    Edit: as a teenage girl I should at some point fairly soon go to a gynecologist. A couple years ago I was pretty certain I had a yeast infection and wanted to go to the gynecologist. My mom already had an appointment for herself so she asked her doctor about me coming in. The doctor told my mom it would be traumatizing so I should go to my pediatrician instead. I didn’t want to do this because I felt I would be more comfortable with someone who looks at genitalia all day everyday. I ended up never going. So something like this definitely makes me feel a lot better about my inevitable future😂🖤

    I've heard a lot of horror stories about male gynecologists being inattentive and dismissive towards female problems, so I've always been somewhat sexist when selecting my gynecologist. I'm so glad to have seen this video - Dr. Blake was very professional and caring, and it made me realize that a doctor's gender doesn't have any bearing on skill. I love my current gyno, but the next time I move cities I will not automatically eliminate a doctor based on gender. Thank you for helping me see that my fears were based on prejudice, not fact, Lindsey!!

      amagicbeanbuyer opposite here : D
      When I learnt, that my stately, very, very prude grandma actually goes to a male gynecologist, it blew my mind!
      But in general, I go for online ratings and have never been disappointed. Due to frequent moving I had to find a new gyn about evere 3-4 years. One time I had a female gyn, who was a... horse. She was really good and educated me well and explained things about my body. she was one of those doctors where you feel good about asking even very emberassing questions - super important! But she was very rough during the exam. She never hurt me, but it was an uncomfortable experience.
      Now I have a very neat old gentleman (simply because he is insanely well rated in the area i live) - and justly so. Same thing: uncomfortable questions are perfectly fine to ask, he's very attentive and careful and experienced.
      One thing is very odd though. He moved to new rooms, which are very fancy and decorated with modern art. one of the art pieces is the shape of a woman in 3d coming out of a metal canvas and she's looking... very happy with her naked body - lounging, presenting herself. it's racy. And the sculpture has a prefect victoria's secret body. It is obviously abstract, has cutouts and is not meant to be a real woman, but... this prefect shape is the thing you see before going into the exam room. I am pretty sure, this is actually meant to make people feel more comfortable, but it could have the opposite effect on people who are insecure about their body shape.

    • @jvblackwater
      @jvblackwater Před 8 lety +3

      amagicbeanbuyer You never know, actually. They say male doctors are usually more polite and considerate, but I wouldn't go to one of them, because... ugh! However, in my country (Russia) you may experience all the circles of hell in a female gynaecologist's consulting room: slut-shaming, homophobia, have-babies-and-it'll-pass lectures, have-penetrative-heterosex-and-it'll pass lectures, rude and painful treatment, etc etc. The first time I went to the gynaecologist I was 22 - I was THAT scared by horror stories from both IRL and the web. This doctor is also my mum's doctor - so I wasn't even very nervous because I knew she was good. There weren't even any surprized comments on my being a virgin at this age - and there could have been, although it's clearly inappropriate for a doctor. But I would never risk going to a strange doctor - it's fraught with psychological trauma for the rest of my life.

      amagicbeanbuyer I admit, I prefer female GYNs, given the choice. I've known women who would "NEVER let another woman touch me down there." It's really not that bad and it's good for you.

    • @ComplicatedSalad
      @ComplicatedSalad Před 8 lety +3

      thisisthedelia I'd say that what Lindsey described is pretty on point. Sometimes I will experience minoring cramping afterward as a result of the cervical scraping, but not always and it resolves itself quickly. Some women could have a disorder that causes them to experience discomfort or pain when inserting objects into the vaginal canal, if that is the case, I would understand describing the process as painful.

Watching this video, while it was hard to watch like I'm shakey right now.. it also really helped remove a bit of the irrational fear? Because its tied to my CPTSD it's not going to go away just because of this one video but seeing it happen to someone else and being safe as I watch and seeing how easy and quick it can be, it's amazing. Mentally, I know that there isn't anything to really be afraid of. I love my gyno and trust her deeply. But the fear of the unknown (i.e. sensations, pain?) surrounds the pelvic exam for me. Many around me told me it was the most painful thing that they had experienced "down there" besides child-birth. My mother, on the other hand, says about the same as you, Dr. Doe. Little crampy and cold, but other than that, routine. I would assume that those around me who said it was painful beyond belief had underlying issues. All of this to say, thank you for being so open and willing to share your knowledge and experiences with the Internet. A similar video about colonoscopy would be very useful, too. I had to have one a couple of years ago and really had so little idea what to expect. As it turned out it was quite a surreal experience with very kind and lovely practitioners (I think there were three of them) and we spent most of the time chatting about nail varnish colours in between "...and just turn a little bit to your left...". What had started out as a very daunting prospect became actually a very pleasant experience.

    Also just a side note, my experience is an example of why shows like sexplanations and people like Lindsey and her team are SO important and need support and to be shared with the world. I was going into a brand new experience. I didn't know what was going to happen, how to prepare or if I should be afraid. This video made it seem like a normal and healthy thing. It made it relatable. If Lindsey can do it and not be scared and be relaxed so can I. And hearing what the dr is going to do and more importantly hearing from Lindsey herself how it actually felt was really informative and comforting. I know what to do and expect now. I cannot emphasis enough how important this channel is to my life and how much I hope that as many people as possible get to experience and learn from it.

    This is going to be SO helpful to SO many girls. I think a lot of young women push this off because they think it's going to be terrible and painful, so you showing that it's REALLY not that bad will give a lot of people the courage to go in.
    It's also really important to have a good doctor. I like how he goes in like it's no big deal- cause to him, it really isn't. For my last exam, my OBGYN went from joking around right before the exam to speaking to me as if I was a frightened baby bunny in like, 2 seconds, haha. It's also really important that they tell you what they're doing as/before they're doing it.

      Unfurtunately, many doctors are a little too impatient when we try to explain our problems :S If the problem stays, you shouldn't hesitate to go see another doctor at a different clinic! It's a hassle but if you feel it might be a physical/health problem, you deserve a second opinion on the matter.

      +KatrinaKingsOfLeon I worked for a gp for 8 years. Not every doctor is a fit with every patient. If you find a doctor isn't paying attention to your concerns and you don't have a good relationship, the best thing to do is find another doctor. It doesn't necessarily mean the doctor you were seeing is bad, just that he or she is not the one for you. For these issues, it's best to find a gynecologist that you connect with. I talk to my gynecologist about genital health AND emotional health. I talked to her about my relationship that ended and how devastating it felt to be single again at almost 30. She listened to me and gave me an view on how to look at a relationship that wasn't healthy. It's so important for a woman to have a doctor she feels comfortable with. I hope you find that.

    Every doctor assumed because I am a very large person (more than 350lbs), that I would need a large speculum, but my last doctor finally realized that it was nowhere near the right size, and got me the really small one and although it still was uncomfortable, it was a LOT better.

The pap itself feels like a pinch or a cramp but the swabs don't really hurt at all. as well, for many young people, the cervix might bleed a little the first couple of times you get it done (you'll see blood on the little brush and maybe some spotting in your underwear). my doctor said this was completely normal though. good luck, everyone!
