HP is back with another 14" OMEN laptop, and this one looks pretty fricken good on paper... but can it dethrone the G14? Alex is here to try it out and, with help from LABS, see if this is worth your hard-earned money.

That flex next to the trackpad is wild.... that looks like major deflection....
Another reviewer had similar issues where the flex next to the trackpad registers as clicks if you press on it
@@MyronZhao lmao "flex registers as a click"
feature, not a bug
They're charging a $209 premium for a pair of $115 headphones? Dafuq?
I bet it's because of super special "integrated wireless dongle"!
People pay for convenience. Some people are definitely like "Yeah, I'll pay $200 extra to never have to worry about carrying a dongle or losing it." 😅😅
@@TooFurious4 i think it is because it only comes included with the 4070 version for consumers
But the dongle is inside!!! Obviously that means it needs to be more expensive
the cloud 3 wireless are not $115??? wtf are you talking about???
“Run your finger across it . . . Just like your balls!” 😂
I have this laptop with the Ultra 9, the 4070 and 32GB RAM. I am really enjoying it so far. Many complain that it is not as fast as other machines, which is certainly true, but as someone who is constantly on the go and taking this laptop everywhere, it's a very small compromise. I have encountered absolutely no problems whatsoever and all the games I've been playing run super smooth, again, with very little compromise.
Also the keyboard does look like jelly beans.
I love it.
My 15yo students do too, they think it's *k00l*.
You were able to afford this as a teacher? 😁
@moonkey537 I split it into three installments LoL
Honestly, I was running with a 6 years old legion with a 1050Ti and I was going insane.
Also, I'm European, I feel that maybe the situation is a little less insane here than in the US... teacher-wise at least.
It's not great money but it's not terrible money either
I have this with the Ultra 7, 4060, and 16gb RAM. Got it on sale for $1,499 from Best Buy. Even this version runs VERY well, even on a demanding AAA gaming title like Helldivers 2. Very portable too. Mine doesn't seem to have the same level of flex as the reviews I've seen. It is very sturdy. If you are just comparing raw performance, then it doesn't stand up to the G14 or other larger gaming laptops. But when considering the form factor, portability, battery life, and relative quietness of this laptop, I think it is a winner.
@@CycleDoc675 does it run hot? cpu gpu temp??
Is it noisy ?
I'm starting to think he likes HP laptops.
he either is paid by HP or he simply like the pack(ard)age HP gives
He will die on the XPS hill before he accepts HP
@@ghajik.he likes HP's money 😂
@@ghajik. you act like he doesn't get paid from other brands lol
To be fair they are good (the expensive ones at least)
Not a big fan of soldered RAM trending for these high end laptops.
I understand there's some speed limitations with SODIMMs but it bugs me, too. Zephyrus G14's solution of having half soldered and half SODIMM is still very nice.
@@derkaiser9881But how much is "limitations" vs "buy a new one to upgrade"? 😂
Well intel is trying the apple model in their new experimental models where the RAM is directly on the processor, so probably the future is going that direction.. (Also I have an M2 24gb mac and is incredible the ram management)
@remasterzero Except that Alienware m16 r2 still has RAM slots and Meteor Lake. Yes that Alienware.
Too bad too since the omen 15s before were super easy to crack open and swap ram and storage and even change thermal paste super super easy to upgrade and maintain
I believe Drake also has 14 inches of greatness
$1600 for the specs in this thing is absolutely insane to me.
It's not about that it's super slim and premium in design.
It's a laptop... its never gonna be as good as the price of a desktop
Also no RAM or Wi-Fi upgrades, not even per key RGB, poor battery life... Remind me what is so good about this laptop?
@@cameronbosch1213 The battery life is great. I played fortnite with decent graphics at 2.8K 120fps for about 3 hours until it died which is pretty okay. Watching youtube or movies gets me 5-6 hours, and with the gpu off I get 8 hours.
@@cameronbosch1213it has a cool name and cool text on the display lid…
Anyone else read "pretty fricken good" in Alex's voice?
Damn you hahaha
I’ve seen and felt this laptop and for build quality it’s definitely more flimsy than he lets on the screen is WAY more wobbly than showed and twisting on it again flexes way more than showed, the new g14 was next to it and that one is built significantly better
Yeah, the Omen is not very appealing next to the g14
I feel like big tech channels are not being critical towards the Omen. Only reviewers who were are Gizmotech and Marc Andrew David.
Or the Razer Blade 14.
