My dad was always like "What is this devil worshipping nonsense?" My response was this "But dad, this song is based on one of your favorite books by Lovecraft." My dad's expression was pricelss.
A lot of metal is devil worshiping nonsense sadly, this isn’t
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 no it is not. More political and about war.
Battery is named after Battery St where the guys played. And the song is about the feeling of aggression and violence you get when you get when you rock the f*** out. Master Of Puppets is about how anything can control your life if you let it. The thing that should not be is about Cthulu (Ktulu), Welcome Home (Sanitarium) was an idea that was thought up by Hetfield and Ulrich from watching the movie "One flew over the coo cuckoos nest". Disposable heroes was not only about soldiers being bread to become killing machines, but also about football players that get injured and are treated like disposable heroes.( That was from the Hypnotizing Power video about Master of Puppets) Leper Messiah is about the crooked nature of televangelism, and named after the lyric "like a leper messiah" from a David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust) song. Orion is a journey, thats all I can say about thay masterpiece. And Damage Inc. Is about the nature of the metal fan and how we are all bread as one. So basically you come full circle with Battery and Damage Inc. The entire story I get outta MoP is when you come to the world of metal. You start out with the energy of 1000 men. You then become addicted to anything that takes you where you wanna go. You then read Lovecraft books that make you insane. You join the military, or a football team, become religious, take a trip into the orion nebula, then when you get back to earth you are more stronger than you were because now you're a huge metal family called Damage Inc.
@@MetallicAAlabamA In my opinion that is a accurate assessment of the Metallica album Master Of Puppets. I have some nephews that actually like the song Orion.
Have your dad check out "The Color Out Of Space" by Ningen Isu.
The Seattle 89 version of this song is a MUST. The studio version is great, but the live version… getting chills from just thinking about how possessed Hetfield looks and sounds in it.
it's a Cliff Burton song dude, the album version will always be better than any other bassist to play it.....no disrespect !!!
Absolute must watch. I love it!
AGREE
The entire Seattle show is awesome. Battery is off the hook. The bass solo into master of puppets is amazing.
You are correct sir
Lex's guttural, "YEAH!" at 6:20 was so metal it startled me!!! Nice!!!
Sound really hetfield - 'ish' isn't it
Same!
I love it when talented artists adapt great literature into song. Zepplin did it with Tolkien and here Metallica does the same with the works of H. P. Lovecraft.
Lovecraft was Cliff's favorite author. And I love the fact how they have continued to apply Cthulu (Ktulu) to their music catalogue.
Anthrax with Stephen King and Judge Dredd.
Yeah its great hey? Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, Nightwish are a few others who have done an amazing job with this.
Ok
Iron Maiden... Rhime if the Ancient Mariner.
In this episode of Brad & Lex, Lex is immediately powered up by the drums and literally couch hops into a "metal bop" with added air guitar as Brad's approach is a bit more apprehensive and analytical but his signature "side to side sway" shows no compromise before being slightly overcome by Lex's 1 woman mosh pit.
Epic
Brad’s little side to side sway is classic lol, that shit is hilarious.
Couldn't have said it better!!!
🤣
🤣 amazing
Brad's reaction of Lex on air guitar/drums is priceless.
Kirk Hammett's solo in this song is my favorite in any Metallica track. It's not as epic or well structured as the ones on their mega anthems, but it's sudden, unhinged, and unpredictable. Its like a quick taste of what Metallica would be like with Dimebag Darrell as their lead.
Same, one of my favorite songs, and definitely the solo is one of it's gems.
Fun fact: Kirk improvised the solo in this song.
Totally agree. It sounds deranged and it fits perfectly with the song. Say what you want about Kirk but he writes some amazing solos.
it did exactly what it was supposed to do - amazing.
Agreed. That lead was controlled chaos.
This song and Call of Ktulu are both inspired by the writings of HP Lovecraft, as others have said. He was a writer from the 20s and 30s and bridged science fiction with cosmic horror. He made a name for himself in amateur journalism, which was sort of like the internet of the day, in that anyone could contribute their writing. A few names rose to the top and his was one of them. His main thing was that mankind was just a speck of dust in the infinite universe, and alien entities with godlike powers ignore us completely until we draw their attention. The cosmic horror part was how indifferent these forces are to man. They are neither good nor evil but are nonetheless very bad for mankind. The line “Hybrid children watch the sea” is probably a reference to Lovecraft’s story “The Shadow Over Innsmouth.” It’s one of my favorite short stories. Lovecraft influenced everyone after him, like Stephen King, who every now and then drops some Lovecraft references in his work. The recent series Lovecraft Country is of course inspired by him and the fact he was a notorious racist.
