ROSS Rifles: A Canadian Classic
Here is a detailed look at a classic Canadian stalking rifle including shooting original 280 Ross ammunition that's OVER 100 years old! I have both a 1905 Ross sporter and a 1910 Ross sporter so we get a great look at them side by side. Ross Rifles are excellent straight pulls. These straight pulls, and especially the 280 Ross cartridge, were definitely ahead of their time. Come see if I like the 1905 or 1910 best, and whether or not that old ammo fired.

Should THIS WINCHESTER Be Restored to Factory Condition?

Thought it would be interesting to restore this Pre-64 Model 70 target/Match/Palma Deluxe rifle to its factory state. I tried to find a factory stock for the restoration. Looks better, no? Let me know what you think. The barrel is still not factory, but I kinda like this one in 7mm Gibbs. I actually found some original Rocky Gibbs ammo so it would be interesting to see it in action. Two of the BEST Bolt Actions EVER MADE

Today I show two of the best bolt action rifles ever - the Sako Finnbear and the Tikka 65. In my opinion, the Sako Finnbear and Tikka 65 are better than most of the rifles made today, and they seem to be available for far less than what one would expect. We also look at a Husqvarna which is my pick for a "Best Buy" rifle. If you are into collecting, or looking for a great hunting rifle, this vi...

thank you for the great video! I love both rifles. curious about the twist rate in the Sako 30-06. is it 1 in 11?

Ein Meisterwerk ❤ der büchsenarbeit
I totally agree. 3rd and 4th could be TAP375 Lakelander and Husqvarna 640.
My ambidextrous hunting friend drew took many, many deer with his ruger .44 carbine. He's passed on now and hopefully his son Timmy has it now. Great little carbine.
Aren't they something! Nothing quite like the original.
Most rifles like this cost a pretty penny now
You're right. Prices have gone way up.
Hi everybody Does anyone know where I can get a Husqvarna 1640 extractor for a 270 bolt? With all these Huskies around surely there must be extractors available somewhere. Can someone please help me? I've had my extractor repaired but I need 1 or 2 for a backup just in case. I inherited the (lightweight model) rifle from my father. I guess it must be 65+ years old. It was rebarreled with a Musgrave 28" barrel. When I got it I had the barrel cut down to 25" in order to fit a silencer for hunting. I got it down to a half inch grouping with 130gr PMP points and under three quarter of an inch with 140gr Nosler points without too much effort. If anyone can help please let me know, I will appreciate greatly.
Hello, Numrich Gun Parts in the US; Western Gun Parts in Canada or Inter Surplus or Great North Guns or Ellwood Epps. You'll find.
I payed 750 for a model 12 in 2024. I didn't know what it was worth.
I paid about the same a couple weeks ago; has a solid rib. How things change. Guns keep going up
@UnitedStatesOfGuns even at the price I grabbed it off the shelf, and knew it was going to last another hundred years so I grabbed it up.
The Win model 88 and the Savage model 99 both were chambered in .358 Win and was about the best all around .35 caliber rifles. The one that everyone overlooks is the .356 Win in the Win model 94 and the Marlin model 336. Try finding them is next to impossible.
True post. TY
Confiscating personal property purchased legally with after-tax dollars is a terrible way to govern. (“The road to Hell is paved with good intentions”). The Model 54 is an interesting rifle. Mine is chambered in 338-06 in a full-length stock. Sweet rifle for a walk in the woods.
I have seen a few of both the sporting rifles and a few of the military rifles . Superb machine work .
That’s pretty cool, but there are quite a few of us that do not consider 1 inch to be accurate and certainly not one and a half inch. When we’re talking about accurate rifles being out of reach pricewise we are talking about rifles that are shooting half inch or less. There’s plenty of rifles that are relatively cheap and brand new that will easily shoot under an inch. Gotta love the classics though they are beautiful even when they beat up.
Good post. You're right - over the years hunters and shooters want those tiny groups. The target shooters want even smaller groups. Fortunately, there's room for every opinion and preference. Thanks for the note and good shooting.
Nice
Mike Sure Does Know How 2 Pull off a great video. Being an owner of a Ross MK -II 1905 Sporter in .35 Winchester Calibre can't tell you how honoured I feel seeing a Ross in Action by such a firearm enthusiac 😊
Thank you Asim! So good to speak with you the other day. All the best.
I was told that the problem with the Ross Rifle was two fold. It worked great with Canadian ammunition but had trouble with British Ammunition. It was also in competition with the best battle rifle of the time: The Enfield. Don Hansen
Thank you. I didn't know about the differing ammo. I shoot whatever I find in .303 or .280; all good so far. Mind you I'm not always in a muddy trench. For sure the Lee Enfield is the better rifle.
Let's see the best bolt action rifles ever made. That would be a Mouser and probably the Remington 700. Since the 700 was based off the Mossberg.
Okay
As always, very well done video and content I am very interested in the new BRX1. After your review, I feel good about the purchase. You are the wheelhouse of rifle expertise! Thanks for your investment of time and rifle interest!
An interesting rifle for sure. Going through the National Archives of Canada digitized imagery I was able to find a WW1 Battalion group photo with my Great Grandfather and other soldiers holding these Ross rifles. Was easily identifiable by the straight pull bolt. My great grandfather didnt see any action though when overseas as the CEF discovered he was 51 and confined to garrison duty before sending back home. He died at the of 94 and had the unique distinction of being the only Canadian (naturalized mind you) to have served in the 3rd Burma War in tge 1880s. I dont have a Ross rifle in my collection but I do have a Martini Henry which is what he would have lugged around when in Burma and India. It would have been taller than him:)
Thank you! Your post is so interesting. I'll have to read about the 3rd Burma War!
It wasnt much of a war per se but the guerilla conflict after the King was deposed carried on for years. The Brits basically were backing "India Tea Company" interests while making their presence known before other Russian and French interests moved in.
"You can put the bolt in backwards but I don't do that." I laughed way harder at than than I should have. That was great.
Bought a Sako Forester new in .243 Winchester when I was in junior college. Cost me $160 and still have the receipt and manufacture tag from Firearms International. Still have it. The rings at the time were $30 which was alot in the late 60's. Was a great all around rifle with a Redfield 3x to 9x scope. I treasure this classic.
FFS, having watched a lot of your videos, I swear we've got the same tastes in rifles. Marlin Levermatic? Check Winchester 88? Check Lee Enfields? Check Brno Hornets? Check And now you've busted out my favorite hunting rifle, the mighty 1910 Ross in the oft forgotten 280 Ross.
Thanks for a great review. I bought my Finnbear .300 Win Mag. 10/83. I live in Alaska and I can tell you that I by pass Weatherby's, Winchester's, Remington's, Ruger's, Mannlicher and others to grab the Sako when headed to the field. It is always driving tacks and so sweet to shoot. I refinished the stock two years ago and found a crack so as nice as the stocks are, they will crack. It has had hard use for 41 years including two tumbles with an ATV while in the scabber. This gun has harvested more different species than anything in my case. Love the Sako. JDD
G’day from Aus., sauce is always good, barbecue Iʼm hoping, 🐷😂🙈 & a bit of crackle😘
The R8 looks strange with mag sticking out like that.
Did you ever come across a french made .22 LR pistol grip rifle that at a flick of a leaver the action a grip came out and you can clip on a pistol barrel . the ten shot magazine loaded through the pistol grip.
And it’s not even a 99m
Superb show. A breathtaking amount of knowledge and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, as I live in Ireland our gun laws are unbelievely strict. Even getting a permit for a .22 is a minefield. Probably just as well I live here as I'd probably get totally to collecting. Keep up the excellent work and take care.
Thank you for writing. Hopefully better laws will return to Ireland. By coincidence I'm reading a book on the history of Ireland; much of it quite troubling. What all was done and yet the Irish somehow survive. 😪 I suppose history often is troubling. Anyway - remarkable country : Ireland, and an enduring and special people. All the best to you.
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Many thanks for your kind words. Keep up the excellent work.
Я так понял из этого видео, что эта винтовка автоматически ставится на предохранитель после каждого выстрела. Можно ли отключить автоматический предохранитель? Спасибо за вашу прекрасную коллекцию. С уважениеи!
Had a couple .303 caliber 1905's. Fantastic rifles, my favorite straight pull.
Glad you had them - extraordinary.
I shoot cb caps, shorts in the back yard so i have one of these. Also i have heard many arguments about tightening locking...if you simply hammer the top edge at end of the barrel locking lug...ten seconds of work. If you go to far just file or stone the surface. No solderd shims or punch marks on side of lock.you can't see this method also the metal is work hardened. If you have to do this several times it gets better. Remember..the tightness is not really an issue. that lock is not going to fail.. The problem is that if is is loose it "bangs" against the lock and excelerates losening.
Great post - thank you.
Oh..also...it the lock is really loose you hit primer off center.i used this method to fit 2 barrels...never ever adapt high pressures barrels to an older receiver the old cast iron frame was offered in 30-30 that was what i mounted on my older iron frame...much good info on line...these are really popular in certain circle
Nice job
I just picked up a H&R 165 Leatherneck listed as a "parts or repair" piece. It was very dirty, but functioning with lots of jams. I disassembled and cleaned everything, repaired the cracked wrist, and everything is moving smoothly. Can't wait to take it back to the range. I also have the 550-1, and speedmaster. .. just to name a few. I enjoyed this, and many other videos. Keep up the good work!
That's the way! So many guns are declared irreparable - yet someone like you can get them running again. The H&R is one of the best - but you likely know that.
Thanks

