Balancing your sound; the sound of your voice, when singing means that your vowels will align properly in your exercises and also your songs. If your vowels align in your songs you will be more easily understood when you sing but you'll also get greater flexibility and accuracy of pitch. In other words, riffing will be easier and you'll be able to sing in tune better.
The exercises in this video use short syllables to set up the vocal fold. Here's the catch though: the short breaths in the video will upset that setup, challenging you to be more accurate with your placement in order to get a well adducted sound. These exercises are some of the most efficient and effective ways I have found to balance a singer's tone. Presented here in moderate ranges for Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone voices for starters; these exercises are great for extending range too.
Enjoy!

You unlock a part of my voice I love each time, that I didn't even know was there before!
Hector Cortez Same here. If I warm up in the mornings to one of Jeff’s videos, the rest of my day is full of singing and lovely surprises. It’s been such a healing and calming activity in these dark times.
I agree! I feel like myself when my voice opens up and Jeff helps a lot
Bet you sound great!

this plus baritone warmup session are my "Good morning" videos of the day :)
My favorite among the beginner ones for baritones!
This video is golden. I’ve been developing my voice for a little over a year now and those little he he’s have helped me so much. Because of it I am able to grab air real quick when ever singing or recording music and I start running of air, but have to keep going. And of course it’s going to help a lot when I start performing. Can’t thank you enough Jeff.
That's awesome! FWIW the videos coming out this weekend have that exercise right at the beginning, followed by a new exercise for agility, with a focus on taking breaths efficiently! Thanks for watching and thanks for being here!
Jeff
Wonderful video, I find myself coming backto you for warm up a lot! Thanks!

J'adore tout tes exercices et des informations que j'essaye de comprendre, je te suis depuis un moment je les des pouces bleu a chaque vidéo car tes exercices sont top à quand traduction française pour comprendre d'avantage grand merci à toi
I had vocal damage due to an anterior spinal fusion and have been trying to bring my voice back since 😢. It made my voice higher than it was and now I get called a girl on the phone and my range sucks. Hoping this helps 🙏
My problem with the exercise at 5:38 is not the air, but my mouth/throat gets super dry after doing it for a couple of minutes straight :-D again, great lesson. Thank you!
Thank you🙏🏽
I didn’t stop!
You Rock Marstro
Hi, Jeff, thanks a lot for lessons but as a beginer I would really love to get the sheet music.. than I could play piano and sing .
Wow!
care to specify?
Hi Jeff first thank you. I tried various voice lesson vids, but the ones that have really helped make my voice firm (no shakes, no breaking voice, no air problems) is this exercise + the lip trill vid. I do them every 2 days and I have no trouble singing nor speaking thank you again, great work real generous.
I'm a woman with a 4 octave range. It has been really difficult to get a good workout in my lower range outside of my instructors. This is really helping me get good resonance in my low notes. Thanks!
I was the 1000th like!!!!
Hey Jeff!
I was wondering if there was a surefire way I could find and strengthen my mix voice. I've been trying lately but I'm not quite sure it's working.
THANK YOU JEFF
You're welcome! Thank you!
Jeff

Yes I do!

Was reading an article regarding singing flat recently. It mentioned that one of the (possible) causes what 'not getting out of the consonants quickly'. I wondered if you had any thoughts and advice on this, or if it is covered in any of your lessons. Cheers Jeff
Sure, being too focused on the consonants or not phrasing through them can have that effect, but the action item in that equation is the flow of air. Disrupt that, and the balance of sub-glottic air pressure (support) and vocal fold engagement will change. Usually for the worse.
That being said, while it's good to diagnose problems, there are thousands of ways to do things incorrectly. I would focus on what we're meant to do for good phonation, and correct for it when it's off.
Great comment!!
Jeff
Hey Jeff! During the 2nd exercise I find that whenever I do the small breaths in between I have too much air and feel kinda stuffy, is that normal? Thank you for creating these very helpful videos :)
Sounds as if you're taking too much air in. Just take in what you've used up in the previous syllable.
Great work!

Hey Jeff, when I sing the e's I can hear my tongue kind of changing my sound what do I do? Also would you recommend raising my soft palate while singing these vowels? Last question, how should I be breathing in during the short breaths. Should I be breathing sort appoggio-esk, or should I just do what comes naturally with these short breaths?
Great question! Definitely adhere to appoggio practice on the breathing. As to your other questions, it depends on where those tissues are currently residing. Hard for me to say without knowing where you're at. You have to observe, listen, and compare one vowel's qualities to another, consider your overall singing experience, and then decide on appropriate alignment. That's where recording yourself, or a trusted outside observer, like a singing teacher, can be helpful!

