  • "Take a spectacular, yet challenging 820-mile ride across the south-eastern region of California. Rugged two-track and remote dirt roads lead riders through majestic canyons, rocky riverbeds, and sandy washes of California’s famous deserts and national preserves, including a dream ride in the Mojave Preserve. This is the first Wintertime BDR."
Here is the full length version of my CABDR-South adventure. If it feels like it jumps around a bit that is because it does. I did the first two sections in April and finished the rest in November.
    Hello!
I'm Brady, AKA Mountainman, I've been a soldier, ski bum, police officer, government worker, photographer, and all around nomad. Now I travel on my motorcycle, make videos, and share them with the world. Along the way I do dumb stuff off road, camp, fly drones, take pictures, learn about culture and history and do my best to take you with me.
In early 2022 I set off on my motorcycle Yennefer (2021 Tenere 700) for an adventure with no set destination or timeline. Come along with me and let’s see what will happen as I try to ride until I can't.

Bigger bikes make this stuff really hard - I did this on a 500 exc and man, it seems so easy compared to what I've seen on video with the bigger bikes!

Huge props for keeping it real and showing your vulnerability. This video helps make informed decisions about whether this ride is doable - especially with big bikes (and I'm going to say no - definitely not a big bike route unless you have a shit ton of support with you). That brings up another point. Big props also for having the chones to do this by yourself. Especially after the ankle mishap. (ps thanks for filming the process of how you extracted self and bike). Way to persevere dude.

Watched your videos for a long time now and enjoyed them a lot but this was brutal watching you try to ride the sand and your wreck. I would highly suggest a training class with some one who can teach you how to ride deeper gravel and sand as there is a real technique to it that would help you get through those trails much easier. Good stuff showing all your rides and hope you keep doing the adventure riding.

Thanks! Impressive perseverance and attitude on an epic and challenging route. For my skills on the more challenging BDR sections, I would forego camping and the comfort of a middleweight adventure bike and ride a sub-400 pound dual sport and do the hotel thing to minimize load. Admire those who take on these routes with the bigger bikes.

When in deep loose gravel or deep sand, it helps to get the tools out and adjust the fork preload all the way up, and drop the rear sag as low as it will go by dropping the preload.
Your front end is plowing badly and thats no fun.
Does adjusting the preload make the plowing disappear? Nope. But it makes it much more manageable

Toucans, I've used tech 7s before. I don't think any boot would have made much of a difference. I think the stiffer boots (tech 10 etc) might have even caused a knee injury from the stiffness. I also like the waterproofing so I don't have wet feet all the time.

Off-road you don’t really need to seat bounce much, but can use the technique in g-outs with a bank to climb… That’s pretty much it. You ever notice when people are stuck on a climb and start to paddle while sitting they don’t really get anywhere? It’s because traction is made with your weight on the pegs, watch erzberg, they always start with at least one foot on a peg to make traction. You may see a pro looking like they are sitting at times, but they likely aren’t, and still supporting almost all their weight with their leg, loading pegs.
