    Fascinating to see this older video of Momotaro when he was just 10 years of age. Yes, there is a big difference in maturity between Momotaro (already a Silverback) and his son Gentaro (still a black back) at the same age. I do see a strong resemblance between the two of them though. I love Momo's personality, he is a stoic, laid back, timid fellow, and very handsome. ❤️

      You are all fortunate to be near enough to see such remarkable animals as you have in japan. I feel fortunate to be able to be near a very great Sue here in St Louis Missouri us but I can't go as often and to hear the people in the background to see the little kids sometimes it is really great to know that these remarkable animals all of them are appreciated. And I don't think anyone would deny that the caretakers the people the managers the people who have done the cement work etc all have some care for the animals you can't be near them and not.

    Such a difference in the size and maturity of Momotaro compared to his son Gentaro at the same age. Momo is already a Silverback at this age. As usual, Momo is cautious and alert, as he doesn't like change very much. He is, and always has been a very handsome fellow. So nice to see how he has grown with a family of his own now. Thanks for the throwback video, and a little blast from the past. ❤️

    How wonderful seeing Momotaro explore his new home. He's taking in all the vegetation and foliage, and eating his carrots. I'm glad he has more space to roam in the new gorilla house, and lots of places to climb. But I still wish this beautiful silverback was able to see the open sky and not have bars above.

      It sucks but it’s part of the species survival plan in case the wild gorillas (and all great apes) go extinct. Unfortunately a real possibility in our lifetime. That helps me feel better about it. Momo and his offspring may literally have to repopulate the species if we can’t stop idiots from killing them for bush meat and destroying their home.

      You're thinking about Momo's current space from a human perspective -- YOU would want to see open sky, but what would a gorilla prefer? I would argue that since gorillas live in dense jungles with thick, overhead canopies, and low light underneath, the ceiling at Kyoto is probably more similar to what they feel comfortable with, plus it essentially doubles the floor area of the exhibit because the gorillas can traverse the entire enclosure by hanging from the ceiling. When the keepers put food items on top of the roof it's very similar to how they would climb trees in the wild to feed. And perhaps most of all, the gorillas get tremendous exercise up there and on the elaborate system of ladders, beams and ropes. I see Momo's family enjoying their space much more than Shabani's family in their space which resembles a prison yard. Shabani's family rarely goes out into their space, instead they stick close to the building because I think it's the only place they feel comfortable, the rest of the space is too open and too bright. I hear a lot of people complain that Momo's enclosure doesn't have any grass but I notice that Shabani's family rarely ventures out into the grass, instead they mostly stick to the concrete areas around the building.

  • @NaomiCurtis
    @NaomiCurtis Před 2 lety +14

    Also they very loud noises and words in emotions that are conveyed by those loud and familiar sounds of people talking and laughing seem to be also of some distraction for him. But that's nothing that we can fix. When I really find interesting is with his much younger face how much closer he looks to gentaro. I think there's a much stronger resemblance as one as they both age. And he is a handsome guy but you can almost see his silverback starting to become more prominent over these videos as he meets a mate for one. I just find this fascinating and I wish he were in a natural habitat and it is taking too long but change has been happening.

      Male gorillas living among other silverbacks (typically their fathers) will unconsciously arrest their physiological development for several years. Since Momotaro's father died before he was born, he skipped the blackback phase, but Gentaro will likely remain a blackback for a few more years.

    If they can laugh at a terrified powerful silverback who has no means of retreat, then what does that tell you about humanity? And how these incredible powerful critically endangered creatures are housed & treated. No stimulus that I can see. That loud construction noise is insane. Again, adding to his stress.
    I feel so sad that he was so frightened and alone. Even a young silverback should be confident and assertive. Seeing him extremely timid, so unsure and on high alert the whole time was awful to see, even as he was eating, he was not relaxing. I'm really disgusted by those people who were literally intimidating him. He could see & hear them, increasing his stress. We all know gorillas can die from stress 😢

    Even though this is an old video, and the troop has a different and much smaller artificial enclosure, I do wish this zoo would really consider replacing the clear plexiglass with tinted plexiglass in order to lessen the visible outside stressors, [e.g. humans yelling] it's a simple [not expensive] way to lessen the troop's stressors and possibly prevent even more aggressive behavior. Some zoo are also trying one way mirrored glass, so that the gorillas can't even see people. There are so many ways they could improve their lives with less man-made options. The current enclosure is just way too small, and it's not appropriate. Sadly, #kyotocityzoo is financially struggling, which is another scary factor.

I felt bad for him as the men doing it did nothing to calm him or take concern of his anxiety. I don't care for the location he & Genki are raising their boys. It's soul sucking, mind numbing, trapped forever in gloom feeling and it's in their eyes from even very young. That's why the youngest is such a little brat... He's carrying the lost dreams and happiness of his family for the zoo and guests to benefit. Too much for the little one.

    Wow!! Momotaro was such a big boy at 10 years old compare to Gentaro's weight and stature now at 10 years old to Momotaro!!! What a hugh deference!! Momo looks like a full size silverback here. Did he skip his blackback phase or what?? Lol

    Thank you so much for this video, it was such a treat for me. I found this wonderful family when Kintaro was around 1 year old, although i have found many videos of the
    family before then. Momotaro is such a beautiful silverback and his sons are going to be as majestic as he is. Momo in this video reminds me of Genki, she often has the
    same bemused look:) Gentaro is now the same age as Momo is here, i hope to see him soon with a silver back. Again many many thanks. Xx

    Seeing these animals in such small enclosure’s is saddening. In the wild their homeland would be 3-15 square kilometres not 50 x 100 meters. In these small spaces as the animal gets older they become docile much the same as keeping a working dog like a German Shepard in a 1 bedroom apartment who only gets out only once or twice a day for a walk.

  • @justicewillprevail1106

    He us such a smart animal. His examination of the entire area. It seems to me he was trying to figure a way to climb out of the place. Poor baby must have been nervous and stressed during the initial stage

      Парк Уэно конечно не сравнится с этим вольером. Я тоже видела на ютубе место, где Момотаро провел свое детство - там очень красиво! Момо пока не знает, что такое созданные людьми пластиковые бутылки и прочее, и не понимает как ими пользоваться. Он использует только инструменты, созданные природой. Для Момо переезд оказался сильнейшим стрессом. Видно, что он крайне осторожен и нервно кушает, оглядывая место куда он попал. Но с другой стороны, если бы Момо остался с своем доме, мы никогда бы не увидели замечательных пацанов Гентаро и Кинтаро! Даже у животных своя судьба у каждого!

      Kyoto City Zoo is doing a right thing by cutting down on veggies and fruits but giving their gorillas more grasses, leaves and twigs. Their digestive systems are more close to those of cows, so they shouldn't eat like human vegetarians do. You can read and see why Kyoto is doing what they are doing in articles online like "Something Mysterious is Killing Captive Gorillas."

      @WayneEskeddit Před rokem +1

      Actually he lived over 2 years without his mother at the zoo they were both at previously. He took it way easier than she did. They had been planning to move him for breeding for years. Biju died of regurgitation and reingest due to eating mostly only high water content foods and replacing that with more fiber will help stop this. Genki used to do it but they changed her diet. He did indeed suffocate to death. But this is such an industrial Inclosure and all the noises and ppl laughing at him it’s awful.