Back 60 or 70 years ago (yes I am that old) I bought a Tradewinds rifle in 7mm rem. It was pretty cheap and I was poor. It had a cheap stock. It was Huskavorna {sp}. I was disappointed with the accuracy so I took it to a local gunsmith and he told me what I need ed was to put some pressure on the end of the stock pushing up on the bbl. so I had him do it. I didn't have much hope but when I took it to the range it would shop groups of 3/4 inch at 100 yards. I was very pleased shot two moose with it before I lost my mind ant sold it and bought a 338. I have never owned any other rifle that could compare to it. I no longer hunt of course and just gave up shooting since I do not drive very well. But had a lot of fun when I did. Maybe I will tell you all how I got a moose with an extension ladder sometime. Like your podcast.
Thank you for such a fine note. "60 or 70 years ago" - that's a good start : ) I'm glad you shared what happened with the rifle, accuracy and upward pressure. Year ago that was THE thing to do and I saw plenty of accuracy improvement with that method. As you know, it is a harmonics thing. I still like that system. I'd love to hear how you got a moose with an extension ladder. Seems to me a rifle is a better way. 😂 Just kidding of course - please write again. All the best until then.

The original 7mm mag way ahead of its time.
Did the Canadian and the British loads both use cordite . My guess is both did
Yes - both did
Fun fact when your ammo uses cordite and is near a 100 years old and sometimes it miss fires, hold for a minute and wait for it to fizz then go BOOM. Had some 7x57 like that made in 1915
