The thing I most appreciate of Michael’s podcasts are how he lets his guest speak and finish their thoughts. So many others cut them off and talk over them. He’s simply amazing and can’t wait to see him in a new project.
She’s a great actress. She definitely helped elevate Smallville. Compared to most CW shows, they’re missing the gravitas a lot of the actors on Smallville had.
I would say the Early seasons of Arrow and the Flash had the gravitas of veteran actors you mentioned...but ya Smallville is definitely in a league of its own
Seriously Smallville had Annette O'Toole and John Glover.... And John Schneider. OMG. What an amazing cast of tremendous veteran performers you rarely see that nowadays.
Couldn’t agree more, besides the classic It movie I definitely liked Annette I’m the Smallville Series she’s a great actress. This was such a good interview.🧡
Back in 2001, the WB network wasn't as concerned with political correctness or playing the victim card all the time. By the time they changed to the CW, that mentality had changed, and Smallville was one of the few shows for them that managed to keep most of its sanity. I think its a minor miracle that it actually lasted another five years after the network switch - that kind of thing would never happen today.
Annette was so outstanding on “Smallville”. What made that show so great was the acting talent and the scripts. Too many shows forget that special effects and outlandish plots don’t mean much without a talented cast. The characters of Jonathan and Marha Kent were vital to keeping a sense of reality and humanity in show that was so unreal, and that takes talent.
I always think of the "Spirit" episode where Annette did this amazing/hilarious job of playing Martha being possessed by this wannabe prom queen. Yes, it's comedic, but it's also a great showcase of her acting talent.
Annette and John Schneider were perfectly cast for Clark's parents. I got to meet John back in 2014, and I asked him what was different between Annette and Cynthia Ettinger. He said she was more of the "blonde farmgirl" type that Al & Miles had originally wanted, and that they had envisioned both Kents as handling Clark with kid gloves. Raising a teenager with Asperger's Syndrome at the time, John was very blunt with them, and said if they wanted a father who would treat the main character like a spoiled child, they should hire someone else. I guess they respected his honesty, because he was kept and Cynthia was replaced.
@@thelionsshare6668To be fair, Clark not wearing the suit wasn't only Tom's decision. Al Gough & Miles Millar had mandated the "no tights, no flights" policy from the beginning of the show. OMG can’t believe you got Annette O'Toole on the post cast. She is legend she been in so many amazing TV shows and movies. Love when you have guest that are a lot older on your podcast and that have so much to tell and how openly they are with you Michael. Another awesome episode Michael you Rock!!!
Annette O'Toole and Erica Durance are the two women I can never forget because of Smallville. Such awesome and beautiful ladies inside and out. What sweethearts.
I did see the unaired pilot of Smallville years back with a different actress for Martha Kent and the actress that portrayed her said she didn't feel she was right for the role. At that time The Huntress had ended and Annette O' Toole became available to play Martha Kent and reshot the whole pilot with Annette as Martha Kent. I remember watching the documentary "Look-up in the Sky, The Amazing Story of Superman" where both Miles Millar and Alfred Gough said they wanted Annette for the role of Martha Kent badly and praised her so much because she knew alot about the Superman lore and of course was Lana Lang in Superman III.
Michael being all alone even when he was married just proves how our soulmate is someone who is our best friend and how we can waste our time with someone who isn't made for you. Annette and Michael being best friends before they got together is so sweet, one of the greatest building blocks of an amazing relationship. They were there for each other. They loved each others soul and respected on another, and they knew and understood each others work and careers. True partnership, and they have a lot of fun and laughs. Seeing people find love later in life is so sweet, they found it in their late 40s/early 50s! They were meant to be! they are so at ease with one another. I love their love story.
Damn. What a great episode. Really loved hearing her stories. Didn’t realise how extensive her career was. As she was talking I was imdb-ing everything and just being in awe. Loved it. Keep on keepin on withthe awesome eps.
