This is a great family channel. I watched it with my preschooler and my middle schooler all the time. We love how educational it is and we think that it should be taught more at school

@@williamliu6648 different parts of the body do you have a different amount of pain sensitivity but it’s usually not by much
For the most part, acids tend to hurt more, but do less damage, where bases don't really hurt that much, but can be extremely devastating due to many of them reacting with water, oil and fat, creating exothermic heat on and IN your body...
So acids tend to do a lot of immediate damage, but will slowly get neutralized by the water in your body, so it doesn't tend to "travel" outside of where it hits the skin. Bases can really permeate through the skin, and destroy a much larger area than was immediatly hit by it.
I once spilled a single drop of concentrated sodium hydroxide solution on my thumb, and it didn't really hurt, but after a few minutes of wiping it off with a cloth, it left a gray spot behind, which later turned into just a hole in my thumb, nearly through to the bone...
Ugh, I got a concentrated sodium hydroxide solution on my hands once and immediately washed it off, some had gotten under my wedding ring and ate that band of skin on my finger. Still makes me shudder. I work with strong acids daily, mostly concentrated sulfuric acid and fuming nitric acid. I’ve gotten them on my skin numerous times and I’m WAY more afraid of strong bases. You’ve got time to wash acids off once you start feeling them before they do any real damage, but with strong bases once you feel it, it’s already destroyed some of your skin.
That would explain why the one with the baking soda on it was so bad
I once failed mixing NaOH with water so it splashed a drop right next to me eye, very close to my nose bone. That thin skin was in direct pain, but luckily i was right next to the sink and washed my eye instantly. But, that burning pain went on for some hours. Luckily there was no other harm than the pain. Its such a nasty chemical 😅

@@carlcarlandcarl It was only really painful with direct contact, like if i brushed it up against something.
I didn't feel much when it happened, and even when i did end up feeling it eventually after a few minutes, it was only a sort of "fuzzy" pain, like it was a bad sunburn or if you quickly rake your nail over your skin.
Healing was about 2 weeks i think... Slightly longer than i expected, but as far as i can tell now, knowing more about how it works, it could honestly have been a lot worse, as these things can cause permanent deformities in the deep tissue.
So in a way it's kind of a "would you rather?" sort of thing with bases and acids: Do you want the instant and searing pain of acid, but it lasts a shorter time and does less damage outside the affected area? Or do you want something that doesn't hurt nearly as much, but can do a lot of lasting damage if you are unlucky...

Vinegar is such a versatile liquid! You can cook and clean with it.
Its also an acetone that eats rust, I did an experiment in school and i was able to use pliers that were rusted shut for 20 years, took about a week submerged in a contanier of vinegar.

I worked in a machine shop years ago. We never had isopropyl alcohol or peroxide for disinfecting cuts, but we had an ample supply of acetone for cleaning parts. Those were fun times.
8:20 it does take a couple seconds for pain to kick in i use sanatizer at school for any cuts or anything so they are disinfectd
I dont think ive ever felt bad for Houston when hes injured. However, with Mark i genuinely feel for the guy. This year is going to be a great journey

What happened with the vinegar is the high difference in PH gives yoy a very strong "burn" reaction because hydrogen atoms will be exchanged so that you get a PH that is somewhat in the middle. (It depends on the amount of each reactif of course)

I use Alum to treat many of my cuts or areas I know might be at higher risk for infection like a toe nail that I cut into the quick so I would pack it with alum.

Like 2 years ago, i actually did the hand sanitizer one on my knees, i had burn them by sliding on dirt while doing sport at school. My friend told me she had antiseptic while really it was just hand sanitizer, at first it's all right and then it burn so much TT