This!
This Also. 👍
Still My favorite Metallica song because of the subject matter.
You forgot to mention rwo other songs related to Lovecraftian themes... 'All Nightmare Long' (based on the Hounds of Tindalos) and 'Dream No More' which generally refers to Cthulhu herself.
Personally, I hope they do another themed song on their next album.
@@uoabigaillevey 👍😁👍
I haven’t heard those songs yet. I stopped after St Anger. I’d heard other people talking about 4 songs having to do with Lovecraft and wondered what other two they were talking about. Now I know!
Last night I was listening to a bootleg of Metallica in Japan in 88. Sounded a bit off as it was an audience recording, but the two shows were fantastic! Pre-91 Metallica is the best to me.
I was a sophomore in high school when this hit
I’m a 50 yr old cat now
This song still stomps
Lex Lil sis, you caught it quick like we did when it came out
When someone new jumps in it’s a victory for us metalheads y’all one too 👍🏼🎄
GOOD ONE!!!!!
I just turned 51 dude same for me totally. this band has been in my life since the first time I heard them...9th grade on the school bus going home for the day my friend passes me his walkman and it was set for Leper Messiah. ive never let this band out of my sight and ears since. Love seeing people react and get it...the first time to something that was just a small part of my lifes soundtrack. plus metalheads were always looked at as stoners and not too bright growing up in Virginia. its not satanic its scary melodic with rough fast edges you can cut yourself on when you need to. its extremely intelligent music not for the masses with deep taboo subjects no other genre covers. I love her reaction when it hit that terrifying solo Kirk slays into. so wicked.
Lex just gets it. She has the proper reaction to what is probably Metallica's heaviest song.
Lexliscious
Funny, I've seen so many (good looking) black girls get into metal over the years. Love 'em.
yeah, I think so ,too
sad but true
dyers eve
I really really really hope you guys make it to a Metallica concert!
Absolutely, 30 years ago would be good
Maybe the Metallica of the past. Not the shitstorm they call a band now.
Probably my second favorite Metallica tune of all time. So heavy, the musicianship is so on point
The whole thing is unbelievable. Their best album by an absolute mile. (Very close to being the best thrash album of all time... but Reign in Blood just edges that.)

@@joshuamasserant8215 Fan of millennial Brazilian "thrash". Opinion can safely be ignored.
What's you're favourite or does it alternate?
@@davidh7126 my favorite is Disposable Heroes
The Whole “MASTER OF PUPPETS “ LP is a MASTERPIECE.
It is about Cthulhu from H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos... made Creative Commons so a lot of authors have extended it over the years. It influenced most modern horror authors in one fashion or another one. Cthulhu the Great Old One dreams in the sunken city of R'lyeh and it is said one day it will rise, he will awaken, and we are doomed... The song hopefully makes more sense now. Also in the Cthulhu mythos people often go insane from the things they learn about the great old ones.
"Metallica gives you heavyyyyyy!!!!!!!"
I feel like im hearing these songs from my youth for the first time all over again watching their reaction vids
Gaining a renewed and reinvigorated appreciation all over again
Tip: Headbanging is up and down; just like nodding “Yes” with tremendous enthusiasm and rage! Then go in circles and whip your hair! Watch old live Metallica videos for a step by step
She's got better moves, I've seen her legit start to pull off the double dip like an old head. Being perfectly honest, I think she had to restrain herself, to keep from hurting or frightening Brad, and it threw her off.
But yeah, if she got to watch more concert and official videos of metal instead of the lyric videos all damn time...still, she has progressed quite a bit from the earlier stuff in her headbanging skillz.
P
I love this song. It’s about Cthulhu. It’s inspired from the H.P. Lovecraft book. Although, I think all of the songs from the first four albums are amazing works of art and composition.
Edit: You should listen to this back to back with The Call of Ktulu from the Ride The Lightning album, in order by album.
I never got in to the lyrics of Metallica, Just the sound of James Hetfield's voice as an instrument and the raw energy of the sound of the band. It was Huge and brought out the rage I was already feeling. Kind of like a pressure relief valve.
Word.
I think James would say you're doing right since he typically writes the music first and then comes up with the lyrics. As with the classical composers, it's all about the music.
Maybe it’s about time you opened your ears and listened
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 We'll leave that to people like you who are in search of meaning in their lives and insist on looking for it in the dumbest places. 🤪
YOU GO LEX !!!!! LOVE WATCHING YOU GROOVE !!!
The solo from the live version of this song on the S&M album they did with the San Francisco symphony sounds so awesome to me. I always rewind it like 4 or 5 times whenever it comes up on my playlists.