From Copacabana to Superman III, Annette has been one of my favorite actresses of all time. Working with some amazing co-stars over the years (from Barry Manilow to Christopher Reeve) and showcasing her incredible acting talents with her dozens and dozens of various roles - this interview shows her sweet, kind hearted, intelligent and what a beautiful person she really is. Michael this was one excellent interview and I only have one complaint- it was too short! This could have easily been a two- patter! Thank you Annette! We love you! Thank you Michael and Ryan! Bravo!
We ’ve been able to realize that you have a lot of affection for each other. Annette plays Martha with so much truth and the Kent are love and light against the darkness, coldness, and the lovelessness of the Luthor. The episode with her husband is funny and made me laugh a lot. She is a lovely person and this episode was a real joy, thank you so much Michael 👍💘💙💙💙💙
Annette O' Toole from Superman III as Lana Lang, Smallville as Martha Kent (just brought gravitas to the role and brought the mom qualities beautifully), the short lived The Hunter sequel to Steve McQueen's The Hunter which I loved and wish they had continued the series because it was really good. Just seeing the legacy continue on with the wife and daughter and James Remar playing the love interest was great.
Oh my gosh, I absolutely love Annette! She has always struck me me as so lovely and charming. Very down to Earth, grounded and humble. Such a sweetheart. Her legacy stuntcasting as Martha Kent in Smallville, from previously being Lana Lang in Superman 3 was a stroke of genius. And it was neat that Al and Miles (Smallville creators) didn't know this when they initially cast her as she has stated previously. She always had the most heartfelt lines in many of the most heartwarming moments throughout the Smallville series. She was always so perfect as Martha. Brought such warmth and love and made you believe in the great values instilled in Clark. Also, her combination with John Scneider as Jonathan was also perfect and helped to see that. I always love how she does not come off at all like a Hollywood actress and just has this simple humble and graceful elegance to her. Also it's neat that Michael McKean was in Smallville as Perry White, the future editor of the Daily Planet. Such a neat touch. Along with just being so warm and kind. She really is a treasure.

Such a nice surprise to see Annette on this weeks episode, and one of the last main Smallville actors to finally appear on the podcast. A fun episode and Annette seems to be a charming person with a lot of entertaining stories. It's a shame Martha Kent was underutilised on the show but that Jonathan got more screen time. A lot of Annette's scenes ended up as deleted scenes in the later seasons so I don't blame her for wanting to have more time with her family. A brilliant casting decision having her husband play Perry White, and Michael is my favourite Perry. I wish current world events hadn't prevented a full cast get together/interviews for Smallville's 20th anniversary. There were plenty of great interviews but it would have been better if the likes of Annette and Erica Durance etc were included. Smallville needs more recognition as a phenomenal show that not only paved the way for modern day superhero shows but how Superman and his mythology should be explored. There's a reason why so many Smallville actors are still ranked the best/one-of-the-best portrayals of the characters they played.
Annette O'Toole is basically my contemporary, & I've always been aware of her career. For instance, I'm someone who saw "Cat People" when it first came out. This week’s episode is delightful. Annette definitely opened up and had so many great stories. I learned so much about her. I did not realize that she was a songwriter. Each episode gets better and better.
I remember her in Dead by Sunset many years ago. She is always so beautiful and genuine. She is believable and calm and lovely. She doesn't give a reason to roll your eyes at Hollywood.
I'm so glad that Annette is finally on Michael's podcast. It was about time to bring her in.Great actress and such a warm hearted person.I loved Annette and John Schneider in Smallville.Such a big part of the show...Actually i love everything about Smallville. And of course big fan of Inside of you...Keep up the good work Michael😉

Thanks Michael for the great interview! Anette's very down-to-Earth for an actress, very chill, and the fame clearly didn't get to her head. Awesome that you guys still keep in touch.
The story she told about her first date was very beautiful. And knowing that Michael smokes weed and plays guitar makes him extra cool, he was also great on better call Saul en Good Omens.
Michael McKean was great as Perry White in that one episode he appeared in season 3 of Smallville. I wish they had brought him back for more episodes. I loved Michael McKean's guest spot in Batman Beyond where he voiced a character that's a reporter getting sneak peaks in the most unconventional pay possible to expose the secrets. I just loved how the show also talked about tabloid journalism.
