- Answering the age-old questions we've all asked ourselves hundreds of times. "Can I afford that." In this Talk I dig into what "afford" actually means in the big picture of our own personal financial situation. And NO, I am not a financial advisor. :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the "Hickok45 Talks" Channel. This channel is a place for me to just pontificate about random topics that somebody out there might find interesting. I will talk about firearms issues quite a lot, but I'll also exercise my license to talk about any topic I might pretend to know something about.
If you have a topic you'd like me to address, let me know. Doesn't mean I'll address it, but who knows, I might.
Thanks for your support, and I hope you'll subscribe to all three of our channels and keep up with all the brilliance here!!! :-)
/ @hickok45 - Our main channel.
/ @hickok45clips - Our channel where John pulls clips from our existing library of videos.
/ @hickok45talks - This channel where all material is new material where I talk about one specific topic in each relatively short video. Hope you enjoy.
My wife told me, if I buy one more gun she was leaving me. I bought 3 just to make sure!
LoL
Get out of debt, stay out of debt, have an adequate emergency fund, live within your means, keep investing wisely.
As a young 20 year old boy learning to navigate life, I appreciate this. Talking about stuff I haven't even learned to consider yet, thank you Hickok
Man
You're a man, not a boy, as the substance of your comment indicates. Learning and applying what you have learned-- as you are doing by watching and commenting here-- and teaching others is peak masculinity.
@bhoward9378 I want to be a good father one day, and I want to actually be able to raise and prepare that boy or girl for the world. Can't do that if I can't even learn to support myself lol
You’re a grown man. Not a boy.
Great topic Hickok, life is so unpredictable.
Great topic!! Delayed gratification mindset is required for a happy life!
Always live below your means is what I live by.
This channel is about 5 years late! Hickok wisdom, is what the people needed for some time now. A great offshoot from the main channel.
The answer is no. You can't afford that. Put it back. LOL.
Hickok just shamed me out of spending my kids’ college savings on a new revolver. 😢
That revolver only costs about 2 or 3% of just one degree credit at a typical college.
Trade schools are better than college 😊
@skootr924 definitely. I went both to college for a Bachelor's then I went to Trade school to become a commercial electrician. I especially enjoyed being paid to go to classes once a week for the whole day. Being paid the same wage to go to class that I did to work in the field was way better than working full time delivering pizzas to pay for my tuition when I was earning my bachelor's degree.. .
@@svbarryduckworth628 Awesome!! I learned silkscreen when I was younger. That's part of my retirement plan. I've been a jack of all trades since (but a master of none) over the plethora of occupations (worked for an electrician also). Work hard so you can play harder.
Writing out of Sweden I can say that pistol shooters here are very familiar with your channel and we really enjoy it! If budget is limited focus on a few guns that you really enjoy, like a CZ or Smith & Wesson revolver. They are both mighty popular here. God bless America!
I have always tried to remember to plan for tomorrow but don’t forget to live today, because time and family are not guaranteed. It has worked out pretty well for me. I could have saved more money, but the kids grew up quickly and now we have a lot of spare time.
If you have to ask, you can’t.
Wisdom is easy to dismiss but difficult to earn.
Hi Hickok,my dad told me about the envelope system. I used it when I went on my own when married and showed my kids that system. Still use a form of it still today at 69 years young. It does take some discipline not to keep tapping one of the envelopes.
Love this new series of videos, guys! Thank you for adding this channel, keep doing what you’re doing!
I ask myself two questions. Can I afford it and do I want it. Sometimes putting enjoyment in your life plays into this decision! Life is good!
I can’t even afford food, but you have to eat. We’ve cut to the bone just to pay the bills. I use envelopes to divide cash up so I know I’ll have the money for each bill, food and gas. Good advice👍
I enjoy the new channel, wasn't expecting the topic but watched all of it lot's of great points.
I love this... more !
Thanks Hickok, this was very insightful for a 36 year old man trying to buy a house.
Hickok45 Talks.. Just subscribed to this channel too. I had that happen to me a couple times in the early days. Go on vacation or spend the "extra" on something and then something else tears up, goes out or whatever and leaves you saying "well now what". Fortunately it always worked out for us. I had a friend that when he got paid each week if he didn't have a bill due that week he would blow all of his money on stupid stuff. If he had a bill he would pay it but if not....money gone. No savings account, no emergency fund, no nothing.
