    As a drummer, I can tell you this song is required listening. It’s one of those songs that a lot of drummers point to when studying rhythmic patterns. And it’s very cool song on top of it!

    The golden years of Genesis with Hackett and Gabriel. Seeing the live performances with Peter Gabriel gives this and all the other early Gensis a whole different dimension.

    3 weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing Steve Hackett and his band do this entire album live. I was 3rd row middle aisle seat in a small theater in Salem OR, it was incredible. The first half of the show was his solo stuff and his encore was Firth of Fifth with Los Endos. Truly epic concert.

    1972 and Genesis was concerned about the course of our Earth was taking. Collins was a master of rhythm, arrangements, and transitions.

    Classic early Genesis. The title is from a John Keats poem. Good to see those expensive English educations not being wasted. In fact the early songs are full of literary and classical references.

    I could imagine the opening mellotron section being played on some huge church organ for some sort of ceremonial reason. Possibly the one where a shot gun wedding was involved :).

      @@rk41gator It is a great opening song and a grest intro to early Genesis. Still stands as one of the most difficult to play as a drummer, the whole figure sits in 6/4, but of course, is played as a stacatto, 'morse code' pattern w offbeat accents in 16ths, so, 24/16 per measure, and to make matters worse, Phil is hitting the snare and ride cymbal in unison while flamming the accents... ridiculous!! Lol
      And it HAS to feature Peter with the crazy bat wings on his head and the rainbow cape!!

    • @rk41gator
      @rk41gator Před 7 měsíci

      @@markjohnson4217 It is always nice to hear from a drummer Phil's playing. I am a non-professional musician but not a drummer, yet I can hear the sophistication Collins has. His off-beat grace notes and his variety of beat patterns without losing the rhythm just amazes me.
      He is so rock solid. With so much going on in their music you need that glue to hold it all together. Phil was perfect for this band.

    • @markjohnson4217
      @markjohnson4217 Před 7 měsíci

      @@rk41gator Yup, he was one of my favorite rock drummers, there was something sharp and brisk in his approach, and like Bonzo, his footwork was where the real magjc was coming from, so to me Phil was like Bonzo after a few cappacinos!! Kick drum pushing everything along, right in the pocket, and crazy hard-hitting thwacks that could wake the dead!! Lol..

    only recently got into Gabriel Era Genesis - born a bit too late. and my good god, am i ever glad i did. seriously, it is some of the best music i have ever heard. if not THE best. in fact, right now, i think it IS the best. and i have impeccable taste, so it's not a low bench mark 😁

  • @sarahlouise7163
    @sarahlouise7163 Před 4 měsíci

    i think the only way to appreciate the genius of Early Genesis is to play it repeatedly until it gets into your head. say, pick 6 of the best-rated, and put them on repeat. once that happens, you're in. it's like a club. you will never just "get it" on the first time of listening.

    Phish played this at Genesis' R&RHOF induction. I think there were some confused looks and restless bums in the audience by the time they finished so they quickly followed up with "No Reply at All". 😄 But Steve Hackett (who's been playing this every night on his current tour of the full Foxtrot album) has talked about how back in 1972 they were playing these big, cavernous spaces down in Italy (the Italians fell for this kind of music before anyone else did), and those big opening Mellotron chords were so huge they would just fill the place. You can imagine how it was quite the mood-setting. By the way, JP -- Genesis worked with the same producer on this album as the first Queen album: John Anthony.

    Just my opinion but this is the kind of stuff I would love to see daily. I am not and in the 70's was not a Genesis guy but more of this and I could be persuaded. Just about anything from the 70's and these classic bands is gonna beat out by a mile (minus Queen) the other stuff you got going on, on the channel lately. Yes in my opinion would keep you happy and busy for a while but keep going on the Queen also for a while. Cheers

    I must be first. This is unbelievable. I'm a big Genesis fan but I can't believe I don't have this album, possibly on FM 45-50 Years ago I might have heard this song. At this point I'm fairly convinced you can't beat the Peter Gabriel era. Some of this it's hard to follow the cadence. However I think it's great anyway.