Annette is the best Martha Kent there has ever been. I have to be honest that her scenes were some of my favorite because she really anchored the family and gave Clark such support and love. And damn, even though I knew I shouldn’t trust Lionel, I was rooting for them to get together towards the end! Thank-you, Michael, for having her on your show. She is so right that even though it doesn’t feel like it in the moment, being on Smallville really made a positive impact on many people’s lives, including mine. Thank-you for your work, Annette! (And thank-you for doing those commentary tracks back in the day for the DVD sets! I still watch them from time to time and always love hearing the stories of what it was like to film.)
The very first time i saw Annette O'Toole is in the movie Cat People. Her character was working in a zoo. Then Superman 3 as Lana Lang, then Smallville, Virgin River... What ever role she play, Annette O'Toole always makes me feel good inside. Something about her is just... unique. I just adore Annette!
Thanks Michael! Just brightened my day 😊 Also, have you ever considered being a therapist?! People open up to you in such an intimate level...its a real skill to make people feel so comfortable they can tell you all sorts of private things
And, I said agree michael, I totally love your podcast and the fact that you brought 'Martha' on was the bomb. Michael sound like you hadn't watched Virgin River yet. I encourage you to do so it's somewhat like a soap opera and that is what it is but it's also incredibly amazing and Annette is not surprisingly spectacular
I totally agree with you about Michael choosing to be a therapist 👍. He'd make an excellent therapist but he chose acting instead. Oh well. What are we supposed to do? I guess acting is his calling.
Such a delightful conversation so far! Great flow and breadth of topics. Listening to you both ( who have very soothing and calm voices) is giving me a sense of peace and tranquillity. Wonderful way to start my day. Thank you🙏🏻. Have a great week everyone!
Just finished watching Michael with Annette O’Toole and love seeing them together on screen again. I remember the “Cat People” movie, was one of my favourites growing up, the VCR tape wore out from pausing to pool scene. It got me hooked on sci-fi and horror genre movies, the whole cast was great. I loved seeing her on Smallville but was bit sad when Martha Kent became a successful politician and stayed away from the show so much. Clarke still needed his mom’s support… Thanks Michael and I’m going to watch for a James Remar interview.
Thank you very much for this interview. I watched Virgin River series after that. It's so heartwarming. I really loved her character Hope. Annette O'Toole is a brilliant actress.
1:01:45 hearing her describe the early beginnings of friendship and then a slow burn to relationship and long lasting marriage with Michael McKean is extraordinary! I’d watch a movie based on that ✨🤗 Really impressed with the circumstances of them writing that specific song together on the road together. Especially while she was frustrated with having to drive back to Canada during the events of 9/11!
Even if you don't know the guest I highly recommend listening to the podcast! If you want, start with a guest you know and you'll quickly see how amazing Michael is as an interviewer and person. He facilitates a lot of great conversations with his guests in respectful and honest ways that lead to some meaningful conversations while also having laughs and fun too. 🙂 I always take something away from every episode I listen to, if I know the guest or not. ❤️🌹
All of Michael interviews are great but this is probably one of the best ones. We don't hear much from Annette and she's been in so many things she was fantastic and Smallville her in John Schneider were the perfect Mr and Mrs Kent.
I loved Annette on Smallville; she made a great Martha Kent. I especially liked her scenes with both Michael and John Glover; they played off each other perfectly. Thanks so much for posting this interview.

The one thing I loved most about Annette playing Martha on Smallville was the direct connection to the Christopher Reeve Superman franchise!
lol well that was the sad thing about TOM not wanting to wear the suit, which meant no movies. Annette was among those passing the torch.
I liked it whenever they gave Annette the rare scene with Kristin Kreuk. It was cool seeing two generations of Lana Lang together.

@@garymeise673 she's not surprisingly spectacular to me neither #sarcasm
I totally agree with you about Michael choosing to be a therapist 👍. He'd make an excellent therapist but he chose acting instead. Oh well. What are we supposed to do? I guess acting is his calling.
Annette!!!!! Loved watching this episode. Now youve had the whole Kent family on. Cant wait to see what other guest come on
Annette O Toole is pure talent. A wonderful interview Michael. I love this podcast.