Does anybody else remember the era of HP graveyards? For a good while many technicians wouldn't bother trying to fix HP computers because they just had too many problems with base components, especially capacitors. The computers were just too costly to repair, so many technicians just wouldn't bother. Computer repair shops in the mid 2000s and early 2010s almost all had giant piles of dead HP laptops
There are always good and bad laptops within different brands. smh
Because they are designed to not be repairable. HP is one of the worst companies for DRM and making it as difficult as possible to service yourself.
@@John-du2mq Well, that's true too. But the reason HP graveyards were a thing is because, of all the manufacturers of the time, they used the least reliable capacitors most often. Those capacitors cost too much to replace than it was worth.
@@GBR9794 How old are you? Did you never see the HP laptop graveyards?
My first gaming PC was an HP Envy which I upgraded with a GTX 970. It died when I over clocked the graphics card.
No RAM slots again. Hard pass. No wifi upgrades possible? Another downside. Laptops of the same size used to be upgradable.
My boss borrowed me an old high end laptop of his to work for him its an asus n43s quad core from freaking 2012. It had 6gb ram but i had a spare 4gb chip at home, promply upgrading it to 8gb dual channel ram running me for the last 3 years. Then i asked boss to buy me an ssd and 16gb ram for like 100 dollars total after conversion giving this old faithful even more years of work. Its amazing what it can do for a 2012 laptop just because it's easily upgradable.
Buy a framework if you want all that...
Same with the 2024 Asus G14. The worst part is that you have to pay $400 for an unnecessary 4070 if you want more than 16gb.
@@jivewig I would rather have no upgradeable RAM than pay Razer's prices. You can get Asus's 32gb ram option with a 4070 for 2k and you can still upgrade the wifi card.
fr fr
I have yet to own an hp product that doesn't arrive defective or fail within 3 months. I've had a printer (died) , a desktop (fried multiple monitors) and a monitor (as compensation for frying monitors, arrived with dead pixels)
No ram slots ain't gonna make me start trying again
Every hp I've had have worked perfectly fine, just to put this out there. If you bought super cheap laptops, I'd expect bad quality in every brand
@@xDontStarveI have had good experience with the cheaper ones and bad with the expensive ones. Had a 900£ envy die on me and a 360 spectre die on my sister in the last 2 years.
My HP Pavilion 16 been kicking it for 4 years now
"NPU because everybody needs AI" i like your sarcasm! 😏
The price to performance is just a real tough sell. My similarly specced ASUS TUF laptop was $700 on sale. Now sure, the screen and keyboard are much worse, but it's a whole computer cheaper
I'd say the screen alone is a huge value add. Maybe the extra portability and battery life. Also was yours having a rtx 4060 cuz that would be crazy deal if new
The 4060 they use in this thing is also very underpowered. They're only feeding it 65w. Makes it run cooler and quieter but you're losing a lot of graphics performance.
Omen! Thank you for a film recommendation, I was literally searching for an hour!
Just recently upgrade myself from a PS4 to an HP Omen 16 a few months ago. Has been fun to play and has no trouble no matter what I play on it. Granted, has taken a while to get use to as I have not pc gamed since the late 90s.
0:21 actually though out of all the headphones that could be included with a laptop they really did choose the best sounding gaming headset for the money there good job!
HP owns HyperX now, so it makes sense to use their own product, it's not Kingston anymore. Also the quality of HP's HyperX Cloud series isn't as good as it was with Kingston.
8:00 LMG please also measure frequency response because lots of HP fans are not THAT loud, but are really peaky in one frequency, making them loud as f**ck.
Omen laptops have been a solid plus for me, i am on my second upgrade of Omen and has not let me down for work or play.
That Blade fingerprint magnet coating has an amazing benefit: if you scratch it: you can buff it out with your thumb.
I put a 4GB Evo Pro in my Omen Transcend, I love this thing
what do you mean? what "blade fingerprint" what 4gb evo pro?
@@Promikes I can't help your inability to read, bro.
That was a pretty *smooth* sponsor transition.
Thank you guys for doing the double sided m.2 nvme drive test. its a no brainer to just do that if you have on hanging around on set specifically for that purpose and you already had the back off anyway. seems like the future will be littered with tiny issues like this and just having a definitive yes/no seems like a no brainer for the upcoming ltt-labs-review-comparison website.
Really wish you guys would list some key specs in the description, sometimes I'll miss something in the video and scrubbing through it to find something like the price can be a pain.
