- Both Gates of Hell Ostfront and Men of War Assault Squad 2 are heavy weights of the WW2 RTS genre. But can Ostfront really compete with our beloved Men of War Assault Squad 2? In this video the two games take to the ring and go head to head to decide which is the ultimate WW2 champion!
Just to clarify, since this video was published you no longer need to purchase the original Call to Arms to be able to play Gates of Hell Ostfront. Woo!

Both of these games are titans of the genre, but can Ostfront really dethrone Men of War Assault Squad 2, a game that's brought us so many hours of pure joy?
I love both, and Men of War 2 is on the way!... But what do you think?
my god what a disappointment men of war 2 turned out to be so far. I'm curious about what you think about the beta
@@aspicboat What I've played so far has been average at best but I'm trying to stay positive until we see the full game. Certainly looks like a step away from the realism of MoW and a step towards the arcade-y style of Company of Heroes.
Was there anything specific that has disappointed you?
@@twiglets2 Well I don't like the direction either, but it really looks like it's a bad rerelease of the original Men of War from 2009. The UI is terrible, I see the exact same animations, quirks, physics and voicelines that were present in earlier titles and MoWAS2 Plus I've read a comment somewhere that they just repurposed an earlier F2P project into MoW2, called Soldiers Arena. It honestly looks like they're trying to pull a fast one on people.
@@aspicboat Absolutely, I didn't try it but those who have tell me they basically copy & pasted that previous project into MoW2 as the multiplayer experience.
It would be very interesting to know the detail behind assets used from previous games. I hear these accusations often about MoW2 and previous iterations too, I wonder if the developers would have something to say about that!
Best rts game still IS Empire at War
I prefer the mechanics and added animations of GoH, and I feel that it's a good step for the genre. GoH just needs to get some of the amazing mods MoW2 has to be top. However, I don't know what they're doing with MoW2. From what I have seen and played, it's a complete downgrade and plays way more arcade-y.
@pepperpeppington6267 I find MoW2 a very interesting subject at the moment. It seems they are taking a step towards Company of Heroes with the arcade-y feel, though I believe they took steps recently to at least give you options to remove the "Pow!" "Wallop!" when your tank hits another.
Okay not Pow or Wallop but you know what I mean!
underoath
Still very true a year later
But... RobZ, the modder, is also the lead developer of Gates of Hell, working with a licensed version of the CtA engine. So really, he's made both games good.
That is also why you must buy CtA first, but GoH is it's own standalone game.
Any way, both AS2 and GoH are excellent games, and have different strenghts and weaknesses. GoH has better single player longevity, AS2 has great multiplayer, both have a gorillion mods.
MoW2 however, is extremely disappointing, and it won't be fixed before release.
@varyagace6194 I tried to incorporate the fact that RobZ is developing Ostfront too at the end of the video but I'm starting to think I was too subtle! I only found that out while making this video and thought it was rather cool.
Got a lot of love for both games, though I suppose Ostfront will continue to improve while AS2 is largely put out to pasture. I assume modders are turning to Ostfront fully now but perhaps I'm mistaken.
MoW2! Trying to stay positive but so far I see no reason to play it over Ostfront and I suspect you're right. When was the last time a game changed much between the disappointing previews and the actual release? I struggle to think of many recent examples!
Was there anything specific that disappointed you?
@@twiglets2 Oh I did catch the RobZ reference in the video, but it did seem to fly over other people's heads. Anyway, about MoW2... Oh man where do I start?
With the always online even in single player, effectively killing modding AND making sure the game has a definite expiration date... Or the fact the main multiplayer mode is just a retooling of their failed live service game, and structured like a copy of Steel Division 2 that plays like a mix of World of Tanks and League of Legends? The extremely limiting army deck system that ensures you won't have what you need in a given match, and are forced to watch as your teammates do nothing to help... Or the fact the UI is ugly and cluttered, hard to read and the controls are clunky, the unit AI is stupid (stupider than both other games) and pathing is terrible....
Really the only reason I don't have an even bigger list, is that I only managed to stomach playing it once per beta test period. I am sad at how this is looking, it's gonna make CoH3 look like a good launch.
@@varyagace It makes me sad because so many players have been looking forward to MoW2 for so long, and so many have the same view as you which must be such a disappointment.