I’m so excited you’re talking to Annette O’Toole this time!!
I really enjoyed Annette in danielle steel adaptation jewels she was really great in it and in smallville and in the second season of the punisher
I love Annette O'Toole! Thank you for having her on!
I know Annette, and she is one of the greatest people EVER. And also a genius, underrated actor. I love love love her to pieces.
Such an amazing down to earth woman. Wish her best of luck
I have been hoping you'd have Annette O'Toole on here. Yay! :)
She was my crush in the late 70's, early 80's. One on One, Cat people, Cross My Heart. The perfect combination of cute AND sexy.
Such a delightful conversation so far! Great flow and breadth of topics. Listening to you both ( who have very soothing and calm voices) is giving me a sense of peace and tranquillity. Wonderful way to start my day. Thank you🙏🏻. Have a great week everyone!
You need to checkout Punisher season 2 on Disney Plus where she plays a villain playing Corbin Bernsen's wife and her performance is really good.
She was great in the punisher 💯
That was a lovely conversation. ❤️❤️❤️ What a full and wonderful life and beautiful soul. 🥰 Thank you. 🙏
I can't take the time to watch this so unsure it's shown, but anyone see Annette in The Tammy Wynette biopic? She sang it all. Incredible!
I've been thinking for a while now they need to make a movie where Anette plays Ashley Johnson's mom. They look so much alike.
She's such a lovely person. Loved hearing bout her marriage, so sweet. :)
Love the podcast! This was such a treat this week!!! 🥰
Clarke still needed his mom’s support…
Thanks Michael and I’m going to watch for a James Remar interview.
This Is one of my all time favorite interviews !!! ❤️❤️ her!!
As always, thank you again, Michael, for a great podcast. Good luck with your album.
Thank you very much for this interview. I watched Virgin River series after that. It's so heartwarming. I really loved her character Hope. Annette O'Toole is a brilliant actress.
Very intelligent and well spoken actress.
Love hearing Michael and Annette discussing fun times on Smallville days!
Wow, I've seen her in lots of tv and film, but wow she has been in so so many projects. So amazing.
I always take something away from every episode I listen to, if I know the guest or not. ❤️🌹
I always loved her as Martha Kent and the OG Bev from IT (1990)
She was in IT
All of Michael interviews are great but this is probably one of the best ones. We don't hear much from Annette and she's been in so many things she was fantastic and Smallville her in John Schneider were the perfect Mr and Mrs Kent.
Hands down my Favourite Actress to play Martha Kent.
Such a sweet and genuine woman. Michael McKean is a very lucky man.
Annette is that kind of person who looks good no matter how age she is
Her voice. Always sound so soothing.
Shes such a classy actor. Just a classy lady.
Absolutely one of my fav all time.
And btw she looks fantastic too.
My favorite part of Tuesday 💙 Rock on Michael 🤘 Omg!!! Annette so happy you got her on here When Lex Luthor and Martha Kent reunited 🎇
She was in so much in the 70s and 80s always great seeing her thanks!
She has one of the purest, most beautiful voices I've ever heard in my life.
Oh my Annette is such a lovely person. She is such a quality actress. Thank you Michael for another great show.
Somewhere in Time is one of my favourite movies as well. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen it.
I loved Annette on Smallville; she made a great Martha Kent. I especially liked her scenes with both Michael and John Glover; they played off each other perfectly. Thanks so much for posting this interview.
Always have admired her. Love that she is so real & normal
Wow! I didn’t realize Annette was such a legend!!!! She’s worked with amazing people and done some incredible things in her career! I’m blown away ❤
Lex Luthor and Martha Kent ❤️
I’m so excited for this episode!! Loved Annette O'Toole in Smallville!!! Can’t wait to hear what stories she will share. Thank you so much for getting her on podcast Michael ❤️ Hope you have an amazing week!! Happy Tuesday 💙
Thank you so much for all you do ❤️
This was a fantastic interview -- and I had no idea she'd cowritten Kiss at the End of the Rainbow. That was such a perfect song for that scene, and they were absolutely right to play it straight.
One of my favorites! Such a classy lady all around!
