I spent around 15 hours with Ubisoft's XDefiant. I wasn't expecting much, but you know what? This is alright.

There is no "netcode".
Shill
I can say this isn’t a call of duty killer but it could be a overwatch killer but not a tf2 killer
This game is open world game can you walk around and kill enemy 😊😊😎😎
I’m genuinely surprised by how much I enjoy this game. I just hope they don’t shut it down a year after launch, because it has a lot of potential.
nah I don't think they will, game will probably have large player base since arcade cod like fps is dry now and this is breath of fresh air that was desperately needed in a space of all br games that are plaguing gaming scene
They will. That's the main reason so many people don't even want to play this game to start with. Because it's fucking Ubisoft. Having Ubisoft tied to this project is it's biggest flaw.
If you keep playing, they'll keep developing it.
@@CrustedPork you say that but The division 2, For Honor, Rainbow six siege, steep and division 1 still have servers up even though the player count is low. Some of them like TD2, For Honor, R6S still get content updates too.
Same. I fucking hate anything Ubisoft made in last 5 years and I love XDefiant. If game will have even small but stable community they will support it just look at their other games like Division 2,Siege or especially For Honor thats over 6 years old and they still plan to support it content wise. They also were fixing and updating Ghost Recon Breakpoint for like 3 years despite game not meeting their expectations sales and reception wise. If theres one and only good thing about Ubisoft nowadays then its definetly post launch content support for their titles.
Its honestly pretty smart and awesome to have other older games integrated to this
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that Shillup has his user name in XDefiant as CEOAndrewWilson. *Chefs Kiss*
I think that's been his Steam name for years lol
@@gamerinatrance3618 thats amazing. I had no idea lol.
Just wanted to point out how underappreciated Austin’s editing skills are. Keep up the good work guys. Love the Channel.
It's mostly just him talking over gameplay It doesn't take much skill. Not hating either
@@jameshowlett2821 To edit multiple 20 min plus videos week by week to hit deadlines at this quality? If you don't edit then you won't notice the subtleties that go in to this sort of thing nor appreciate the time it takes, but you'd definitely notice them if they were gone.

Well out of all the news we got lately, i didn't expect this. For XDefiant to actually be decent, that's really surprising
Ubisoft have to make a hit though…
yea, hearing how the receptions were saying how deceiving the trailer is.
@@CP077 i played the first playtest and it was horrible those days. One reason i am currently having a blast with the game is because they have turned it around by listening to the community. Although there are issues there but I'm still having fun.
Lol yeah, from Ubisoft of all people. xD
I refuse to play Ubisoft games they’re so god awful.. the definition of how to make a mediocre game
I think the thing I'm most excited for are the maps. Having the ability to pull from literally anything ubisoft is really exciting and I'm mainly hyped for some of the siege maps to make their way in to the game.
I've been playing the beta a lot and I haven't even played all the maps yet but I've enjoyed every single map so far. Whoever designed them needs a raise because there's so much cover, verticality, short cuts and angles that every fight feels interesting. Also 14 maps in a beta is unheard of, most games don't even launch with 10 maps lol
@@TrizollinTehWorld Zoomers have it so bad bro, back in the game games used to drop with all of the content at launch, so having a small selection of maps would have murdered the games outright. Glad we've gone back in this direction
the president plane from R6 is also in the game
@@CPtracker080 I thought that was the division 2 map.
I hope they add Ash and make her hit box broken again
Doesn't matter the topic of the video, Ralph always finds a way to include Destiny
this was the best comment
Destiny can teach others a lot - of what NOT to do.
@@CalixtoErico almost 3k hrs on D2, and I agree

To be fair, Destiny has to have some of the worst stat descriptions in gaming
Props to the devs for already releasing a net code fix.
Glad to hear you liked the maps, it's something I'm very proud of my team for. Especially given you didn't like the last game I worked on (Deathloop) 😅

This literally looks like old Cod and I'm actually happy to see it
As a long-time Division player, seeing TD's version of New York in first person is wild.
This honestly looks really impressive. It's not particularly my style (I'm not much into PVP anymore,) but they're obviously leveraging their universes in an interesting way here.
Are Assassins and Templars inevitable?
