top 8 player, you can make history with a single match, became a member of the great Melee family, all these things make all the hard mental and techskill grind more more easy and less sour. So all these things to say, the Melee history was at the manner it has to be, there is no other Melee history that we want because it's just perfect how it is, the golden era, the 5 gods era, the platinum era, if you have a problem with the state of the Melee community, just know that the problem isn't us, but you. (PS ; i'm not a Smash 4/Ultimate hater, i already love SSBU and really enjoy seeing MkLEO or Glutonny playing, but it's not the game of my heart. And sorry if i seems harsh and trash talk, it was not expected lol.)

I remember watching the intro and just being mesmerized at all the characters and the passion for those franchises represented. I played it a lot both by myself and with my friends, with some of my fondest memories with those friends revolving around it. When I got a little older I began getting more into Nintendo games and eventually games as a whole. Melee has a special place in my heart because of how it influenced my love for gaming with the developer's passion and how it affects me even now os much time later. This game has always been a part of my life to some extent. I still remember when my friend Cole stayed the night at my home in McKinney when I was in 4th grade, and he brought this game over to my house to play. It was my first time ever playing a Super Smash Brothers game, and shortly after, I would beg my parents to get Brawl for Christmas. Melee would be out of my radar until about 2013 or so when Smash 4 was starting to come out, but around that time, i would still consume Smash Bros related content on CZcams like Smashtasm. Around that time, I'd start watching the competitive scene on CZcams and follow players like Mew2King, Hugs, Hungrybox and Sethlon after watching the Smash Bros documentary.
    I had always enjoyed playing video games since I was little, and I always had specific game series that I fixated on. When i was very little, it was Mario Sunshine and Pokemon Pearl, then Sonic Adventure 2 (along with the whole Genesis line-up) and Metal Gear Solid 3 and V. But Smash was different. I wasnt really good at other fighting games growing up. Its wasnt until recently that I started to really understand traditional fighting games on a more fundamental level (i'm still pretty dog shit at them, but I at least understand how I would go about getting better at those games if i wanted to), but Smash Bros has always been a series that was incredibly accessable to people of any skill level. There's something for everyone, but there's also this drive in the community that pushes people to want to improve. It was something I really needed in my life back then.
    While I'm incredibly good at Ultimate (like, i could probably take local tournaments if i wanted to apply myself, but i'm more so fixated on competitive Yugioh nowadays), Melee has always been too much for my hands, so I probably wont ever learn how to play it on a competitive level myself. I blame Smash 3DS for that mostly, that game is also murder on one's hands due to bad ergonomics and I all but destroyed my wrists playing that game throughout high school every day. But as a spectator sport, Melee is easily just as interesting as any other individually driven, non video game sport like Nascar, Formula 1, Golf, Tennis, Poker, Magic the Gathering or Yugioh (and i dont think its that far fetched to call TCG games analog sports if Poker is considered one already).
    There's always something new going on in the ongoing story of this game. Some new player rising to the top, some new technique being discovered, some new innovation like Slippi that completely changes how we experience Melee. Smash Ultimate may be the best selling fighting game of all time, but Melee is just as much a quintessential corner stone of the genre like games such as Street Fighter II, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Melee walked so Ultimate could run, and while I think people will still play Ultimate long after the inevitable sequels come out, the same is true for Melee and it'll keep on being played even after people get tired of Ultimate.
    Here's to another 20 years of excellence.

I starting playing the game because of some guy I went to school with after going to parties where there was a set up off to the side, little did I know that these people that I played with and taught me the basics of melee would become my best friends and arguably some of the most important people to me. 20 years strong and so many more to go! It's all love in the melee community.

    I have no way to prove this to anyone (deleted my account a few years ago) but some of you might remember the "Melee 20XX timeline" from like 7 years ago on /r/smashbros.
    That's me, I made that. I was a sophomore? in high school at the time and was bored out of my mind in English class, so I made the timeline. It was just memes and a way of poking at my friend who I mentioned on the timeline, and I never expected it to get any attention. Just a bit of passion.
    I made that timeline hoping that Melee would be a thing for a hundred years to come, and that people would never stop playing this fucking great game. I'm really glad to see it's still here seven years later.

    It's crazy that I found the smash community in 2014, I remember being a junior in high school watching the melee documentary and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. Can't believe it's already been 7 years since then and I don't know where I'd be without this game, without those weekends playing smash all day and all night with my best friends. Thank you melee, even though I played smash 4, smash as a whole would be nowhere without the melee community. Thank you for bringing me some of the best times of my life and some of my favorite memories, thank you.

    I love how the melee meta switched over the years. I think when I joined in 2015, the meta was "play to be the best" but now, in the past couple years, the game has evolved so far past that to the point where no single person is aiming to be the #1. It's now itself about having fun, curating your community and I can't be any happier to be playing the game right now

The continual hype and perpetual storylines across so many folks all utilizing and pressing forth with the cleanest and coolest of tech will never cease to amaze me.