36 years later and this song still goes hard and is still one of the
heaviest songs you'll listen to. Especially when they did it live in the
80's and 90's.
Thanks Brad so much for not pausing, you have no idea how much fun it was watching Lex during this song. I love you guys, this channel makes me so happy.
This song is even better live ..the Seattle 1989 concert is legendary ..Lex was in her zone!!
Get that girl to a METAL SHOW! 🤘🤘🤘
This is one of my favorite Metallica songs. I frigging love this song . God I miss the 80s we partied so hard to this album
And justice for all seems appropriate. One of there most exquisite albums by now..
I think Brad would like the message in it too. Also in Eye of the Beholder.
And I could bet that lex would like the musical structure of it. Both music and message are well matched from Blackened to Dyers eve..
I love it when Brad says "could be dugs" Classic. And what a classic Metallica song 🤘
music is awesome and im so glad to see poeple loving it, i wish i could hear it for the first time again how much power " metallica " plays with it moves me
I remember I brought this album for music class back in 88 in elementary school and everybody was so like weirded out by it
the live version in seattle concert is second to none
Really gotta do those and justice for all reactions by now, you guys are ready
This album is their masterpiece .
Hands down you guys have the BEST channel on CZcams. Love your reaction videos
Yes, Metallica from 83 to 91 will not disappoint!
Oh, this is a good one. The title reminds me of The Call of Ktulu because both seem to reference my favorite horrror writer and creator of the Cthulhu Mythos, H.P. Lovecraft.
GET THAT GIRL TO A METAL SHOW!!!
No damn way y’all got every song I can think of for Metallica. Love it just found the channel so I got a lot to watch
I love Metallica!! Everything is so flawless. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert last month and they blew the doors out.
I would love to take Lex to a concert. She'd be a blast!
Your energy is everything ! Keep head banging 🤘🏽
Arguably the heaviest sledgehammer riff to the chops ever put to vinyl.
I think you two have the best reaction vids...You compliment each other very well...Lex youre awesome!!
In guitar intro, i see the hell place. Seattle 89 and S&M are fking awesome, so underrated song...
Been saying it always. This song Seatrle '89 is the best live performance ever!
I didn't realize Lex could play so many air instruments. Very talented
The S&M version of this song is my fav. Cause he laughs and sounds insane while singing it haha
Early Metallica has lots of raw, youthful energy. Catches lots of people :)
This is THE best metal album of all time. A close second, in my opinion is their next album '....And Justice for All'. I first heard this in the 8th grade when it was released - at that moment in time, I became a metalhead.
I would say Ride The Lightning as 2nd, but ya, you can't go wrong with AJFA. AJFA has some heavy bangers on it too. Just imagine if it had MOP's production.
Just my opinion.. 3 greatest metal albums
1) master of puppets
2) far beyond driven
3) AJFA
I thought it was only me who felt like this about Mop and Justice
Lex, your reactions are the best ever!! Thank you for feeling music the way I do also!! You are not alone!!
I discovered metallica in 88. I was 13 and angry, they helped me alot. Also pantera, slayer, megadeth... so many more. Happy to see the couchgang went to a concert.
Lex you have such an organic physical response to these songs! Its awesome! That was the first thing I noticed when I came across this channel. You two need to get out to a concert at some point. Keep it up
This is my favorite Metallic a song. All four Lovecraftian songs are simply amazing.
👍😁👍Agreed
I just adore this song! Gosh I love this band so much!
Pls do a reaction to The Call of Ktulu by them next , one of my many favs by them :)
Lex is a whole show onto herself lol...keep them vibes up!
Lex gets an exercise workout during the thrash metal songs !!!....its a joy to be apart of her and Brad's journey......love u guys!....
I just love watching Lex rocking out to the music, it really make my day.
Lex...again bringing me my daily dose of smiles 🤩...This time brought about by your new integration of air guitar along with your usual bouncy-bop couch dance...Love it!!!!
Oh yeah, I strongly agree that you guys HAVE to react to this song's live version Seattle 1989...its a perception-changer fo sho!!
Love seeing lex get so much into thrash and bringing out a smile in Brad 👍
The song is not about drugs but Cthulhu Mythos created by HP Lovecraft. A pantheon of ancient deities (the great old ones). One of the most famous of them is Cthulhu, sleeping in the deep sea :
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_Mythos
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_Mythos_deities#Great_Old_Ones
Lex is rockin' just like I did in my brothers '79 Ford Pinto crusin' the strip on a Friday night in the summer of '86...I was 23, cold beer in one hand, Marlboro in the other, my brother tryin' to pass me a doobie while I'm bangin' my head and playin' air guitar...dang we spilled a lot of beer that night!