I hadn't appreciated that the always online element would effectively kill modding. I don't know the technical side but that's a huge let down
@@varyagace You forgot to mention that , SirHinkel who made the SirHinkel missions for men of war as2 he also went onto work for Barbedwire Studios
you know... putting these games into a wrestling match as a comparison really helped me understand the differences better lol
@redfriends_gaming Glad to be of service!
That ending was way better than anything I could've hoped for. It was in my mind the whole time I watched this video, and even before you mentioned it I knew what you were going to say. Haha, amazing video!
@Soul5hadows7 Thanks my friend, glad you enjoyed it!
Just looked on the steam page and looks like you can now buy Ostfront separately. That alone pretty much sealed my purchase.
@ThunderRod Yes you can, a recent and very welcome change! Both games are great, but Ostfront is improving all the time and they've added the US forces with a DLC so good times to enjoy WW2 strategy games!
Gates of Hell Ostfront 🤝 MoW Assault Squad 2
Dunking on Men of War 2
@Underground3 Haha hell yes!
I feel like you've spoken more about the metaphorical wrestling match taking place than facts about these two games. Not a fan of that, but the video editing and sound are all very good.
Indeed! It was hard to keep track of exactly what each game had in its favour. Not a fan at all.
Yeah it was funny for the first 2 mins but after that it was like wtf
About 3 minutes of talking about the games, and 12 minutes of talking about wrestling metaphors. It was tough. And I love wrestling.
Haha that was a funny and entertaining 'showdown' review of both games. I realy enjoyed it. I happen to own both games indeed. Also play alot of CoH1 Blitzkrieg mod&Eastern Front mod, Age of Empires 3, and currently this past week I started playing C&C 3 Kane's Wrath again with the Tiberium Twilight mod. Good ol' times ^^
@shagbuilShane Kane's Wrath! Wow that takes me back, is it as good as you remember? I haven't tried it with any mods, that'll have to go on the list.
To be fair, the developers of Gates of Hell Ostfront were forced to make it a DLC for Call to Arms. Great informative and entertaining video. I have and love both games.
@tommymoore9443 Thank you! Why choose when you can have both? I guess as2 is fading into the sunset as modders move over to Ostfront (I might be wrong there) but both games are great fun! Have you tried any of the Ostfront dlc's?
@@twiglets2 I'm waiting for Liberation, and I'm going to purchase all of them.
the improved direct controls and the first person mode alone makes GoH an upgrade over mowas2 and we haven't even talked about the graphics, sounds and units. yes they are very similar, basically the same game, but GoH is a very solid overall improvement. I might even say it's the definitive version of men of war so far.
@aspicboat I think I agree with you. Though it's a shame GoH doesn't have more factions, it was very cool to play all five in MoWAS2.
Then again, it's onwards and upwards for GoH as content and improvements are constantly coming out!
First person mode is stupid and doesn't belong in WW2 Strategy games.
@@VisualdelightPro it's great when the AI or hte pathfinding gets a bit retarded. you can just press F and direct the unit as you want it to go or you can just start taking tricky shots the AI won't do. I think it adds a lot to the game.
@@twiglets2Well, GoH is about the Eastern Front because the theater was indeed the "gates of hell" so maybe they will add the minor Axis countries soon?.. Hungary, Romania, Finland, and maybe little Slovakia.
@@Enlisted_AxisMain That would be very interesting. I think most players would agree that too many WW2 games focus on the traditional factions, seeing the lesser talked about factions would be great to see.
First things first, I loved the video it was very well made!
Now onto my take on this. I’ve played Men of War and it’s many spin offs and sequels, early teenage years were spent getting angry at Faces of War for being for difficult. Men of War Assault Squad 2 was the piece de resistance in the series, I remember initially being concerned at the lack of a traditional campaign but ultimately I loved the way they did the missions, multiplayer was just as good as it had been before and ultimately when the mods released the game became my favourite RTS game of all time, Robz realism being one of those mods. Now as I write this comment they’ve announced the US are coming to Gates of Hell and they released and update that’s significantly improved the AI, they also had a sale where you could buy the whole Call to Arms package for about £10 which is crazy value. Which brings me to my next point, it’s integration with Call to Arms, Barbed Wire studios used to post game updates on their Facebook page early in development and at some point when they were nearing the end of development Best Way who created the GEM engine basically said that they were no longer allowed to release a standalone game using the GEM2 engine and they had internal discussions to either shift development to a different engine or find another way to licence it, that’s why it’s integrated with Call to Arms because Digitalmindsoft already had a licence and they came together to solve the issue. Also Robz is actually now a developer on Gates of Hell too which is why the mod is now rarely updated. Ultimately I think Gates of Hell is far superior in everything except the amount of factions it has but as we are seeing, this is changing. Men of War 2 on the other hand is just awful, the beta was just painful to play and it doesn’t respect it predecessors at all.
