That's literally their plan. And it's working. Now, people only go to the actual theaters when it's a huge blockbuster tentpole kind of movie. Personally, I love going to the actual movies so hopefully the chains and the studios figure it out, but Netflix is throwing 17 BILLION dollars into their content next year so they'll have their fight cut out for them.

It's a good and decent flick if the title of the movie wasn't Spenser. But as a Spenser fan, I was disappointed. And I can understand why the critics are panning it. I know many of the people who saw this and thought it was good are from the younger generation and haven't read the books or watched the 80s TV series so they don't get the nostalgia attached to the title. But to put it into perspective, imagine some Hollywood bigwigs announced they are making a movie reboot of a well loved character like Capt. James Kirk, but instead of being a Starship Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, in this reboot movie he is a convicted smuggler instead and who as a criminal, is disqualified from ever becoming a starfleet officer. Then imagine having an iconic supporting character like Spock and then retcon his character from an intelligent, cool, logical and brilliant first officer into a rowdy, hotheaded, foul mouthed mercenary who smashes things to solve problems and you get why a lot of Spenser and Hawk fans are let down. I was especially disappointed with how they depicted Hawk in this, he was my favorite character. In the series, he was more intelligent, sophisticated and badass than Spenser himself and he often acted more like Spenser's big brother who trained and looked after his little brother rather than the other way around like depicted in this version. Why bother using the Spenser name unless you wanted to fool Spenser fans into watching a movie that had nothing to do with the books or the series. Like I said, the movie is not bad as action comedy movies go. But as a movie based on the Spenser books or series, it is awful.

It's a fun watch. Don't expect to get some deep profound experience, but it's a good time. Great cast with plenty of funny thrown in, and lots of action.

Avery is a hard act to follow. I haven't been happy with any of the actors they replaced him with after the show went off the air. Ditto for Robert Urich.

Spenser is a reader who quotes literature and historical figures. In my mind, Robert Urich and Avery Brooks still the best Spenser and Hawk. I can't imagine Robert B. Parker would be too thrilled with Peter Berg's interpretation. I don't think I will, either.
If "Marky Mark" was a character in the Spencer novels, Spencer would kick his ass. I heard about this series development last year. The Parker estate gave the 'ok' as Wahlberg in the lead. I was shocked, to say the least. I had thought the showrunners would cast an older actor to play this role. Not to mention one who wasn't convicted of racially instigated violence, repeatedly! It's rather strange that a new novel was released this year. The 'real' Spencer along with Chollo and Z for this installment. I don't know but I think there will be a huge backlash regarding this take on the "Marky Mark Spencer".