Great reaction! As someone else stated, this song is based off of Lovecraftian horror. Per Papa Hetfield, it references the old one Cthulu and Daigon. Not by name, but by descriptions in the song. HP Lovecraft is the father of Cosmic Horror. The line 'Not dead which eternal lies, stranger eons death may die.' is a line first mentioned in 'The Call of Cthulu'.
This song live is so good!
Hahaha lex is awesome! We need to see her at a rock concert ASAP!
Oh you do need to see this one either in Seattle 1989 or with the San Francisco Symphony
You Lex are a gold mine ❤️❤️ watching her bounce around makes my day
I love to watch Lex's reaction to this!!!
Bassist Cliff Burton was into H.P. Lovecraft who wrote about mythical creatures. Ktulu, or Cthulhu as it's spelled in the stories, is a creature kinda like the Kracken from Clash of the Titans. Metallica has recorded 3 songs based on this mythical creature; The Thing That Should Not Be" from Master of Puppets, "The Call of Ktulu" the instrumental from Ride the Lightning and "Dream No More" from Hardwired to Self-Destruct. Check out Dream no More, it's heavy like "The Thing" and they also mention Ktulu by name in the song.
top 10 metallica song for sure
Lex you make me laugh my ass off. Literally!
I used to crank this song over the headphones of my Walkman before every one of my high school football games when it first came out. This song just made me want to hit people and I did!!
Great reaction as always!!!!
This whole album is a masterpeice
What a beautiful smile and laugh you have Lex don’t ever stop ❤️😉🌹🙏✌️Awesome
Lex has the soul of a real metal head. Love it!!! May I recommend Metallicas version of Nick Caves “Lover man”.
She is, by her nature, in the upper crust of pure metal heads. You can see it in her soul. So cool she got to discover it through this killer channel. Better late than never!!
Lex is such a rocker! It is her vibe and her tribe! Clear as day.
It is one of my favorite albums out there when I was young I was about 18 I'm 55 now and I still Rock on to that music the only other Band that I feel is modern to my liking is LILIAC🤘
I just love Lex's energy! 😃
I'd be very interested to hear your takes on a couple of other Metallica songs, "The Unforgiven" from the black album and one of their most recent releases, "Now That We're Dead". I don't think you've reacted to those yet, anyway.
The last riff is just pure headbang
This song is bad ass especially live.
Such a heavy tune. Def one of my favs🤘🤘
I never had so much fun watchin someone else listening to music. Lex, u rock !
Lex's cuteness factor is directly proportional to the metal factor of the song, times 2. \m/
"That is not dead which may eternal lie.
And with strange eons even death may die."
There are a lot of references to H.P Lovecraft novels in this song.
Clif Burton was a big Lovecraft fan.
Brad's face is like "In madness Lex dwells" XD
Brad you guys would really enjoy Seattle 89 live performance of this track. It's about the best brutal recording they have ever done. It's raw!
You guys should check out “my friend of misery” by. Metallica.
This song and lyrics are based on HP Lovecraft’s Cthulhu stories. More trivia, the lyrics from the song are also part of Iron Maiden’s album Live After Death (see headstone).
This and Disposable Heros are my absolute favorite Metallica songs!
The Anticipation on Lex face is Priceless!
You guys did the whole MOP album by now. Gotta finish the other early records.
Trapped Under Ice ❄️
Fight Fire With Fire 🔥
One of my fav Metallica songs. When they did it live in Seattle, I think in 89, it was epic
everytime I wanna listen to this song, I play the Seattle 89 version. absolutely insane lol
One of their top 10 all time bangers
This was the 1st Metallica album I got , cassette back in 1987
Lol me too!
Lexy is killing it Brad looks asleep
She's jamming out Brad. 🤘
5:12 that side eye 😆
It's about Cthulhu. An H.P. Lovecraft creature of great renown. One of my favorite Metallica songs ever.
Actually think it's about Dagon influenced by the big C. 🤔
It's so much fun to watch Lexi jam these old school metal songs. Brad always looks like he's being forced to listen because he has to write an essay on it later. My personal metal journey stared like Lexi, just jamming on the music, and gradualy progressed into Brad trying yo understand the lyrics and meanings.
It is based on H.P Lovecrafts stories, early in the song he sings "Great old one", in the stories that Lovecraft wrote the old gods are often called "Great old ones", really mean old gods, kind of like the innate powers in the world that existed before the younger gods of the newer religions like judaism and christianity
Or something along those lines, it is hard to tell exactly sometimes, but Metallica has another song called "Call of Ktulu"(Obviously Cthulhu probably mispelled for some reason but there is a story of Lovecraft called "Call of Cthulhu")