An Abstergo map would really work. Imagine the Black Flag scenario but adapted for XDefiant it would be really cool
I’ve been playing it a lot since I got into the beta a few days ago. It’s really fun and hopefully it can be like r6 instead of hyperscape with it’s support which I think with all the positive publicity they are getting they will support it for a good while. Fingers crossed it may come out like the next valorant.
No please don’t make it like R6. Nobody wants corner camping all game
@@Ziggyvu He was obviously referring to the length of it's support (9+ yrs).
ultimately it will come down to the finer points like netcode and balance. competing with CoD's gameplay style would seem like suicide but there's a proven audience for that, whereas hyperscape was already fighting an uphill battle by being an extremely fast old school arena shooter with crazy movement and time to kill
@@Ziggyvu sorry I meant in terms of r6 having years of support, a healthy competitive scene and a large player base.
This genre of game will never compare to Valorant or CSGO. Those games have numbers that are astronomical in comparison to these games lmao. Even COD only has 80k on Steam. That's nothing. This type of FPS game (Very arcady/casual) isn't that popular in comparison to BR or tactical 5v5. So it'll never have Valorant numbers or even remotely close. It'll never be a massive esport, and I can bet my left nut it'll be pulled within 1-2 years. It's a great game, but they'd have to pull ALL of COD's player base to even have a chance. CODs playerbase IS NOT even that high...So if they want a actual successful game they'd need to pull more players then that at bare minimum. And not just at launch, they need that many players 1-2 years AFTER LAUNCH.
And even in terms of how they play, they aren't even remotely the same. Except that you have abilities. Other than that they don't really have ANY cross-over with each other. Very different games.
As a COD veteran who's grown tired of the franchise, it's nice to see some new blood in the genre. Feel like we don't get too many arcade arena shooters any more.
its nice to see new blood yes. but this new blood does not seem great enough to pull a large enough playerbase to keep the game running. maybe im wrong but hero shooters like this tend to become super unbalanced in the long run. just look at overwatch, they had to recreate the entire game because the devs literally could not make a balanced game anymore because they had to keep releasing heroes to keep the game fresh.
@@kregman6928 yea the game is extremely unbalanced already, just need 2 builds to emerge on top by youtube videos, and the game will be ruined.
@@kregman6928 Team Fortress 2 and Apex Legends are still going strong after years.
Splatoon 3 is the best shooter available currently. It might sound odd but it really is.
New blood? This game feels like a re-skinned BO4.
Reminds me of Dirty Bomb with the classes, gunplay, and objective based game modes.
Shit, I remember Dirty Bomb! Been playing Shatterline on PC and that game gives me the same vibe.
Miss that game 😢
Rip Dirty Bomb.
Man this game has a lot of potential to be Ubi's next big thing. I hope the iron out the details and hit it big, because I am for sure looking forward to this.
You can rest assured with the amount of money on the line they will be releasing their best possible game.
@@kylerobinson6102 eh idk looking at ubisoft’s track record, it isn’t good but at least this looks promising and there’s some sort of effort put into it
@@kylerobinson6102 you made a decent point and then immediately made yourself look stupid by bringing up a completely unrelated non-issue like its an annoyance we can all relate to.
Huge agree, there have been numerous closed invite betas for various parts of the game before this and the feedback loop has been transparent and awesome. Looking forward to its release.
This looks interesting. Gonna keep an eye on it.
It'd be cool to get some Assassin's Creed inspired stuff, like a map set on a tropical island with a shipwreck or Abstergo headquarters.
That "Rule 34 slip", gave me a giggle there for a sec. Love it Ralph. Great review, and video as always. Adding this to all your videos on my playlist, as I love revisiting all your videos while playing games, working, basically anything that gives me a chance to just chill with your take on what these games are bringing to the table. Looking forward to the next video.
The fact that the maps are nods to other Ubisoft games made it enough for me to give this a shot when it launches. Competition in this space only makes it better for players.
Wow, that shooting looks pretty satisfying just from your footage. It's been quite a while since I did any online PvP shooting, and this is getting me back in that mood. It seems a little more Overwatch than I'm in the mood for, but closer to what I remember than anything else.
