- We tested two vintage poacher guns and this video shows what happened. These poacher guns have interesting takedown capabilities which would have been a great advantage if you needed to conceal the gun. These 16ga. guns have life in them still, and are great additions to any collection.

Hi Mike. Please don’t worry what anybody thinks or tolerates about your condition. Doesn’t bother me (or should it anyone else) at all. 🙂
Thank you - I'll hang on as long as I can and in the meantime - life is such a gift. All the best!
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns CBD has helped tremendously for me. You need to get the full spectrum one, it lets me function again.
some people need to harden eff up.
You Sir are a the real deal of a gun enthusiast!
Thanks for sharing your hobby with us gun nutz @@UnitedStatesOfGuns
😂 What ñ kicker! Love your vidio's
Looks like a European poachers gun. Something that could be taken apart in a book bag. Very interesting engineering on it, almost improvised.
Shotgun canes often use similar systems.
Mike - your cheerful perseverance in sharing your love of fine firearms is an inspiration. Please don’t apologize!
Brother man! Your doing just fine, Bring it!
🙏
I love your videos and never thought anything like that .I thought like my dad as he got older his hands did similar. I love how you show alot of guns of the past when steel and wood was the norm.
Wish you all the best Mr USOG. I love your videos and positive spirit!
Thanks for firing these guns, great to see them working & disasembled. Awsome clips you share. Cheers from Australia.
Very interesting guns. I am always surprised to only see a few hundred views for your videos. Your enthusiasm and presentation is fantastic and you show such a wide variety of firearms. Thanks for sharing your love of the sport with us.
humbleness is a welcome human enjoyment , not often seen.
I would have a hard time bringing myself to hold it by the barrel too lol Cool gun though, thanks as always for sharing!
Oh, c’mon! I think you’d tough it out if only to keep the barrel from flying off!? You managed to keep the Dominion Arms shorty in your grip, and I have faith that you could do the same with this-now that Mike has shared his experience. I’d wager Mrs. WestCoaster would be up for it, but I don’t think you’d let her?
@@frufru0071 maybe with gloves? 🤞
It’s a nice little design.
Thanks for the explanation of your medical diagnosis. As a retired pharmacist, I expressed my concern previously. I had a customer with a similar condition. Hers worsened when she had to speak or sing in front of an audience.
Definitely interesting. Owning those would definately be for the collector which im not one of. Id wager the type of load used in those is equally interesting as the firearm.
Well done! That was literally a blast to see such an unusual gun. I got a kick out of it too:)
I think some foam pipe insulation from Canadian Tire would fit nice on the barrel for a better grip to shoot.
I realize that's more of a poachers gun .The coolest take downs ive seen n my days was da military pilot guns . N case they had to eject they at least had something to hunt w or close range . I still love going to flea markets n such seems like u always run across something u haven't seen before .
Don't worry my friend i Don't care if you have tremors and are missing a limb or an eye, your a great guy, love your channel and will watch as long as you keep uploading 😊👍
I was just today looking at Chuck Hawks recoil tables and my goodness I’m sure that thing would cripple a mortal man……..that tremor isn’t stopping you at all Sir 🍻💯
No apologies needed, you are a wealth of knowledge and I dare to say one of my favorite channels. I will however blame you for sparking more than a few interest in one of my greatest passions. Again I can't thank you enough!
Always an interesting video! This was right out of the park. We do the best with what we have and soldier on. Glad to know you can compensate and still enjoy what you do. Best wishes and looking forward to many more videos.
Hey. Thanks for the expaination for the shaking.
Just thinking of Mr. Harrell.
We like you as well and care.
Look forward to many more vids from you.
Well Mike, it's not often that your video content, makes me laugh ( a bit ) but that recoiling shotgun did then.:) Good recovery on that one, by the way. Hahaha.
Interesting guns to be sure.
Very interesting ... but I'm afraid that would be a wall hanger at my house.
Fascinating - as always! Agree it is most likely designed and purpose-built for furtive activities such as poaching wherein disassembly into small components is a significant advantage. As you have noted, a gamekeeper has no need for an extremely light breakdown shotgun.
Thanks for the review, and I salute you for shooting it, especially more than once!
I don't need to take my turn...
This channel is my secret gem. It may even be my favorite gun channel...and i follow all of them.