If you're gonna include robz you might wanna point out that RobZ is a developer on the team for Gates of Hell Ostfront which is mostly why it is the way it is
@theoneduckson2312 yes that's what I was getting at at the end, but it seemed more fun to suggest it rather than say it, for those who know :)
So ive played most of this franchise even the Vietnam one. I think AS2 was good but maps were kinda repetitive and you didn't get the same feeling every map and mission being a new challenge as you would from FOW or the original MOW. Hows the campaign? And hows the gem editor?
I thought the German Ostfront Veteranen was it's own faction in Men of war
Congratulations on one of the best and perhaps unique comparative game reviews I have ever watched! Very entertaining! Recently purchased Assault Squad 2 on Steam Winter Sale and just started to play it. Rather steep learning curve but enjoying, however I was wondering how it compared with Gates of Hell ... then found this video! Sounds like both games are worth owning as I am a bit of a WW 2 historian. Do wish Assault Squad 2 did a better job of providing a comprehensive beginner tutorial series rather than forcing a new player to watch endless YT videos to learn the game basics before you can understand how to play.. Interested to see how your subscribers (new sub myself) feel about these two games.
@barrysworld640 Thank you! Firstly, I have a quick start tutorial guide for Assault Squad 2 that you might find useful if you've not seen it already, hope it helps!
The evolving conversation in these comments regarding the two games has been verrrrry interesting. I would summarise it by saying that since this video was published Ostfront has gone from strength to strength with new content and improvements. Assault Squad 2 (as an older game) is what it is, amazing, but no longer moving forward.
Personally I love both!
I just like ostfront more because of dynamic campaign tbh.
I can only play so many Wigga campaigns nad multiplayer maps
Both have their strong suits! Assault Squad definitely shines at having a perfect blend of arcade style combat. What held it back was the engine and lack of innovation to keep up with the times. Gates of Hell surpasses AS2 good at realism, graphics, sound, and QOL features. Unfortunately, the modding is lacking but that is no fault of the devs. I was very hopeful to see MOW2 copy and paste AS2’s style of combat just with a better engine etc. but I was very disappointed. The dynamic campaign in GOH creates a lot of replay ability.
Unfortunately, BWS is a very small studio and needed the funding via DLC’s and not to mention they were forced to become a dlc of CTA after their original deal with Best Way fell a part.
Enough rambling lol! Amazing video from one content creator to another!
@PershingOfficial Thanks for taking the time to comment my friend, a shame about MoW2 so far but fingers crossed they can pull it back...!
Thanks for stopping by and I'm a big fan of your thumbnail game, very slick!
@@twiglets2 You no longer need to own call to arms to buy gates of hell , I never had that game. and just brought Gates of Hell osterfront with out any issue
@@michaelhawkins7389 Yes so I hear, a great bit of news!
Also have to consider the liberation DLC which adds 20+s maps and has continuous updates every month and week even the next content update contains us ships and other addition faction ships mostly small not too game changing but still good and has the new blow everything up feature this game also has ambient wildlife which spawns and acts naturally
@stormy1055 fingers crossed it's as good as the marketing makes out! Do we have a release date yet?
@@twiglets2if I had to guess I’m going to assume it’s coming out September-November of this year
Correction, September 20,2020 !!
Hi ! can you clarify how building demolition is locked behind a DLC? I want to make sure i have it lol
Wondering the same thing, did you find it out?
I just completed MoW2AS and currently playing the basic CtA.
I prefer the mechanic, gameplay and hotkeys of MoW2AS than CtA.
In MoW2AS, i can completely fix any broken abandoned vehicles especially armor vehicle. In CtA i havent able to stun then capture / steal armored vehicle.
In MoW2AS i able to lift and hide enemy dead bodies easily. I csnt do that in CtA.
No hotkey to craw/laydown troops in CtA.
In MoW2AS i can pick up any dropped weaponary, especially AT bazooka. In CtA sometimes the troops cant pick it.
In MoW2AS we can call any invantery/cavalery/altillery/support reinforcements when having sufficient "morale"
The CtA FPV just nice to have, since the main reason playing RTS, player is focusing on map view
@adipramono8349 that's a great summary for players who want to compare the games!