I'll absolutely try The Finals as well, also based on your recommendation
The finals definitely gonna be the best pvp fps of the year
It unfortunately isn't
Devs are handling this game in a respectable way, communication, and treating the beta as a tool to make the game better and not a just a demo to sell presales. I don't think a lot of teams realize how far that goes in todays gaming community. The biggest drawl for me is no SBMM in casual. So many people have been begging for this in so many games. I don't know a single other modern PvP doing this, and its truly a god send.
I treat betas as tools too
Wait why wouldn’t you want SBMM? Wouldn’t you WANT to be matched up against people on your level? Why would someone not want SBMM, unless they’re really good and just wanna destroy noobs?
(I’m genuinely asking)
What is the point of skill based match making in casual the whole point is to have fun
@@MisterK-YT well that the how it’s supposed to work but in practice it becomes a sweat fest because the game puts you have against people in your skill level or higher causing matches to feel more sweaty and if you do good the system will put you against higher skill bracket. Some games are awful in trying to match a higher skill player and lower skill player if you try to play together. So if your friend is above average while your average or below good luck having a fair game.
@@recruit8921 If you think about this for a one second, this doesn't make sense. How can a game keep putting you up against players of a higher skill bracket? Some one has to be the lower skill bracket.
Yessss!! I was just wondering where your reaction was to this on the weekly vid, loving this game as well!!
Ranked Mode will be in the beta this weekend. Was confirmed before the beta launch. Regarding the netcode, this was also announced by the devs that a new netcode is ready but wasn't for the beta.
Ranked with shitty netcode is one hell of a bold decision...
@@AnimosityIncarnate yeah but it is a beta so don't take it too serious regarding your rank. It is meant to test the MMR system for Ranked.
I didn’t expect to hear Xdefiant to be actually good, I guess I’ll have to check it out when it drops in full whenever that is
I love the communication by Mark Rubin regarding the game.
Thanks for talking about this game! Definitely on my radar now that the rebranding and gameplay looks a lot better.
Man, it's a trip to see Attica Heights. Old Phantoms map. Never thought I'd see this map again.
Throwback.
Always had been looking forward to this game since the moment it was announced! If anything, I felt that it was a shame that they had to drop the more "hyper"/"not serious" branding. I can definitely see this filling up the Dirty Bomb hole in my mind
Thank you for always bringing the highlight of the week.
first time seeing this shit
I know this video was made prior to the announcement but they actually announced a ranked alpha that should be coming out sometime today 4/20 which is honestly really cool imo
Found out about this last night, just when I wanted to know more, here you are. Ralph your timing is impeccable
I am actually really excited for this one. Never thought that would happen for a ubisoft game.
the lack of named heros is kinda a breath of fresh air since absolutely everyone is doing it these days. i hope that we can have more character customization in the future like in the division, making your own splinter cell character or ghost with some more variety in kits would be fun
It's such a blast, I'm glad Splinter Cell was heavily included as that hopefully means they're heavily dedicated to it's future post-remake.
Also super sick that the inside of the downed plane is basically the map from Siege, just smaller.
I would also say I would hope they could flesh out the netcode a little more. Seems like a pretty large peakers advantage along with some wonky hit detection.
Ubisoft never learn, Ubisoft still not adding their newest games on Steam!
Good
Make a mod for that bish
I don’t mind the more faction based approach to the characters actually. Like, there are already hero shooters who do this, and usually idgaf whether my operator has a tragic backstory or is in love with another operator. Faction based abilities is cool too. you’re part of a team, and you feel it in the gameplay.
I agree. I actually prefer being a nameless and faceless soldier instead of some cringey annoying caricature who's quippy and Unique™. That's what it was like in the older CODs and older shooters in general, and we were better off for it.
i'm sure ubisoft will add a 30 dollar sam fisher skin so people can play it as a "hero" shooter anyway
the devs have come out and stated that the net code has already been fixed in the final version. it is just not in the version we are playing. ImMarksman talked about it in his stream the other day. Love your review. really well made!
Love that your Ubisoft name is CEOAndrewWilson, that got a chuckle outta me
I can't wait to play this game, feels like the Spiritual Successor to Black Ops 3 we were always looking for.
