    Excerpt from observation record
On October 18, 2010, Momotaro from the Ueno Zoological Gardens arrived at the zoo.
In preparation for the visit, we dispatched a keeper to the Ueno Zoo in advance to communicate with Momotaro in order to reduce stress after his arrival.
Also, prior to arrival, the corresponding staff members simulated the acceptance process.
Momotaro arrived at 4:40 pm. He was very excited in his cage, but after 5:00 p.m., we brought him inside without delay. In the beginning, he was a little restless and walked around in the room, and did not eat Chinese cabbage immediately even though we gave it to him, but he ate a tangerine and drank a sports drink. In addition, before he left, he had a scratch on his right shoulder, the nail on the second finger of his right hand came off, and during the move, he made a scratch above his right eye. After that, no abnormalities were observed, so the observation was terminated at 18:00.
On this day, I left the fluorescent light on during the night.

Now we know why Momotaro goes crazy whenever he sees the work crews pass by his enclosure. Because it's a reminder of the noisy men with the hard hats ⛑️ that transferred him to his new home and stressed him out with the loud talking, banging and lack of respect when they transferred him. They created a great deal of anxiety for him. I hope their procedures have gotten better through the years.

Yeah I thought the same thing. I've watched abt 20 vids with this animal. He doesnt respond as the other 3 do? I dont like zoo's & I dont like the enclosure they have them in....Seems cruel all the screaming kids & announcements & bells going off.............So much for the jungle filled with trees & birds etc.........

I really have the upmost respect for the Zookeeper's and the way they approach the whole situation. Momo was clearly scared and pissed off, but they handled it brilliantly. The man with the gun hid it behind his back , as I think to not display any sort of threat or extra anxiety for the beloved silverback. They all also stayed mostly out of the windows view, which maybe was to also let Momo assimilate and not have dear or angst against the Human helpers.
What a Fantastic Video! Too all of the workers at the Kyoto City Zoo, thank you for your precise yet gentle work transporting the Big Boy! I have so much appreciation and respect for the work and care you put into your very important jobs!💕🦍🌏💕

It actually took me a while to figure out what all the banging and noise was, it was Momotaro, ive never seen him truly mad and aggressive, he is such a chilled, laid back dude now that i didnt immediately realise what was going on.
While i understand the reasons for moving Momotaro, he most certainly deserved the chance to be "THE" silverback and have a family of his own its still distressing to see him so distressed.
I am glad he stayed in Country, to have to have added a long flight and even more driving time whilst in that cage could have had some lasting affects on Momotaro, but to look at him now 12yrs on, a life partner, 2 healthy and happy sons and keepers who truly love them makes this trip he had to go through bearable.

See how Momotaro got to the Zoo ... and see how many men it took to bring a single gorilla to the Zoo ... but it was worth it ... we can realize the strength of a single gorilla, I adore Momotaro and I see this video every day just to observe the behavior of the whole family (Genski, Gentaro and Gintaro) .... what beautiful gorillas !! This was amazing and exciting to watch and I can see why it would call for a lot of staff around to assist with the smooth transition. I do however, think that it may have helped if everyone was more quiet. It was distracting for me just listening through the video I can only imagine how agitated it made Momotaro who was in a small cage after a ride and not knowing what’s happening and who was around him. I hope 11 years later the staff considers keeping the talking to a minimum and only those who need to give instruction. It might help them to at least not be afraid from all the noise on top of everything else that has to take place.

I love his keeper travels with him. This must be very traumatizing for a young Male. Knowing from here he went on to have his wife Genki w/two amazing sons Gentaro & Kintaro makes it so much easier to watch. I feel so bad for the Gorillas kept in zoos alone in solitude as they are not supposed to be so all the time, expenses, planning, collaborating to ensure a young male gets a family must continue. There are some Silverbacks stuck in zoos with other males having no wives,no offspring which defeats the entire purpose of them being in zoos in the first place. There should be some kind of major monitoring with some kind of system so all Gorillas have the best enclosures. It's BS & infuriating those who are in small, dull, boring, concrete lonely enclosures. Thank you to all zoos who really do love & care for this majestic creatures & go the extraile to make their existence in their zoo & happy healthy one. ♥️ The Momotaro Family & Kyoto Zoo.

In the wild, when a young silverback has to leave his family, they create bachelor groups themselves until they find a female willing to go with them from another troop. I agree it is upsetting, but there are approximately 1,050 western lowland gorillas left in the wild in Africa. Those numbers are so tragically low because of poaching for bush meat and for taking a silverbacks head and hands for “folk medicine.” Horrifying!