Gates of Hell is really the king of WW2 RTS games. It’s taken me well over 100 hours just to get the basic mechanics down. Unless you want to play Graviteam Tactics and spend 500 hours mastering the game GoH is the way to go.
@dongately2817 Funny you should mention Graviteam Tactics. I purchased recently in a sale and have since read how difficult it is to pick up the controls, apparently they are not user friendly in the slightest??!
@@twiglets2 yeah tgeyre not but its still very good wargame try out c9mbat mission
i just searched up Gravyteam Tactics, loading it up now ... thanks for the mention, didnty know it existed. hope its decent for $40.00 and 2016
Steel division has a big ass campaign check it out, hard to.beat and game.....
this was such a fun watch it must have taken a lot of time to make something so good
@zoningouterspace Thank you! Yes it did take a long time to make but I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I love Call to arms and Men of War, and I am thinking about buying GoH as well. They offer a gaming experience that can't be found anywhere else in the RTS genre. They aren't trying to imitate other games. They are out there creating and refining their own formula, which is something I respect.
I liked mowas2, but after playing goh for 600 hours It’s impossible for me to go back to mow
@@dreadedTanker3173same same same

I like this style of review. It is entertaining. Though I'm curious who the manager was
@ninochaosdrache3189 I'm glad it was entertaining!
The manager at the end of the video above the stadium?
You said in the video GOH destruction is locked behind a DLC. I just bought the game and have been thoroughly enjoying it. What is the destruction DLC called so I can unlock it?
@Sledgehammer1944 The upcoming Liberation DLC will be adding more building destruction. It's not out yet, and I don't know how much it will add, but I'm excited to see!
I guess I was future proofing the video by mentioning it before it even releases...!
@@twiglets2 Aha okay thanks bro
What is about combination GoH+valour (in comparison MoW:AS2 + Robz Realism)?
@DimNorman I didn't realise GoH has the valour mod, I thought that was AS2?
I guess it makes sense that MoWAS2 mods would transition over to Ostfront, GoH+valour must be awesome!
One think I think is missing from these games that would make it overwhelmingly superior than most is the ability to pause the game, give orders, and stack commands and orders similar to a waypoint system. Unpausing it would then execute those commands.
The only game I can think of that does this is the Combat Mission series.
Just an opinion, but I think if a system like this was implemented, along with solid a solid UI, would make these second to none.
@RM-cv4tl Agreed, that would enhance the game greatly!
I believe men of war as2 does have that ability. You can press the pause key to pause the game(I have an bigger keyboard that has that button as my original laptop didn’t). And you can press shift and left click to set waypoints that a unit will follow along. Not sure about ostfront but if it is a upgrade it should be there.
@@noobsworld4217 I’ll have to look into that. Don’t remember that being a mechanic but that doesn’t mean it’s not there.
@@noobsworld4217 I think you're right, I recall being able to speed up / slow down and possibly paus AS2.
Personally I think being able to pause is a useful feature, though it's personal preference
Thank you for your reviews. They are really useful. It's a shame AI is not great in these games, I'm looking for a game like this but with good AI. I own COH games but I want something less arcadey.
@luisromero6434 I'm glad you found them useful! It's difficult to find a game with decent ai in this genre. Unfortunately I would say that they're all equally bad!
However both of these games definitely tick the less arcadey box
@@twiglets2 would you recommend SD2 over these two? How good/bad is its AI? I think you didn't say much about it in your SD2 video.
@@luisromero6434 Hm, that's tough! The main criticism of the ai in SD2 is that it effectively cheats. It knows where your units are when they should be hidden by the fog of war etc etc. Other than that I would say the ai in SD2 is pretty decent compared to these two.
If you like the hardware of WW2 SD2 has so so so many detailed variants of vehicles and squads. If memory serves both Ostfront and SD2 have a dynamic campaign mode which adds a lot of depth.
@@twiglets2 thank you very much! I'll think about it.
Fantastic video! I got here because I just played GoH for the first time today and to my own surprise it was a little bit "meh". I just felt like the improvements over MoWAS 2 were a bit underwhelming considering the age difference. Who knows, maybe I'll warm up to it, I just hope that the content will expand in the near future because I absolutely love variety when it comes to factions and units.
