    I really love how in Trump, Payne just kind of loses relevance after the real killer takes the stand. He is kind of just coasting along, not understanding what the hell is even going on. This also kinda fits thematically when you consider the point of Apollo Justice.

    1:24 Poor Payne. Phoenix's debut was so impressive that Payne made him his rival, but in the opposite direction, Payne made such a zero impression that Nick can't even remember facing him at all. Sums up Payne pretty well.

    In Investigations 1, Winston stands outside the crime scene area and doesn't do anything, which can result in some players not being able to notice his presence. I did find it funny was actually being really nice to Edgeworth and Edgeworth not responding to his compliments and instead just inner monologes to himself that he has no clue who he's talking to. However, it does make sence Winston is so nice as both he and Edgeworth are prosecuters.
    In Investigations 2 however Winston has a much larger role. Yes, his niceness towards Edgeworth is again met with him being completely ignored, however when John Doe falls under suspision, Winston is appealing to the emotional side of players by demanding that Doe is imidiatly placed under arrest and later on he's used in order to ragg Swift onder the coals, which eventually results in Horace exiting the plane and attempting to hijack the investigation under orders from the president, only for Doe to then blow his own cover by holding Horace hostage.

    Fun Winston Payne facts:
    1. He is the only character (along with Gumshoe) to have a speaking appearance in every Ace Attorney game (including spinoffs) up to and including the release of Investigations 2 (since Phoenix and Maya do not speak in either Investigations game, and Edgeworth is absent from Apollo Justice). Payne appears in each of these games' first cases as well (including Investigations 1 and 2).
    2. He appears in more cases in the original trilogy (5 cases: 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, and 3-3) than Franziska von Karma (4 cases: 2-2, 2-3, 2-4, 3-5) and Godot (4 cases: 3-2, 3-3, 3-4 [as Diego Armando], 3-5).
    2.5. Every case in Trials and Tribulations features Winston Payne OR Miles Edgeworth (but never both); Payne also appears in one more case than Edgeworth in the game (3 cases vs. 2).
    3. In The First Turnabout, if you signal Larry to tell the truth about going to Cindy's apartment, he will say that he went but didn't see her. Winston Payne objects and says that he has a witness who can prove Larry is lying. Phoenix never objects before this point, which means that Payne's voice is the first one the player hears in the series. However, if you tell Larry to lie and say he never went, Payne never objects; he just calls Sahwit to the stand, where Phoenix's voice when he shouts either "Hold It!" or "Objection!" is the first one the player hears in the series.
    4. In the credits of Trials and Tribulations, Winston Payne is the last character to shout "Objection!" This means that Payne's voice is guaranteed to be the last one the player hears in the original trilogy.
    5. In Turnabout Memories, we learn that Winston Payne has a wife who is implied to be either really beautiful or really ugly (depending on your reading into what he says during Dahlia's testimony about how she met Phoenix). He also has a daughter.

    • @Teknanam
      @Teknanam Před 7 měsíci +3

      Every Ace Attorney game? I know he's present in the original trilogy+Apollo Justice, but Gaspen Payne replaces him in Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, Phoenix vs. Layton replaces him with Flynch (who admittedly is a Payne knockoff), and The Great Ace Attorney uses Taketsuchi Auchi. Winston is still the most prominent Payne though. Gaspen and Taketsuchi only have 2 appearances so far vs. Winston's 4.

    • @YoutGotThisMan
      @YoutGotThisMan Před 7 měsíci +2

      @@Teknanam You're right about Winston Payne not appearing in Dual Destinies, Spirit of Justice, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, and the Great Ace Attorney games, but what I meant in my comment was that Winston Payne appears in every game until Investigations 2. However, compared to each game in the original trilogy and Apollo Justice, where Winston acts as the primary prosecutor for their respective first cases, his roles in Turnabout Visitor and Turnabout Target, the first cases of Ace Attorney Investigations 1 and 2, respectively, are far more limited, as he has only cameos in those cases.
      Granted, while the model used in Turnabout Visitor is undoubtedly of Winston Payne, the nameplate of his textbox simply reads as "Prosecutor" (see czcams.com/video/KSufOGOFYy0/video.html). However, in Turnabout Target, all ambiguity as to his identity is thrown out the window, as he introduces himself as Winston Payne and his nameplate changes to reflect his identity (see czcams.com/video/D42Cexo75a0/video.html).

    Payne is even funnier in the great ace attorney, in which he goes by "Auchi" (get it, cause ouch). The first case against him ends with kazuma literally cutting off his hair samurai style and the second time we see him his hair has grown back but at the end of the case after he loses, he cuts his hair himself and everyone prays solemly as he slowly finishes the job with sad music in the background. Payne is honestly a charming minor character and he only gets better when more prosecutors are introduced, not only does his rather normal presence make these other stand out that much more, but he also ends up one of the few prosecutor that doesn't have any blemishes on him either beyond losing a few times in court, for all purposes, Payne is the MODEL Prosecutor, it's just being a model prosecutor doesn't matter in a setting as wacky as this, he's kinda like Mr Satan from Dragonball Z in a way and I can't hate him at all, the series wouldn't be seen as wild as it is today if we didn't have someone like him here to set a standard.

  • @greshitel_inc
    @greshitel_inc Před rokem +34

    For me, Trials & Tribulations Payne is the best in the entire series.
    As you said, in "Turnabout Memories" he is such a jerk for Mia and really feels tougher then his future version. But he is also very nice to Dahlia that adds a gentle side to his character.
    If you think, Winston is not only fair in his trials, but also he really care about his witnesses and trust them by heart, as you can see in Dahlia and Wellington cases.
    Well, also you miss some little cameos of Payne in T&T, but I think, they are also really important for this character.
    Trial of Luke Atmey was meaningful for AA gallery, and Payne almost nailed Ace Detective. Yeah, we know that Atmey wanted to escape his fault this way, but I think that trial rose Payne in others eyes.
    And don't forget how he defeated Xin Eohp by his own hands!!!

      @DerpyHiro To be fair, Winston was first destroyed by Mia Fey. And after that he was never the same. Even up against Rookie Wright and Rookie Apollo. Same with Gaspen and Rookie Athena.
      And Wright won against him while suffering complete amnesia.
      Although to be fair, both Apollo and Athena had THE Ace Attorney there to mentor them. So maybe Kazuma's curse just happens should an Auichi ever oppose a Naruhodo or their mentee in court.
      Now I wonder what might happen should an Auichi actually become a mentor or mentre of a Naruhodo. But considering the long history of Prosecutor and Defense Attornies in each line respectively. Not likely.

    I really like Payne and his role in the story plus how more comedic they make him as the games progress. I do think he fairly smart because of his experience and his title of rookie killer really shows his knowledge and ability to take on newbies which could also show his smarts in different ways like picking his cases with him wanting to take on some more simpler cases with seem a lot more open shut and while also facing less experienced attorneys. Do you recommend Professor Layton games if Im a AA fan?:
      Yes I think a lot of AA fans end up liking Professor Layton. That being said, they are quite different. Professor Layton is about solving puzzles so it's quite different gameplay wise. Some AA fans do not like the stories in the Layton games but I would still give it a shot. Just go into it blind with no expectations

      Trials and Tribulations
      Also idk If I heard correctly but you would review turnabout serenade at some point:
      That was only if a lot of people asked for it. You're the first person who brought it up so far so I probably will not make that in advance since it looks like the demand is not there. Still, I am also trying to cover Apollo Justice late this year so I'll make the Turnabout Serenade video once it's time to review that game.