It does
As sure as the days are long, Ubisoft management will scuff up whatever potential XDefiant has.
It definitely gives me vibes of CoD from back in college. We used to have dorm tournaments with CoD4 and Modern Warfare 2. Man, GOOD times. That's legitimately the last time I played any CoD multiplayer.
I’ve been waiting SOOOO LONG for Brink 2 so happy it’s getting good impressions
Been playing the closed beta for the last few days. Honestly cannot express just how incredible this game feels to play. I keep describing it to people as Black Ops 2 with Valorant specialists. I think its genuinely brilliant and besides the dodgy hit registration I will definitely be playing this for a long time to come once its released.
Black ops 2???? I’m sold
More like black ops 4 than black ops 2. Or just feels like Ghost.
@@natecoet3291 i'd personally disagree. the movement speed especially is a lot faster than bo4 and the gun feel isnt as stiff as bo4. only comparison i'd make to bo4 is the specialists being similar but yh personally game feel just feels identical to old school bo2
The specialists were the worst part of the last golden age cod game besides loot boxes, Black Ops 3. There's nothing that feels worse then absolutely dominating a lobby only to die to a guy that got a 1 kill weapon that takes no skill to use...
I think I might check this out. I don't play COD anymore, but I do find myself missing that type of game from time to time. This sounds perfect for me. Plus it's free to play!
I'm in the same boat. I played CoD a lot back in the day, but haven't had a way to play that kind of game because I don't like the direction the new CoDs have gone. I got a beta key the other day and it's been really fun to play a good twitch shooter that's not a battle royale.
I'm happy to see this is shaping up. It's weird to think that if this takes off, people might actually want them to revisit GR: Frontlines, or something similar under a new IP name to compete with WZ.
I'm so glad to see your video in 4K60, much needed upgrade!
Man hyperscape had a great foudation. But ubisoft had to launched it in a bleeding state until it died.
I think ubisoft might end up selling the major characters from their games as micro transactions, like you can Sam Fisher as a spliter cell Operator or Dani Rojas as a Libertad Operator. Havent heard much about how the game will be monetized and after Breakpoint and the recent AC games im skeptical.
Yeah i find it ignorant to not assume Ubi will be selling their IP hard. Maybe the Battle Pass will offer unique Ubi IP but I guarantee you'll be paying through the nose to shoot someone as Sam Fisher with his actual Five Seven.
It's almost like you're familiar with Ubisoft or something.
To be fair, CoD still sells "Classic Ghost" to people year after year. At least they do it in a contextually sensible manner, I s'pose.
Got to play a bunch of this over a chunk of the early alphas before the rebrand. This game is night and day compared to back then in terms of game feel, the feed back in the forums was all pretty unanimous and pretty much shaped this into what it is now.
I'm hyped for this.
Wasn't at first, as you said, the initial branding was a slap in the face.
But seeing these betas impresses me. It looks like a pvp shooter I can finally dig into, having not been able to stay in once since CoD Ghosts a decade ago.
When this was announced it went in one ear and out the other. Now I'm hyped for it after seeing all the great feedback and I'm an old school cod player who has quit the game the past few years. I hope this game can gather a strong community so ubisoft keeps supporting it. I do think it will, out of the blue this game has gotten some great buzz and people are seemingly excited for it
If the install size is reasonable that alone will make the case for me to keep this installed to play with friends instead of COD
It's insane that this even needs to be a consideration. Sony and Microsoft need to force developers to add the option to download 4K textures and secondary languages for certification to get this under control. Apple already does this if you want to be able to download from the app store off of mobile data.
it's 58.4GB on PC
@@gna2724 meaning, you’d be able to download the game with 1080p textures instead, and without any of the secondary language packs??
@@MisterK-YT Yeah. There should be a mandated options menu for all games exceeding 50 GB (to avoid hurting indies) where you can remove/install unneeded/wanted foreign language audio and 4k Textures.
Also now that we are on next gen exclusive titles, asset duplication and uncompressed audio need to be things of the past, as those were limitations of HDDs and weak CPUs respectively.
Solid experience thus far. I agree that the Net code definitely needs work. I get shot around corners and feel like enemy in game models are slightly behind where they actually are in space. Leading to a lot of deaths around corners as my opponent sees me before they appear on my screen.