Ostfront, but have played a alot of assult squad 2 before. one thing i miss is a multiplayer mode from a diffrent game i think was called "soldiers, Heroes of WW2" i think. it was called convoy, where one side had pretty much acces to everything, but had to escort trucks from base A to Base B. you had full controle. the other player had acces to all infantry and some ligth vheiclaes from there chosen faction, and had to stop that truck from reaching the position. it was a funny mode, expecelly when the gurrila figthers started to recover damage vheicles:)
@dalleravn that sounds awesome! I do think these kind of games need to mix up the gameplay, sounds like convoy was great fun!
regarding the AI - to be fair: the AI opponent is rather good and uses sophisticated tactics that are still used in modern military today. Just the player units suck at following commands in a reasonable way XD
Hahaha funny vid but informative love both games have subbed and pressed the bell hello from Scotland
@buchan448 Thank you! I see you have good taste in games, the next video is on Warno, not sure if that's one you're interested in though!
@@twiglets2 it is indeed was playing warno last night I'm really looking forward to Broken Arrow as well that looks amazing :)

@raidermaxx2324 Let us know what you think of it!
@@twiglets2 hmmm. so far it seems really heavy emphasis on being "on-line" .. you cannot play a campaign mission without waiting for a server to be online.. Seems kind of weird.. Graphics are alot better tho, thats for sure. Oh and they implemented that "command wheel" from that hard core battle simulation game Graviteam (that i also just bought and played for the first time today lol
@@raidermaxx2324 it's been a day of firsts!
As of November 28, you dont need to own the original CTA to play ostfront now right?
@MrNerdie you might be right! I don't see any mention of needing CTA on steam anymore
Bro should have been a commentator
@tariqziad8959 Hell yeah!
Ostfront, especially after all the dlcs are added to both games, I think is bigger, has more content, in particular content that is tailored to single player. Assault Squad 2 I feel is much more optimized, there are times where ostfront noticeably lags, but I’ve never seen assault squad or MoW do that. (for the record I haven’t played multiplayer on either so I have no frame of reference for multiplayer lag)
@ls93780 it's good to see an objective opinion, most are very one sided
I really am more into Ostfront because the graphics ans the gameplay just give me the feeling of the mighty and cold ostfront while MoW2 doesnt give me that feeling
CTA Gates of Hell recently added the US Faction as good DLC and the game is getting much better through the years i believe, now, maybe they want to brought us the British Faction some day or not.
@MrUnknown-hp1rk Yes I think it's safe to say Gates of Hell Ostfront is going from strength to strength with each update.
If only the brought us a British faction!
@@twiglets2It's got to be next! Hell Let Loose already did. Can't have Normandy without Britain and maybe even a bonus Canadian side mission!
@@rexman971 We can only hope!
Gates Of Hell Ostfront s going to be having a major update adding an usa dlc. with lot's for quality of live / visual additions. Note Id say ostfront is like early access because it's still getting major updates
@ZenxoXD that is the first I've heard of this, excellent news! I appreciate the game focuses on the Eastern Front but a USA DLC is definitely interesting, don't you think?
For me I fall right into “owning both games” camp and for the longest time I couldn’t bring myself to playing GoH. The major reason is that I really like more compact maps with faster gameplay loop of the Assault Squad 2. Yet Conquest (Dynamic Campaign) from GoH had finally broke me. I got used to buying trucks to move units around instead of them being useless piles of tin foil
So I play both and go back and forth with my friends. The situation reminds me of CoD vs Battlefield. One has a fast paced more arcady gameplay while the other goes for more realism with larger battles. But unlike CoD and Battlefield there’s no competition between GoH and AS2 I feel. The coexist and still worth buying. Even though DLC price for GoH kinda bites
@playahification Interesting to hear what you say about gates of hell dlc, is there anything in particular you dislike?
@@twiglets2 my bad. There’s nothing wrong in particular. Just the price in my region is slightly too steep
14:06 Best analogy
As a player of MOWAS2, CTA, GOH with over a thousand hours combined (MOWAS2 having the most), Gates of hell in all honnesty. Has the better controls, gameplay, graohics, style, sounds etc. etc. Like legit who know dragging your soilders silouties on cover would spread them our. Its super useful and it often sucks goin bsck to cta or as2. But it has no where near the mod support of men of war assault squad two. If i wanna boot up a cold war mod i only so far have hot mod. In mowas2 i have red frog, project twilight (if i remember the name) and orher various while cancled still there mods (valour cold war). Modern day as well from Red Rising to Modern Warfare. Mowas2 also has mods like robz, valour or world at war introducing even more niche nations into the game. By comparasion valour for gates of hell adds 3 small factions and the french and british and japanese. Pretty unfortunate considering two of those were base game for mowas2 and the others being poland, italy and Hungary while super fun to play tend to wear out. I always manage to find myself going back to AS2 with friends or the editor since the mods allow me to make so many cool and hypothetical scenario's.
