That bike sounds soooooo good.
What I do to change colors on something that your not sure about, especially on bikes I use the pastic dip clear all over it with good 5-6 coats then you can change the color from there. The layers of plastic dip makes it all come right off. So you could have cleared it all with plastic dip then put paint on top of that. I've been doing for years with no issues. Actual paint protects better than the dip plus you can clear it with automotive 2K clear. I've tested after a year in the sun and it comes off to original color. Just a thought for next time. Shame about the paint job being not as expected, always hard to tell with paint. A luminescent orange / red like the new Hayabusa would be pretty darn cool at night. Though obviously not yellow.
