My daughter has a Renegade and it has been a very pleasant surprise to me. Great little car with a superior 4wd system to other small crossover utes. It is a real hoot to drive, too! (Flame on if you want, I've got 2 built Rubicons.)

I had the renegade for little over 3 years. I had the 1.4 turbo 6speed manual 4x4 and it was a great experience. Mpg it was ok, power it was just fine, but it is very spacious, it handles very well and it does pretty good on snow and it never broke on me. Overall it’s a nice little car, perfect for who lives in the city.

I agree I have a 2015 1.4L turbo. It is peppy for when I needed it. I had a few issues with cheap parts. Once that was corrected the car has run quite well.

I bought the Renegade sport 4x4 22,400 after watching your video where you tested a Subaru that the CVT transmission couldn't perform off road. I love it no regrets. Great in deep snow no more shovelling to get out of my driveway.

Too much plastic, cheap interior, and at the highest trim level it should have just about everything without having to purchase them separately. Aka safety features that are already standard in just about the majority of trim levels in Toyota models.

I got an 18 Latitude 4WD cheap at the very end of May 19 here in MT (2.4/4WD). It was 30% off MSRP. There IS something that really stands out...particlarly in the Mountains. I'll get to that.
I got the Latitude for mileage and to take the load off my Ram that is best off road or pulling the trailer. My Ram 1500 with aftermarket 4WD gets 13 MPG and my wife won't let me drive her Cherokee Trail Hawk Elite. It was a loaded Latitude 31K+ MSRP or relatively stripped Trail Hawk (30K MSRP) for 22K. I have been pleasantly surprised. I was going for mileage and 4WD and these were the best deal around. What surprised me is that this is really fun to drive. It sits higher than others including Subys. It is quick handling and is a great big dog car. They love it. I am getting 24 plus MPG mixed and hit almost 30 on the flat cruising at 80 mph (Montana). I do have to admit that the transmission's quirks are my only criticism.
NOW, what makes it competitive? And Stands OUT? IT is the four wheel drive system. For the Mountains, it outshines ALL the other All Wheel Drive systems. And I am surprised FCA/Jeep doesn't tout this a bit more. In pure auto mode it is a front wheel drive and goes into AWD just like a Toyota RAV4 or any other of the AWD variants out there where if something slips, it automatically goes to AWD. In our six months of winter here, something is always slipping. So, it starts out with an equivalent AWD to the others...
But, and this is where it is different, if you see changing road conditions like a mile of snow/ice (shade of mountain) then a mile of clean pavement (out of the shade), all you got to do is punch the button and it goes into an "auto" 4WD for more traction.
IF, you got snow or slush, you put it in snow mode and you can feel it as it appears to cut out first gear totally and starts with lower torque second. It's kind of sluggish in this mode, but It doesn't spin on the ice on the slight uphill at my mailbox like it does in every other mode. It just sort of oozes onto the road. That is very nice. We just did a trip to Yellowstone and were in the park for three days snow shoeing and X Country skiing and looking and the auto 4WD and Snow mode were amazing. That was the first big test of that with extended use. It gets a major thumbs up for mountain driving in the snow and ice. It's better than the truck that pretty much is four wheel lock or nothing. AND I got 25 mpg on the three hour trip to and from, including the Thule XL sport and Rhino Rack for X Country skis/snowshoes that themselves were virtually unnoticable up there.
Not done yet with the four wheel drive system. I travel on National Forest roads a lot. That is dirt for your city dwellers, and the quality of maintenance varies. On some of the roads you can do fifty mph. On others, well, 25 is pushing it. Washboard is always in play as a variable. Well, in going to various places I discovered Sand mode. What is Sand Mode? Well, Sand Mode addresses many of the "quirks" of the transmission. The Cherokee Trail Hawk has a sport mode that I default to when I occasionally get to drive it that addresses the quirks of that platform and makes it quite fun to drive. Well, I think the Sand Mode is the "Jeep" Renegade Easter Egg of the transmission and resembles the Sport mode in the Cherokee but even more so.
What it does is raise the RPM's and puts the Renegade right in the powerband when you are driving on Forest Service Roads. You step on the gas it goes fast and none of that trying to figure out what it wants to do like the auto mode. Talk about fun, you can fly and it is easy to find that "place" where you just float above the washboard without losing traction like you do in the truck. It will do a nice controlled slide in and out of a turn. You still have control including improved downhill engine braking and all you gotta do is step on the gas and stay away from the brakes. Awesome.
So, I haven't used the Mud setting yet and likely won't...or at least until I lift it an inch or two and put some BF Goodrich KO2's on it but that is another story yet to be told. IF, you live in the Mountains or travel dirt roads, this little thing and I'm not talking a Trail Hawk version either is a little beast. Like I said, I have been very pleasantly surprised and I got all the bells and whistles like an 8.4 inch with Nav, tow package, cold weather package including heated seats/wheel remote start (all needed when it is 41 below like last winter) etc. I am also fortunate I can compare it to a 2019 Cherokee Trail Hawk. That is helpful.
Negatives: My only complaint that bugs me is manual downshifting and I don't have the LED headlight system. The Ram is instant on downshifting. The Renegade going down a hill or pass actually seems to speed up before the downshift "catches" and you can use engine braking. Not good, actually a pain. The general complaint about the transmission hunting and searching and figuring out what to do, I believe, is imho an intentional result of FCA trying to maximize MPG's because of CAFE standards. You put the transmission in one of the other modes and it is a different animal entirely. Sand mode is similar to Sport Mode in a Cherokee. Now, I wouldn't drive it 80 MPH in any of the specialized modes and it says don't go over 55 in 4WD anyway, but below that, go for it. Dirt Roads, just default to Sand mode. In the snow and Ice, go snow or even regular one push 4WD.
Hey, you live in the city? Get something else with AWD for the few days of "weather" you have. For the mountains get a Jeep with an array of four wheel drive modes for all the stuff I promise you will run into and the fun you can have. You can't go wrong. They don't even sell two wheel drive pick up trucks or Jeeps where I live. Really. Oh, did I say the dogs love it... I go in the truck now and the dogs go to the Renegade and mope when I stuff them in the crew cab. Nuff said...