If men of war assault squad 2 had the body physics of GOH then it would be perfect but I love goh and the liberation dlc is something I’m highly waiting for
@drouzysirenvr2097 being excited for a new dlc is one of the best feelings, I hope they live up to expectations!
MoW2 is too arcadey. GoH is raw and dark. I've had some surreal experiences in GoH, like a Lone Survivor taking out an AT Halftrack with a single grenade thrown into the open carriage, capturing said halftrack, and using it to take out 5 German tanks before getting killed by a King Tiger.
I will remember that war hero forever.
@Classicsniper00 haha excellent!
Came to get answer to my question of “the fuck is Assault Squad 2?” Yet i stayed for the hilarious narration of this “showdown” between these games. 😂 wow.
@Daryl673 I hope you enjoyed it!
Gates of hell all the way! Men of war 2 looks like a mobile game, also I believe it’s different developers than Men of Assault squad 2.😊
Just saying that cat had it coming ok!?
honestly i want like the men of war 2 campaign on gates of hell
@ggomega9211 it's tough to choose between the two! Luckily we can enjoy both, but I do think gates of hell is getting better with each new update
hey this reaview was really fun.
@6TypoS9 I'm glad you enjoyed it!
With CoH3 released we need a Royal Rumble of all WW2 real time wargames with Graviteam Tactics, Steel Div 2 and Combat Mission joining the pileup. 😁
@090giver090 Haha great idea, now that would be something! Do you reckon CoH3 would take it due to sheer money reasons?!
@@twiglets2 Ah yes, the Tripple H wargame! 🤣
what i really want is soldiers of anarchy remade in the gem engine
I think that overall GoH is definitely a better product. Better AI, looks better, more stable, and offers better animations and mechanics.
That’s not to knock on AS2 buts it’s almost a compliment to it. It’s just like AS2 but “better” which is a really good thing
The ONLY thing AS2 has over it are the mods. Without question the mod support on GoH is abysmal at best(as in there aren’t anywhere near the same amount of mods or quality on GoH)
I’m looking forward to some of them coming over but I do know a lot of mod authors have stated that they don’t really plan on doing so because of how much work they’ve put into it.
So here’s hoping that men of war 2 comes out considerably better than that terrible beta we got so it can outshine both.
@pHixiq Let's hope so! It's a shame there aren't many factions in the base game of GoH but it keeps releasing new content and getting better!
I dont know feels like something is missing in goh that i cant put my finger on, imho its got a way to go to top some of the great robz realism missions and campaigns like wacht am rhein, hasnt stopped me from putting hundreds of hours into goh conquest😂
@williammacaulay1245 I know what you mean, but I feel GoH has a lot more to give over the next few years. It feels like a passion project
I've got both games, all their DLCs and love them. They are vastly better games than the recent Company of Heroes 3, which was another game from a big studio with a disappointing release. Still love and play the original COH though and COH2 is very decent game just a shame about all it's microtransactions that have always put me off it. Also got a soft spot for the old blitzkrieg/sudden strike games.
@michaelfielding6666 Thank you for sharing your experience. Of the DLCs for Ostfront are there any that stick out as better or worse in your opinion?
😮 "Then suddenly ostfront pulls out it's trap card! " THE M.A.C.E MOD
@leofflaedbarrett1606 I've not heard of that!?
I did buy gates of hell but returned it, the inability to destroy buildings, was a definite no go, among other things, the ai is way worse than men of war 2, no 4k support also the vehicle pathing was nothing but a traffic jam, I did like the sounds and the less hectic play, but could not get over the building thing, it did have good graphics, aside from being the most dismal whether in a game
@tomgiorgini9154 That's very interesting to hear!