Thank you 🙏🏻

Another question to ask is “if I spend this money how long will I need to replace it”? It’s asking about cash flow as well as what’s in your account. If I want a $3000 vacation, can I replace that money in 6 months? A year? Three years?
I've had to redo my budget several times in the last few years.. working (juggling) two jobs as needed. Start a gold fund, that's how it I bought my first car, still have it today.
I was having a vibrating sound from my computer that I have had for about four years now. The question became: Can I afford a new computer or should I replace the bad part?
Cost of a new computer at the caliber I have: $900 and well above. (No current sales going on)
Cost of replacing the power supply unit of the same caliber: $70.
I took the self repair route and saved at least $830.
Of course YMMV.
Good work man!
A better question is if it fits the budget, is congruent with our long-term economic plans, is necessary and/or there are other things on the agenda that are more important.
Great channel!
Love the new channel
I bought two guns recently, and I really shouldn’t have.I could have just got one,and been alright,I really didn’t need to get another one right after.I ended up buying a micro pistol, then decided I really wanted a full size.I think if I bought the full sized first,I wouldn’t have got the micro pistol right after, and would have waited.I feel we all buy stuff we really shouldn’t have, but like they say you only live once right????😂😂😂😂
I'm not sure but it seems like you're telling me I should buy that M1A I've always wanted.
The problem with buying guns isn't even the gun anymore. It's the obligation to buy ammo over time. And 308 is just too expensive.
I realize the guns I enjoy the most are the cheaper ones I don't mind breaking or running up the mileage. Like the SKS, savage axis, 380, 1911,870 etc. the more pricey stuff is more stressful to own than anything. I used to want mp5 and kriss vectors and shit. Not no more 😂
It’s a shame we don’t teach budgeting in schools from a young age
Sure is, especially now that everybody has a spreadsheet at their fingertips. So easy to keep track of it on a simple spreadsheet.
Who four years ago could have seen just how expensive everything would become? Who has any actual idea how much purchasing power their savings will have at the point they think they will be ready to retire? That being the case, how much do you actually need to retire?
If you're paying interest you're losing money, how much money can you afford to lose.
Spend it before it’s worth any less 😅
Debt is slavery.
Everytime I see women, I ask myself "can I afford that?"
Answer. No!
spend less time looking at escort services buddy.
😂😂😂 Hickock should of addressed that one..
The answer that stops me from spending often is...I can afford it, but do i really want too.
My biggest challenge is keeping cash on hand in an inflationary time. I know that I need cash, but inflation is destroying money in the bank. I buy fractional gold every payday, but it is difficult to leave my emergency cash savings account alone.
Got to live on a budget..
Hello Hickock45...What do you think of the current version of Excel?
Not just a handsome face, sage advice given to all 🇺🇸
That "dumb guy" has bookoo bucks!!!
A budget will help,
Hello hickok45 let talk about the flies
Let not him that smoketh despise him that smoketh not; and let not him which smoketh not judge him that smoketh: for God hath received him.
I feel your advice is falling on deaf ears. With this failing economy many, I repeat many people are maxing out credit cards. The only way out of that debt is to file bankruptcy. But even bankruptcy has it's own problems.
I'm rich in grace!
As long as there's enough left over to buy ammo. haha. New channel ? ..."hickok45 finances 101"
The average retirement account balance for people aged 55-64 is $537,560. I have no idea how they retire on that. Save and invest wisely.
And the averages in populations like this are always skewed upward due to the small percentage of people with incredible net worth. The actual median numbers in this category are much less.
if I cant buy 2, I cant afford one...
Yes, a good rule of thumb. I've heard that before - good way to easily and quickly check ourselves.
Jed Clampet had $40 million
About half of America needs to watch this video . Record Credit Card debt. Over half of American are living paycheck to paycheck with no savings. Is it basic Economics 101.
I bet u were many students favorite teacher… What’s ur PhD in, Dr. Hickok?
What age group is he talking to? How do you not know what recurring bills you have?
Yeah, lots of obvious questions we could ask all these folks who actually make decent money but don't have 400 bucks for an emergency, at least according to surveys and statistics we hear about.
Apparently, there are quite a few folks who just mindlessly write checks or pay bills as they come in but have no concept of a budget.
Hey I’m 20 I’m just trynna buy a car. Got into a lot of trouble and personal problems but I’m good now and have 5 grand cash for one. I’m wondering if anyone knows what a good price point for one used but reliable is?