Very entertaining indeed 😅
I was hoping you'd cover these poachers guns more. Very interesting. I like the simple design. Not the most practical, but certainly interesting. I hadn't noticed your condition. I also have essential tremor as a result of lymes disease. Only in my left hand. Im not sure whats so essential about it. Seems like most folks get on fine without it 😂. Doesn't make a difference now that ive gotten used to it. Take care. Thanks for all the great videos.
Been following your releases for quite a while, sir. They are amongs the most interesting and cognitive, I've subscribed for. I sincerely wish You good health and ability to further stay with us, Your fans.
Very cool!
Interesting old shotgun. You might take a bore scope and check the chamber to see if there might be a shiny ring to indicate if there were a lot of short shells that has been shot thru it.
I appreciate the fact that you shoot these old and unique guns. I don't buy a gun that I can't shoot..I can't abide "wall hangers". Recently received two sxs shotguns, one owned by my grandfather (born in 1892)
Marked "Syracuse Arms Company, Syracuse NY" on top the right Barrell and "Triplet Steel" on the other. Gun is tight, but the break lever has to be manually closed to lock the action shut. I cleaned it up and fired each barrel with some paper RKS 2 1/2" shells I use in another 12 gauge that I have marked "laminated steel"- a Belgian made "Parkhurst". The other belonged to my father (living, aged 83). Dad hasn't fired his probably since the late 1950's. It is marked "Royal Gun Works, Belgium" on both sides plates behind each hammer, and an indistinguishable symbol followed by "1512 Cast Steel Belgium" on the top of the rib between the barrels. Both triggers cock and operate normally, but the gun has a lot of play when closed, so much as I would like to, I will refrain from firing this one. I did not notice your hand tremors;my coworkers comment on mine, which are quite annoying when trying to carry fine mechanical work(I'm 58). I assume mine are from work related stress and too much coffee...
Neat little gun. I too have tremors, other people noticed more than I.
Please ignore those insensitive comments. I love your collection, knowledge and videos. Thank you.
Thank you!
What a gentleman. Nothing but class. My favorite gun channel. Keep educating and inspiring.
Cool gun.. cool video.
You ever own a Savage model 219? I had one in 30-30 … such a fine , simple meat harvester. Thanks for sharing.
I only recently found your channel. You and your channel are one of the most unpretentious and informative on firearms that can be viewed. You seem a kind person who genuinely wants to share your knowledge and experiences. So much so that after binging your videos over a series of days, I've enjoyed your knowledge, humor, and warmth, but I didn't notice your tremors at all. So, for that, I am sorry.
Keep up what you're doing. This is more of the type of firearms content we need. There's plenty of tactical, hunting, self-defense, long-range precision, etc. stuff available. What is lacking is folks, like yourself, just talking about guns. Like we are all around the table, coffee in hand, just talking about the guns. Thank you.
🙏 I'm glad you found my channel and like it. Thank you!
I have a really lightweight single shot 12 ga and was worried it will be really jumpy like this takedown gun you have.
love the videos as always.
Nice guns bud, thank you for the demonstration. Glad to hear you are doing well. God bless.
Hello Mike. You are a good man. Thanks for all you great videos. This is my favorite youtube channel. I am going to pray for you. God Bless you!!!
They are neat little gun's.
Hey Mike, great to meet you at the range today! You look way younger in person!
You're good man no complaints here buddy Roe
Great job I enjoyed your video very much!
You provide great practical content on historical firearms and seem like a good guy -- keep it coming
That is so cool. I am glad that you uploaded a shooting video.
Save the hulls and make some light loads with blackpowder or blackpowder substitute.
I think you're right in your naming "poacher gun," I don't see why a game manager would carry such an arm. In modern times with modern laws the concept is highly offensive but in the past if a poacher were to stick to varmints and none-game animals many private estates would simply chuckle. If you only shot Hair's, and Fox's a Land-Lord would probably say should I charge you or you charge me?
Another great video Mike, I could watch your content for hours. Your simple approach, keen observations and straight forward presentations are very much appreciated. Keep them coming and we'll all keep watching and liking. Cheers!
PizzA!

Keep up the great videos Mike!
G'Day,
You don't need to apologize for your medical condition. If some people have some kind of issue with it, then it's THEIR problem not yours! I've been following your fine channel for some time now and I will need a few more life times to watch all of your videos!