      @tallll70 Před 4 lety

Yes, Renegade has good combination of 4x4 and awd, true center locker and 2 speed transfer case, I even seen these lifted with slightly bigger wheels much better tires and they crawling small rocks next to Rubicons, so that ofcourse lowers ride quality on road then standard crossovers have, but that's is just how it works with suspension tuned for offroad. If it will not have excessive reliability problems, it might just be pretty good

I cannot understand why Jeep cannot get the nine speeder to work properly in this of apparently the Cherokee. Other brands have no such issue. I know because I run a 2015 Honda CRV twin-turbo diesel with it and it is brilliant. Big other users include Mini and Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque and they all get praised for the transmission, although very early applications had a software update or two.

Huw Williams, the only difference between a "balloon payment purchase" (Citibank used to call it Preferred Retail Plan or PRP) and a lease is that you can justify (and qualify for) a lease for the deductions you take at tax time as "a business expense".
Otherwise in such a small crossover a lease makes no sense at all (with a relatively high depreciation rate...).

This renegade is the right sweet spot for most. I can go to Sams club and Walmart and feed store for big bags of bird seed in one trip. If you must have one of these I highly recommend the trailhawk model. Why the heck not? I see no point in other versions, go trailhawk instead. It’s more for two people than 5. 3 people for sure. Fiat Panda is a world on its own, especially the original model. Timeless. If someone ever drove a 4x4 Fiat Panda (the original version) knows what I mean...such fun and seriously reliable 4x4. This Renegade is build on the same base of the Fiat 500X with a different exterior, which is nice imo. There are not Jeeps, Fiat and Alfa Romeo like they used to...with all these buying brands, merging brands and so on very few brands stay true to themselves and unique. What a pity...and now the FCA group dealing with Pegeout.... globalization is a cancer.

While it does not really meet my needs, I still think its a great little crossover and does not look like every other crossover out there. Its has adequate power and gets about 26-27 mpgs. Only thing I noticed is that the 9 speed transmission sometimes hunts for the appropriate gear, but its not really a major issue. I know a few people that have owned Renegades since 2016, and all of them have been happy with the vehicle so far.

Merry Christmas to everyone at TFL, even though Roman and Tommy won't see any true Christmas trees in Florida, but there are plenty back in Denver, CO. Thanks for this buddy review, I would have to agree with the lease it vs. buy it mostly because of the reputation that Fiat Chrysler has for unreliability. As I have stated many times on all your channels, I WANT a Colorado ZR2, but I don't have the money or credit score for it right now and if God forbid my car went down I would almost be forced to look at the subcompact segment of crossovers since I want more ground clearance, and the Renegade in the Trailhawk trim is on my list, along with the Crosstrek and a couple others. Most likely would have to go preowned and look at the bigger brother in the thankfully facelifted bigger brother in the 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk. Which I have seen on Cargurus with less than 30k miles for $24,000 which speaks to the depreciation that many vehicles outside of the Toyota Tacoma and Jeep Wrangler face after driving off the lot. Thanks again for this nice buddy review even though the hula girl didn't make the trip down to where there is actual palm trees. haha

It lost thousands in depreciation and she couldn't even sell it at C$25000 (it starts at C$28445 without destination, dealer fees, or taxes). There are much better buys, such as a base RAV4 or CX-5.