I saw the devs tweet about this they have a fix for this but couldn’t get it in for the beta will be better on release
I really love that they even put in some maps from ghost recon phantoms
I actually really like the look of the gunplay and map design, reminds me a lot of Black Ops 2.
Black Ops 2 was military. This thing looks like Overwatch-all cartooney and unrealistic.
Honestly looks like a semi competent CoD rival, similar to what Battlefield used to be, and I think that's great.
Ah yes... Back when battlefield had 3 lane maps 🤦
what makes it "semi" competent though?
Are the songs played troughout the video directly pulled from the game ? If yes, then I'm enjoying what I'm hearing.
Never gotten into a tom clancy game other than the division for a bit but i remember absolutely loving how the guns felt and hating the way PVP felt because of the net code. This looks similar
The Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six games were great back in the day 10-20 years ago when they had proper online PvP.
What I like about this community is that we are all here because we want to play good games no matter who is making them or what they are about. It’s just refreshing to be feeling positive about a Ubisoft title
A lot of ex-CoD people work on XDefiant, which explains why the gameplay loop is so good.
Oh dayum, if that activision deal goes through and playesrs migrate thats 10 million off the evaluation 😂😂😂 hope this does well
That explains nothing. People from the original left for dead worked on back 4 blood and that game was utter trash. Just because they have ex-cod devs doesn't mean they got the GOOD ex-cod devs. They could've picked up the scraps and trash devs.
@@CrustedPorkot devs, actual ex-pro cod players from the modern warfare/black ops days. People who know what a good FPS feels and plays like.
The only issue I have with map voting is usually the majority want the same fkn map over and over that is easiest to grind but is often the least favorite to play. I like variety and map voting often causes same map
This looks like the game I personally would have like to have seen CoD turn into before I stopped playing about 8/9 years ago - more focus on objectives, slightly higher time to kill, clarity of visuals and map design without becoming bland or boring. I'll certainly give it a go as it's free to play!
I've been playing FPS games for awhile and I did notice that the lack of any SBMM meant that most matches were often very one sided. If I went super sweaty and used the best character and loadout then I could very easily win pretty much every match. Many casual players just felt like bots to farm and the only opposition was the one or two good players randomly on the other team. Top players would end the game with 30+ kills while everyone else just got farmed like bots. I fear like many people who are used to SBMM are going to get farmed for 10 games in a row and stop playing.
SBMM is the worst thing to happen to competitive shooters in years (ever maybe). Completely discourages people from trying to improve at a game, and makes every match feel like a random crapshoot depending on what the algorithm feels like you deserve.
@@coldblowcode That doesn't make any sense. Why would matching people based on skill cause more problems than throwing noobs to the sharks every match?
@@arthurdent9281 watch the vid Skill up explains what sbmm has done to shooters like cod or destiny. Makes perfect sense.
@@HappyRagingMatt Yeah, he said it's too hard. He wants to play on easy mode and kill a bunch of noobs.
Yeah even as a viewer I just can't help but smile when watching this game it reminds me of what fun arcade shooters were and also reminds me how far we drifted away from what made the formula great. Looking forward for an actual fast paced fun shooter for once.
Not expecting it, but I hope Ubisoft sees the reception to how this game is handled and make it a precedent to hold themselves to
There's clearly talent in all of the studios' devs, all they need is the right direction and focus
Im really hyped to play this on release, ready to go back to fast paced action, im glad kill streaks aren’t in it, defeats camping purpose and not having to be stopped in your tracks cause a damn chopper gunner or something is out , can always be in the fight, and also the sbmm not being in casual mode, as someone who mains pistols as a primary, it’ll be nice to not constantly be meta’d from everyone using assault rifles and sweating cause everyone assumes every match is a damn cdl tournament can actually go against regular people as well
The Current FPS Industry is so bad
that some midtier ubisoft shotter is getting insane hype
its actually sad
I love how every criticism of a SBMM also exists when you don’t have SBMM, it just switches who has to deal with the problem. I say stick the sweats with the sweats. People who suck wanna have fun in casual too, and that’s hard to do when when there’s two guys on the other team going 40-0 because there’s no reason whatsoever for you be matched against them other than the fact that they like dropping in to ruin your games.
