  • Cork, Waterford & Wexford all in one.
Newfoundland is considered to be the most Irish place outside of Ireland with it’s similar dialect, music, traditions & culture in general. Also being the only place outside of Europe with an Irish name “talamh an éisc”

I’ve been to NFLD 18 times over the last 25 years. The accent has been declining with the fact it’s now a global world. It’s still thicker in the outports. I wouldn’t say it’s dying out just transitioning a bit. My MIL who’s 93 still has her accent strong. Going for another visit in two weeks. First time since 2019 because of the Covid fiasco. I’m going to make a point to listen for the accents and see if they truly have changed with the younger generation. Great province. Everyone should visit. They don’t call it Gods country for nothing. 🤩

My god I miss living in Newfoundland. My whole dad/stepmoms side of the family is from there. Only had the chance to live out there for a bit from age 18-22 but I’d move back out there in a heartbeat. Best years of my life to be honest. Just driving around with friends, finding a nice spot to park and go for a walk or swim. Getting drunk on George street and getting a slice of pizza in the wee hours of the morning. I’d give anything to go back to those days, which merely ended 5 years back. Feels like a lifetime :( I used to live in Holyrood and go to school in St. John’s. Those early morning drives with the ocean beside me are something I’ll never forget…

I would say the accent amongst Newfoundlanders of certain generations in specific areas of the island is very Irish influenced and very similar if not identical to accents in Ireland. The younger generations tend to veer more towards general Canadian accents with some touches of distinct Newfoundlerisms.