Was there anything in particular about the ai that came across as bad? I'm always interested to hear example of what doesn't work.
the ai seemed extremely stupid, I'm talking about the intelligence of the player owned tank infantry gun whatever, I watched a tank sit right next to an enemy tank for10 seconds or more, I had driven it there to get a shot on the side for better penetration no direct control it was aimed right at his side never fired watched the turret on enemy tank turn like 180 and then fire and take me out. that was just one example. I do like the game I think I am going to buy it again, I had returned it, there are many things I like about it the one thing I hate is the inability to destroy buildings, in one instance there was a infantry man behind a wall and same man then behind a house wall I could not kill him with he it was as if the round did not exist, i had to run him down then get him with the mg, since then I have seen an engagement were the player was dropping that karl mortar on stuff and it was breaking it down, do you know what gives with building destruction. thanks for the reply@@twiglets2
Call to arms is getting a liberation campaign so hell yea
@matijazdravkovic2613 I can't wait!
You should review a wrestling game and use military terms in it! Wonder how that would sound! 😂
@boraonlone7036 haha! Well, we won't find out unless I try!
You don't need to own original Call to Arms to play Gates of Hell Ostfrot from now on, also in Ostfront you have single player campain that Assault Squad 2 don't have, so I think we have clear winner here. 😁
@Honza135 ostfront is receiving all the updates and now you no longer need call to arms...I totally agree with you!
I'm sure there is a good comparison of both games hidden somewhere in this vid, but it is burried under the pioenof wrestling metaphores.
@kulik242 If you look hard enough you'll see it, might take a while though!
Who was in the "director's box"???
I was genuinely laughing the entire time.
Why?
8:10 AS2 has first person mod too.
Nice cool!!!
@cesarmonaco7093 Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
It would be GoH, if it worked consistently.
Ostfront is like a newer MoWAS2 for me i love them both
@papanate2141 Same, both are great games! Are you looking at Men of War 2?
For me it's an easy contest - Men of War II has HP bars for vehicles, so it's dead on arrival. Men of War Assault Squad 2 has the most content, but it's only available as a 32 bit client, meaning it can't use more than 4 gb of ram resulting in limited moddability. So there's one game left, and it's Gates of Hell.
@PineCone227_ Nice assessment, especially the HP bars!
Gates of Hell does have its critics though, especially when it comes to performance in skirmishes. Have you experienced any performance issues?
@@twiglets2 I've never encountered any performance issues, but I run it on either a I7-9700K + RTX 3080Ti or Ryzen 9 5900HX + RTX 3080 (mobile), so my hardware might be a bit overqualified for the task. I can see how it could be a problem though, because back when I had a 1060 6 gb it would sound like it was in agony while running GoH.
@@PineCone227_ I'm on a 1080 at the moment (4070ti in the post yay!) and have struggled a bit but not noticeably. I have had many players tell me they've experienced problems though so I guess it depends on who you are. On balance Gates of Hell gets my vote at the moment, but it's nice to have alternatives in such a niche genre!
Didnt they put out an alternate asualt squad 2 with upgrades and engine. Yeah forgot what they calle ir
Still no tactical pause, damn it.
Not McArthur! The U.S. military really did throw up a special kind of ego-maniac.
Which DLC adds building destruction?
The upcoming Liberation DLC will add some building destruction
@@twiglets2 but there is building destruction in base game in the dynamic conquest mode.
@@NOTMrSibghat is there? I didn't realise that... Is it only in conquest mode?
@@twiglets2 Yes its not in the campaign for some fucked up reason.
@@NOTMrSibghat That's a shame, thank you for the insight!
If they ever update the destruction system of building and scenery in general for Gates of Hell, it would be a no brainer buy for me. It's the only thing that I disliked about Call to Arms.
You cant attack MoW As2 for the dlc, come on, they're like 1$ cheap
I believe the requirement for Call to Arms has been removed to play Gates of Hell :)
@Atreidez It has! Happy days
I have Ostfront , never played it . Can't even figure out how to start a Skirmish in single player .
@nonmasker1360 At least you don't need a dlc to play skirmish!
imagine buying an dlc just to buy a new dlc 03:02 everyone is taking a dump on DICE its business model but Digitalmindsoft business model is the buttom of hell
I sub this video is hilarious 😂
@dakinoytc986 welcome aboard!
Did not play any of this 2, so i hole this vid will hell me
The maps for GOH are much more immersive
@neandertal121 Agreed!
Cant say hows MoW, but GoH user interface is one big mess. Not in battle, but in barracks. Units management, research, inability to manage loadouts, etc.
If they want become good, they have to improve that first.
@cyphi474 agreed it does all look a bit early access!
@@twiglets2 I have checked MoW...its pretty much same. Just without campaign, so there was no research or army building interface needed.