That makes sense to me. I don’t play any multiplayer shooters, but I always hear people complain about SBMM n I’m like “wouldn’t u WANT to be matched up against players of similar skill? And if not, is that just cuz ur really good n wanna feel cool by destroying noobs?”
Cuz I’m out of this sphere, I’ve never known people’s reasons for hating on SBMM, just knew that they hate it.
@@MisterK-YT the ONLY people who complain are people who are really good and now have to play with people at their level instead of rolling most of their games. They don’t want “casual” games, they want to specifically be matched up with players more casual than them so they run up the board.
@@xIQ188x This pretty much. These people are tools, and they wonder why this results in toxic communities and dying playerbases. Casuals aren't gonna stick around if they get destroyed 8 matches out of 10, whatever the gamemode. Destiny is especially known for this issue. PvP players there are some mad apes.
really hope this takes off, the game looks amazing in like every technical way
Just started watching, hoping you cover the hero system because I really am not a fan of ability type shooters.
Oh god the kill feed loads backwards and I can't stop looking at it.
I really think if they can hold off on anti consumer decisions for at least half a year, this game can be big and steal the audience from cod. Activision seems to be actively trying to make their game worse recently.
They gotta hold off for the entire life cycle of the game.
@@majormom357 yeah but that literally will not happen. Half a year is prob still pushing it for these greedy rats.
True, but more than likely it'll be ruined by microtransactions on launch day, never recover, and die a premature death. Which is a shame cause it looks great and I'd be more than willing to pay full price for it as long as it doesn't have ANY microtransactions.
I really like this game. I was a big CoD fan for the games before CoD Ghost, and quickly stopped playing by the time BO3 was out. I've been playing various FPS games since then, but never had a good CoD replacement. This game does a great job at copying good ideas from other games, while innovating and introducing fresh gameplay in more subtle ways. The movement feels really fun and fluid and the abilities give the game some variety and possible skill gap that's more than just aim. I also really appreciate them not making this a battle royale, that's a really hard space to break into and succeed while objective based fast paced shooters don't really have any big competition right now beyond CoD and Overwatch 2. The game ran really well and I didn't have any noticeable bugs except a bit of weird netcode stuff for high ping players. Ubisoft devs know how to program a working sound engine *cough* Apex Legends *cough* and the visuals aren't completely cluttered with dust and UI. Definitely try the game if you like games like Overwatch, Apex, or CoD and want something fresh and well made.
I remember playing the closed beta and it was pretty good, I'm excited for it!
20:35 I saw the mag float in air before being pushed in and that’s the first bug I’ve seen :o

Still doesn't look good
The crashed 747 is a Division 2 map from Heartland
Something i love so fsr about the game is the maps. They are so beautiful and theres so much to look at i cant wait to start playing!!
Lol give it time my friend, im sure the industry will find a way to ruin if
4:57 The Nameplate pops up before you even see if theres an Enemie
Having a blast with it myself, want it to succeed so thanks for sharing.
Wish I could have gotten into the beta but I’m looking forward to trying this out on release.
I hope over time with iterations and maybe some crazy 5 hour single player campaign added, this eventually takes over the COD market
I love that they use Division sounds for kills et cetera
First person I've ever heard mention "Roller Champions". That's a great one that barely was marketed.
14:18 I see what you did there, CEOAndrewWilson
I wish they implemented learning, given how siege gunplay is so satisfying because of that mechanic.
Very cool looking game, the map design looks really solid! I’m not typically a COD player but I’d check this out so long as the agents aren’t too annoying. I’m surprised that it sounds like there’s no S&D mode? As a val player, and seeing the success of stuff like R6, I’m surprised S&D wouldn’t be a mode out the gate, I know old COD games did have it, tho not sure if it’s something anyone plays. The payload mode seems like probably the best balance for people who want to use all the weapons and run around for the fast paced COD-style gameplay.
I played the beta today from 2:30PM to 10PM. It’s so damn fun. MWII beta I only played for 1 hour and it wasn’t fun. This feels like old cod and a fun classic arcade shooter
I forgot about that original marketing until you brought it up.
