This was actually very instructive honestly. Cuddos to those who found f4!
The third position makes sense as well, with the goal to put pressure on the backwards pawn weakness, but contrary to the queen and rook combo (my answer), you focus on it with your weakest pieces first (knight and rook) and you can also lift the rook and double potentially. These subtleties are what makes good players become great players! Thanks for this, I like it very much.

The last position was the most interesting. White has a space advantage. As I'm a positional player, instinct says avoid exchanges as exchanges open lines for enemy activity. My thought would be to infiltrate another piece onto the fifth rank, by moving my Knight to attack the enemy's Knight pawn. Forcing a pawn advance then enables my Knight to gain a second fifth rank outpost. This in turn forces the repositioning of Black's Queen. Eventually Black's position will become too cramped and the resulting exchanges can be manipulated to my advantage.

Glad he looked at the Na3 in depth. As long as black does anything but defend the b5 square (not pawn necessarily) then white is in a good move. Was the only move I really liked because it's a move highly likely to be an inaccuracy for your opponent if they push the pawn. Just moving the knight to b5 is great because black's forced to do something about the attack on the queen and then you can develop. Pushing the a or even the c pawn would be great. Suddenly Black needs to play carefully as well.

As a lower rated player I was happy to find f4 on the second one when most did not. The third position I also went f4. My thinking was it opens up lines for my rook and queen. More of a long-term plan, since the opponents position was so well defended. I also noticed when black captures the pawn, it lines up my bishop with their backwards pawn and queen. Unfortunately, in my head I missed the knight hop into the weakened square.
Although it was not SF’s top choice, i’m glad to see it was still a relatively equal position.

on the first problem, n-d5 was hoping to force an exchange - that black would capture with the knight. white could then sacrifice the rook rxd5, allowing white to push p-f6 on the next move. the goal was to eliminate the knight from inhabiting p-f6. but as you noted, black could capture with the bishop first, retaining the knight.
i now see that b-d3 bxd3 RxD3 ... then allows the knight exchange to be forced on d5, with rxd5 threatening p-f6. but it's not forcing.

I felt clever finding f4 as a 1450. My thoughts:
    - black has a scary battery at f2. Those rooks are a real problem.
    - often 'blocking' an attack angle here is a sharp idea.
    - F4 defuses the rook battery, any takes by black are bad.
    - en passant? The knight eats it AND the queen is threatened back. Seems good.

Position 1: OK, I didn't see the Bxg7 bit at all, very nice idea. (Taking the rook is still decent, though.) Still picked the correct move with the tactic. ;)
Position 2: Qg4 gang here. I considered f4, but was a bit scared of opening things up like that. Black is attacking white and I was rightfully scared that white's pieces are elsewhere and not doing much on the king side, but I underestimated how quickly f4 brings _everything_ into the game. (I also considered Qe1 followed by f4 to trade queens that way, but decided I preferred Qg4 since it's more immediate. Never saw the Rf3 move, holy shit that's a disaster for white)
Position 3: I went for the "f4 to trap bishop" plan, which seems OK, even if Stockfish slightly prefers Na3. That said, it's very obvious that black can reply with exf4 and trapping the bishop won't really happen, so my real idea was that I'd open up the position and bring in either the bishop or rook... I guess I just prefer a more open position, and f4 _forces_ that to happen, otherwise white does, indeed, trap the bishop.

Once Black takes with the Queen, we capture on E2 and fork Black's King and Queen. In the end, we're just up material, no? If Black captures the Knight after we move to F5, can'tbwe just attack the kingside?

  • @simonegiordano5137
    @simonegiordano5137 Před 2 lety

Well actually… Stockfish 14 at depth 30 thinks Na3 is a bad move in position 3 because you allow h5 by black with dangerous counterplay. That’s why it thinks you should either push a4 to strike first and bust open the queen side or play Ne3 to gain control over the f6 square.
These kind of closed and complicated positions cannot be analyzed with the engine at a low depth. You have to reach at least depth 30 to have a clear idea of what might remotely be the best 2-3
I think Na3 is actually subpar from an human perspective too, because if you give time to black to start an attack on the kingside then he can easily shift some of the pieces over. While white is essentially blocked by is own pawns and has a hard time to move the pieces to defend the attack.

So when You ask again Later, the AI has Been Working on that Problem in the Meantime, and its Answer might Change.