Just in passing, I'm dealing with the Big C, as John Wayne called it. I find strength and inspiration in the words of Winston Churchill--" Never give up---Never surrender! "
Wishing you well and Kind Regards,

G'Day Again,
Thank you for your words of encouragement. Yes, I am confident that I will win this battle.
May I call you mike in future comments?

Yeah, I could see a game keepers gun if it came apart to two pieces, to make it convenient to store, but three? Gotta be for poachers. Not that I know that. Just seems to make sense.
Also, wouldn’t these have been black powder guns?
The museum curator said he had seen many black powder poacher's guns - some that were in 4 parts and one that looked liked a small shovel.
@@UnitedStatesOfGunswhich is just so sorrowful-on a monumental scale. You’d think that someone with the intellect and ability to make a gun look like a shovel and lock up "tighter than a Frog’s bottom in January", would be able to find employment that’d put food on the family table. At least a person with such skills wouldn’t have to poach. What a strange world this is. Thanks for sharing yet ANOTHER great story with us and shooting this gun!
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns lol, a shovel gun would definitely be a cool find!
Being a quadriplegic with spastic paralysis, I can relate to your tremor. People often assume that I was in a car accident, (& when I was younger, that I had a drunk-driving accident), but I’m sure you know the saying about how irresponsible/ignorant it is to assume anything. I think I’ve told you that I broke my neck at work, when I was a Ski Patroller in the interior-I’d rather not name the Resort. It doesn’t surprise me that YOU would apologize for making people feel uncomfortable, you are the consummate gentleman, Mike. I have just spotted an Anschutz 1827 Fortner. Is $3000 reasonable for one with Biathlon sights & 4 magazines?
This gun kinda seems suited to like a long travel hiker. You want as little weight as possible but a poacher also makes sense.
You're right
I suspect that the gunmakers may have expected the gun owner to use a glove, a cloth or the end of a scarf when holding the barrel. Less can be more with takedown kit.
Interesting bit of gun history.
Chris
Mike I love your videos and the way you explain about all of them !! You are a great guy Mike . Keep them coming especially with our times they way they are ! I'm curious older guns are so wonderful. Ps that sixteen really kicks I really chuckled becareful ok!!
Thank you my friend - I'll keep going. Your words help me a lot. All the best to you.
Love how you talk.
The take down on the stock is amazing!👍🏽😀❤️🇺🇸
Sure is slick
How come the one with the two piece barrel isn't an nfa item when disassembled?
It would sure make a great truck gun on the farm.
Love your content.
Just got a nice rem wingmaster 870 in 16 gauge Monty Carlo stock, checkering. On a smoking deal . Not 🔥 deal either guy just wasn't in to them grandpa left it to him. 150$ does has nice scratch few little ones to but overall superb Remington.
What wonderful shotguns. I honestly think these were just "takedown" guns, which entails all the people who might want one. That might include poachers (perhaps a little less today), outdoorsmen who wanted something lightweight for their pack, and even children (thinking of those .22 takedown rolling blocks, bicycle rifles or other weird small .22's like the quakenbush or the game getter).
That makes sense - I'd be surprised is there was a shop that advertised "Poachers' Guns and Other Guns for Crime Made Here" : ) You're right.
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I just was scrolling randomly on reddit and found a similar modern ultralight .22 called the pack-rifle. Interesting design, I had seen the crazed ultralight backpackers make their own before, seems somebody has a production version.
Perhaps this gun originally fired black powder loads ?
Cool guns. The second one definitely looks like a one off "artisinal" build. I doubt that the intended use for these is anything other than nefarious. No way any sort of game warden type person would be carrying something like that.
I was at Walmart and noticed they had 16 and 28 gauge, maybe try that place. I considered buying those shells but I don't own a 16 or 28.
I seen that earlier video shaking i figured it was something like that. One my best friends growing up was alcoholic i mean alcoholic. My dad is a drinker And he doesn't have tremors i don't know how but anyway my friend he would shake in morning until get few drinks in him. Always felt bad for that and He's died several years back now. He would be about 50,51 years old. R. I. P. Jerry Knight.
I got few boxes of them at Walmart believe it or not. 7shot , 2 boxes of 6 shot. And they had several boxes 8 shot.