Jeff
Day 3 of lockdown, also I think we need to make it a trend to come visit your videos everyday!
what is brassy voice ?
Hey Jeff I need help here. I'm a baritone and I can't hit E4 my voice fills heavy and shakes when I hit D4.
Check out the 'how to sing high notes' videos. There's quite a few but my overall process is delineated in the three part video series starting with this video:

Hope this 100 comment will help to reach 100k subscribers asap. Thank you for your work!
hi jeff, may i know how to reduce nasal cavity for singing??
I think Jeff mentioned in a video that the -ng sound is really good for the nasal thing cause it hits your nasal and front face area pretty good, do all kinds of exercises that he shows you in this video with the -ng and you will feel it :) Also the BRR with the lips (bee/horse sound) can be really good for buzzing it up :)
I feel this excercise improving my tone afterwards, but it hurts my lower jaw bones while I do it :(
What am I doing wrong? 😔
Hard to say definitively without working with you - but I have suspicions that you're carrying some tension in the muscles at the TMJ joint. Try singing your scales where your mouth starts narrow at the lips then gently opens as you ascend and gently closes as you descend. The key is to stay in motion.
Let me know if that changes anything.
Jeff
Would it be suitable for a baritone willing to extend the range to practice this in the Tenor version?
Thanks!
Yes, the only thing is that the exercises will consider the passaggios of the tenor vocalist rather than the baritone, so they may be somewhat more challenging in their beginnings and endings.
Best!
Jeff
Jeff Rolka what about videos meant for peoples who’s Secundo Passagio is an F4/F#4? I kinda feel like this guy and don’t fit into either camps perfectly. I can’t project below an A2, but I can go all the way down to C#2 with no fry, and a D1 in fry and I start to feel the first Passagio tug most around B3/C4. My voice is very lyrical and soft in its quality, not harsh at all.
Hi can I send you a voice recording? mine to find out what kind of voice I have
Hello and thanks for your question! No, but only because that's not the way this works. The only way to find your voice type is to align your vowels, work on registration event technique, and evaluate, over time, your vocal response throughout the overall range of your voice. Once you've done those things, you'll know your vocal range. Listening to a single recording is just guesswork. There's more info here:
czcams.com/video/P91MkMUGjMQ/video.html
Thanks for your question!
Jeff
Hi, I'm not sure if you'll read this but every time I try to sing my voice feels very closed and I struggle with volume. What should I do?
Evaluate your air! Thanks for watching and writing in!
Volume, the creation of and changes of, are natural consequences of a well-aligned system. This requires good expansion of the rib cage and engagement of the abdominal musculature.
I hope that helps!
Jeff
I'm a professional singer and still can't quite understand the instructions for this particular exercise. I love Jeff's other videos but I'm a lost here :-\
Hi jeff, I'm a baritone but sometimes it is hard for me to sing lower parts like e2 maybe? although i sing lower parts than e2 its just sometimes it's making me hard to sing those notes, can you give me any tips king jeff?
It's almost always about how we approach the notes. Assess how you're singing e2 in a vocalization when it's feeling easy, then assess the differences in your repertoire when it's being difficult. That may show you how you're using your voice differently and having difficulties.
Best!
Jeff
@@JeffRolka thanks sir jeff, actually there is a correction i can actually strike e1* Thank you Sir
Where do we sign up for 1 on 1 lessons?
If you get in touch via www.jeffrolka.com we can sort it out! Thank you!
Jeff
how do you come up with these?
I extrapolate the videos from what works in the lessons I teach.
Best,
Jeff
Is it an inhale after the hee?
Yes! It's an exercise I use frequently!
Best,
Jeff
I feel more control on the last exercise if I do it seated rather than standing...could it be?
could depend on posture. i sit and these exercises cuz i have my head level and facing the screen so i can keep my face forward and through relaxed. If you standing and looking down maybe. Or it could be that you have good sitting posture and sit straight up and maybe slouch more when you stand. Look at you posture doing it both ways and see if you need to make any corrections.
stephen wainright thanks! i appreciate it! but it only happened the first few times, now I do it standing with no trouble, I think it was all about activating the diaphragm all the way.
Lorena Von Dyke well you are welcome. i started trying mkre exercises standing up and its still a valid insight to put out there. so thank you as well
Well said!!
Jeff
Indeed! All of these observations can inform how we use our voices and adjust posture/alignment!
Thank you both for your contributions!
Best,
Jeff
Jeff do you have want videos on breathing properly?
I struggle hitting the higher notes on 7:29. I feel like i strain my throat
Definitely want to make a good transition across the secondo passaggio. If you're not familiar with that technique, have a look here:
