Bimanual examination is an essential skill for medical students, junior doctors and nurses. It's a routine examination performed in Women's Health care and plays an important role in the detection of gynaecological pathologies such as cancer.
In this video, Dr Glyn Estebanez covers everything you need to know to perform this key skill in both clinical exams and in real-life, using the Female Gynaecology Training model by Limbs and Things UK @limbsandthings (limbsandthings.com/uk for more info).

I had this recently. Uncomfortable, but very necessary. Thankyou for explaining this procedure so well.
It hurts?
@@molaxedits1911 yes its hurt too much
Bimanual exams are not useful screening for healthy woman and can be harmful especially when women were victims of sexual abuse. Bimanual exams are not effective way to diagnose ovarian cancer, STDs or HPV. Bimanual exams can be so anxiety inducting and painful that they can cause healthy woman to avoid medical care altogether.
@@molaxedits1911 Probably especially this one having a male do it.Even as a male this should not be performed by a male. Maybe je studied it but anyone can do that. But he doest have female genitalia
It doesn’t matter if the doctor is male or female as long as they are fully qualified to do the
procedure.
You are a very good teacher thanks 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you! 😃

I have one of these tomorrow. Dreading it but at least I know what to expect 😕
was it ok
@@ototaylor4567yes it was OK, felt so much better after going and knowing everything was OK. It was worth it, not painful just uncomfortable, mostly the mental aspect of having someone examining you. They do this all the time though so try not to feel too self conscious.
I've had uteral atony since giving birth to twins 8 years ago and have never been able to regain strength.

Pelvic exercises tighten, so does jogging, any types ofexercise that move the vaginal area will tighten.

had to do this on my mum today she absolutely loved it
What happens if your gyno goes from the sliding in bit to suddenly going straight to really roughly doing the 'palpating the ovaries ' almost like trying to ram curled fingers into my stomach from the inside etc move? This example seems to be different from the male gyno I saw and it felt wrong to me because he watched my face when he rammed his fingers in and up. I don't want to make assumptions at all but his demeanor changed when I told him I had never had sex before during the conversation pre examination. Should there have been a nurse in with me?
Ideally, yes. You should have had a female chaperone with you. I'm sorry for what you went through 😢. It sounds terrible. 💔
Oh boy, I hope you have switched to a female OB-GYN. Absolutely, a nurse should have been in the exam room. I wouldn't see a male OB for the all the money in the world.
@@zethraelofteldrassil3149 not without a female nurse at the very least.
Absolutely yes. Irrespective of your sexual history, there should have been a female present when he was doing the exam. And "ramming" his fingers in is a huge red flag.
I want to be an Obigyne Doctor
Would not even take vacations
no you dont
tried it on my mother she liked it but i didnt
Hi
This looks very painful do you have to get this done ?
yes, women have to get this done and it depends on the person if its painful, some just find it uncomfortable others find it painful.

Christ, the idiots in the comments. Yes this type of exam, usually along with a pap smear and simple breast exam is part of PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE. It should be done every few years (unless you're experiencing abnormalities, so talk to your gyno). If you find the right doc it is obviously uncomfortable but does not hurt! These kinds of exams check for abnormalities you may not otherwise notice. It also does not take near this long, as this is slowed for educational purposes. Ladies if you're nervous take your best friend. Or find a doc you feel comfortable with first. It's okay to "shop around".
You’re living in the past. A bi-manual exam is only indicated when warranted The ACOG guidelines are as such
I realize this comment is a year old, but pelvic exams and bimanual exams are no longer indicated regularly, only on an as-needed basis (paps are every 3-5 years though). These examination can also range from mild to very painful, depending on a multitude of factors (provider skill, past traumas, infections, vaginismus, endometriosis, the list goes on). Blanketly saying that they are never painful undermines patient experiences and leads to medical distrust. Yes, they can be important, but they can also be overused and unnecessary. The literature also finds ultrasound to be a much more useful and accurate measure for visualizing the uterus and ovaries.

WTF 😳😳😳 2:40
Seems like a very unnecessary exam unless the patient has been having some kind of symptoms. Probably got started decades ago when all Gyno's were men who quite enjoyed performing this useless exam. Like most things, once it becomes "something we've always done" it's hard to ever get rid of it.
Do you have a medical degree?
It's actually a very important exam to perform. Just like a male genitalia or digital rectal exam is important to perform on a man. Like the guy stated in the video, this is not an exam performed regularly on women as part of their 'yearly' checkup. It's an exam indicated when a patient has symptoms or concerns that have to do with that region. We dont keep things around in medicine just because "we've always done it". We keep things like this exam around because they provide us with important diagnositc intel that can save a patient's life. Not everyone has money to get imaging, not everyone wants to get irradiated on if they dont have to. Medicine is no longer a place where the doctor tells you what's wrong with you and the patient has to listen and obey what the doctors say. Our number 1 priority is patient safety and care. We constantly perform research on the effecacy of current day practices to ensure that what we are doing (especially when it is as invasive as this) is necessary, is beneficial and outweighs any risks that performing the procedure may come with.
For someone who has a uterine prolapse, it's extremely important
actually in my country doctor do not touch the patient, let alone sensitive examination like this :) so your argument are not true
I did not grow up going to doctors so when I started having abdominal pain I didn't do anything about it for quite a while, although I worried a lot and wondered what the issue was, later I finally talked to a doctor about it and she had a CT scan done and found that I have multiple fibroids, so now while I didn't want to I ended up going to a gynecologist, then to an advanced gynecologist for the first time in my life, they have all been very nice and while I'd prefer to not have this issue I am grateful there are people who know how to help, and it's by far not a useless examination. I guess it's easy to say such things if you aren't the one with the issue.
No wonder men go into these fields of medicine.
Try City Med.. Don’t be silly.

I think a woman clinician would be more appropriate for this test!!
Ok 1st of all why is a male explaining this. 2nd why is a male performing this. While the other woman watches. Shouldn't she be doing this. I do believe she's more familiar with the anatomy. Male Drs. stick to men's health and women stick with women's health