GoH have to do better, to compete on today market. There is potential, but it needs to be sold. User friendly, easy to understand UI is the key.
@@cyphi474 it seems like an easy update too, it would make all the difference
This 15 minute video could've been 5 if you retired the wrestling metaphor after the third or fourth time
@richmondmemedepot7180 It's true, but that would have been less fun for me
AI has changed. using mortars and Artillery now, what AS never could. So now GoH wins there too.
@Hansiwansi Ultimately GoH is improving all the time, it's great to see if go from strength to strength. It's also still fun to play MoWAS2, a shame GoH doesn't have more factions.
@@twiglets2 on 29th this month America is added. I bet more factions to come.
@@Hansiwansi I hope so
Who is the guy? Who is the GUYY?
What guy 😂
9:48 you don’t need cta anymore.
@tubecrafter9980 true!
im waiting to see comments of how bad MoW2 is. came out just 5 days ago and is apparently Bad
@Nikky1945 it's overall pretty decent but with some issues. you have to be online all the time at the moment which is a big red line for many players
They both are great games and played both a lot now and i think i like GOH a bit more because of the advanced ballistics. But i eould love it even more if the ai wouldn't bedog shit. Like arma 3 has better ai then both these games combined.
@xmastersrule Better ai and more factions would make this game even better than it currently is!
as a veteran all ""men of war" (soldiers, faces of war) games i prefer gates of hell.
@Leelareso Gates of hell is going from strength to strength and it's great to see
10x better but hey, one is a new game
i have... no idea what i just watched...
@fennyfinari906 Success!
No more need for CtA.
This comparison is easy won by Gates of Hell imo. The graphics is pretty much the same roughly. But the gameplay and overall mechanics is far superior. Also like the dyn. campaign and several mechanics ingame. Also i feel like the tank warfare is WAY WAY WAY better than MOWAS
@blackginkgo8169 since this video was made I absolutely agree with you. Ostfront gets more and more content, from the developers and the modding community whereas assault squad 2 is what it is. I enjoy both!
@@twiglets2 damn i havent finished the video and yet youre so fast xd
Yea it got tons of content since then, i fell in love with it as i switched from MOWAS in early december. Love the dynamic campaign it really adds the feeling of advancing from 41 to 44/45. Us germans struggled against KW-series tanks in 41 and so did i in my campaign i loved it! Also minefields really add realism, only downside is the 1k points cap during campaign missions :/
Ostfront is better, but the AI is really bad. It seems like in the new MOW 2 coming out next month they AI is much less braindead so I'll probably buy it for that reason.
@portman8909 that's interesting to hear. I gave mow2 a try and didn't notice bad ai to be fair. Considering AI is the main complaint with many RTS games it'll be interesting to see how mow2 performs.
In smaller budget RTS like this it's defo a problem. Obviously big budget stuff like Age of Empires 4 the AI is flawless and there's never any pathing issues.
But at the same time this is a realistic 3D game with many different terrain elevations etc. Much harder to programme all of this with a smaller budget.@@twiglets2
now with Liberation DLC, GoH is much better
@dark_bork I need to try it!
Of course it’s fucking better.
I'm hoping men of war 2 takes the best of it all.
Sadly after the beta it seems like babies first gates of hell osfront
Way better the 1st person instantly made it so
when talking about D-MOVES, the only reason OSTFRONT makes you purchase the call to arms is because the call to arms studio wanted to make a ww2 game and they wouldn't allow it, so the studio split in half and so it was made, but the guy who own the call to arms wouldn't let them use the engine and the assets unless they put the call to arms title in the name and also making them purchase the first game. (hence the long name as it was suppose to just be called gates of hell ostfront) the studio decided it would take to much effort and resources to make an engine of there own so they decided to play along. And there you have it. So it was not there choice or decision to make people pay for the first game just sucks that's how it panned out and they are slightly judged for it.
@naru6081 thanks for the information, I had an idea that was the case but not in that much detail. It is a shame but ultimately sounds like they made the right decision.
I enjoy their developer updates, so detailed and so regular it's reassuring to see them working so hard! Ostfront is the future
@naru6081 Ostfront was made by own Barbedwire Studios unrelated to Call to Arms which is made by DMS. DMS didn't force them to join under Call to Arms, it was simply only way to save Ostfront without completely changing game engine when Barbedwire Studios and Best Way which is GEM engine holder broke up.
@@ComandorPotato interesting!