Thanks for sharing, what part of the world do you live? Pretty
Until you mentioned it I didn’t even noticed your condition, soldier on. Ppl are such busy bodies
Thank you! I'll keep going
Great gun, passionate presenter, the rest is unimportant.👍
Hey, you owe no one any explanation for any of your medical conditions. Im in chronic pain 24/7 from a spinal injury. The meds im on have given me tremors/nervous jerks etc. I cant control them. Anyway, most have no idea what it's like living like this. it's they, who owe us the explanation why they feel the way they do to comment on ones health like that.
Hello my friend, I feel for you 🙏 I have no pain - or none associated with tremor anyway. But I know chronic pain from my past - and I send you all powers, hopes, wishes and thoughts that you may be free of pain soon. God Bless you.
Hey mike #usog have you ever come across a cane gun? Used by both gentlemen and ruffians. Simple mechanics and usually a muzzleloader or rimfire
Enjoyed your video. Not sure I would want to put my fingers in front of the chamber at least till I had built up a good bit of trust and firing many times. LOL Don't want to lose any of my fingers.
I hear you! Maybe I'll get a steel glove : )
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Keep on with the videos. I have enjoyed each one I have watched. I think watching your videos is what got me more interested in Bolt Guns.
If it truly was a poachers gun, then maybe it was supposed to be used with black powder loads which would've made the recoil more of a push than a smack because of slower burn rate?
Good thought - but actually black powder explodes, whereas smokeless powder burns; as odd as that may seem. Yet, you're on the right track - I'm pretty sure they used light loads - either smokeless or black. I'll cook some up and see how she goes. Cheers.
True, but isn't the gas expansion rate slower with black powder, making it a deflagration instead of a detonation? Not quite sure tbh, that's just what comes to mind from waaaay back...
Yeah, sadly shops and even some food markets have something not seen in decades, empty shelves. But let’s send some more billions somewhere not here!
It's a tragedy.
I really don’t like these videos because now I have to go find one of these guns to add to the collection. All joking aside I love all your videos as I also collect odd stuff . Thanks again
Thank you for the good words 👍😀
Really neat guns. Probably impossible for me to find or afford but, I can keep dreaming
Yeah, I'd hold it by the barrel for sure, but may need to make a forearm for it. Ha
Hey any thoughts on the Sako 100 explorer? Haven’t seen much content on it surprisingly considering it’s a Sako with switch barrel options but the price could be why. Thanks!
Another twist in the Sako story - I wish I could find one! As soon as I do - I'll make a video. As it is - all I can do is look and read and hope : )
Mike, I have a 1893 Marlin takedown that I want to preserve the stock without damaging. I'm considering a light coat of tung oil applied with an exceptional wax from Gilboys, a restorer of antique furniture from England over it that seems to be very good. Could you find time to tell me if what I want to do would damage this firearm. Much appreciated for any response.
Tom
Hi Tom, I would go with OOOO steel wool and the wax. If the wax doesn't have any colour to it; then use Briwax on gouges and scratches and overcoat with the Gilboys. I find that wax feeds a stock better than oil IMHO. Please let me know how it goes.
Thank you for responding Mike. It's not easy getting reliable information on this if any. It's easy for me to have confidence in your knowledge. Sorry for picking your mind once again.on this. Are you saying I should use a coat of the Gilfoys and and then fill in blemishes in the stock, with Briwax before recoating it with the Gilfoys? Should I reapply the Brixwax over the blemishes until the stock is fairly smooth? I see that the Bixwax comes in different shades. Should I try and match one to the oil finish before going over it with the Glfoys? Sorry again, but I don't want to make any mistakes with this antique firearmI feel entrusted to do right by, until it's passed on.
Tom

Are telescopic sights with Japanese optics good for hunting at night?
Not really.
Sir I just bought a Steyr Mannlicher Luxus M, it has the old safety mounted on the right-hand side it's full length wood with a 20inch barrel, stunning timber in 308. Could you please tell me about it. David
Hi David, One of the finest rifles/carbines ever; made in Austria as you know - rotary magazine; should have the swirl hammer forging contours on the barrel. Fit and finish is Swiss watch quality. Sometimes double set triggers but the triggers are all excellent. Accuracy is usually target rifle grade. Maybe you have .308? Anyway the caliber doesn't matter. Great purchase. Bravo.
Many thanks, I love your channel and knowledge. Please never stop making videos.