Here are the 2 things missing from this laptop for me:
-32BG of Ram
-Touch screen
And 2 other things I wish it was different
-AMD processor instead of an Intel processor
-Shine-through keycaps instead side bleeding keycaps
Intel Meteor Lake is pretty promising actually, in terms of both performance and battery life. Outside of that, this thing is mega overpriced and the fact that you pay $1600 for 16gb of non upgradable ram is ridiculous.
@@Polyeith I agree that it is more promising performance-wise but TDP-wise still slightly behind for the same performance as an AMD processor.
@@Polyeith non-upgradable ram is a problem. But, I think it's usual at 14" laptop, sadly.
I have a G14 2024 with AMD 8945HS. I'm actually not a fan of the CPU performance....Seems to be too weak for CPU bounded stuff due to only having 16mb L3. The i7 155H is the faster processor in that regard... :\
If you're playing regular games, the AMD CPU is fine and can out perform the Intel in many titles. Competitive gamers (League, CS2, OW, Valorant) who want a small laptop should avoid the AMD option though.
Edit: The 8945HS also gets super hot unless you default it to windows base power plan.. Intel power states and down clocking are better for non gaming IMO.. Browsing the internet in bed just sucks on the G14.
Wish I could have gotten a 14" Zephyrus with an Intel chip.. Would have fit my needs better.
Touch screen? I don't know anyone who actually uses the touchscreen they have on their laptop. I also don't want fingerprints all over my laptop screen. Nobody I've met with a 2-in-1 ever uses the tablet mode, either.
I've actually been using this laptop (same spec too) for the past month and agree with Alex that it's a phenomenal machine. I will say that I don't care for the speakers, not a fan of down firing ones, and I do miss having a touch screen as opposed to my old laptop. The keyboard also took a little bit for me to get used to as well and I'm still not completely sold on the legend, but it is immensely better than the ones on similar Asus laptops. Performance wise, I get stable frames in games like Forza Horizon 5, Horizon FW, and Destiny 2, and thats all I can really ask for.
I have an Omen that I purchased 2 years ago, Im still pretty happpy, runs most titles fine. Good product.
great video like always. also i woul like to see a review on the headphones :)
yo! this and lenovo slim 5 are absolute mvps! i love what are they doing (like 2xm.2) with these even through others might not like it as much. hope this laptop gonna have success
I understand the look that they were trying to implement with the keycaps. They're basically supposed to be like the HyperX pudding keycaps but using laptops keys but it doesn't really work very well visually. I think if they had thinner borders around the key it might've looked a lot nicer.
6:30 and that is the sound of a good keyboard. Everytime I hear "the only good keyboard is the one on Macbooks" I say "you've clearly no taste or you've never tried a mechanical keyboard or a good laptop keyboard" (Ps. I'm also a pianist, so the sound to me matters). HP has really upgraded their keyboard in the last years making them low profile but still clicky as a mechanical.
14 inches is a little big for my taste. Difficult to operate and lug around.😂
14 inches is just about right for me
Bought one a little over a week ago and it is great for media consumption haven’t had a chance to game on it yet. That OLED screen is nice. Snagged mine for $1400.
Are you testing oled VRR/freesyc/gsync flickering?
On some oled panels in monitors and laptops you unboxed have a terrible vrr flicker on dark parts.
1:40 When Alex talked about the USB A ports. I audibly laughed.
Am I the only one or did Alex completely not mention how big the screen is and what the resolution is. for anyone that's curious it's listed as 14in 2880x1800 OLED. I'll keep my OLED Slim 14.5, but nice to see more 14 oleds.
lower wattage gpu, that's why it runs cool. Get G14 instead
Funny how no one is talking about how underpowered the GPU is.
that sponsor spot was amazing
i bet the white one with keyboard light set to max white just looks much much better
I actually really like the look of the keyboard
Would have been nice if the Labs would briefly test hardware like this with Linux and report any issues. You can play the vast majority of Windows games on Linux now, so knowing if all the hardware is Linux supported on a gaming laptop would be a great service that no-one else is doing (well, maybe Phoronix but they have limited resources unlike LTT).
When will gaming 14" feature more than 8GB of vram?!
Gotta buy last year's g14 for that. I wonder why no other manufacturers put anything better than 4070 in their 14 inch gaming laptop
@@mcslender2965 its probably thermal constraints. A lot of these gpus are already pushing it in a 14 inch form factor.
For 1080p gaming 8gb is fine
@heroninja1125 How is it? The Razer Blade 14 could feed its GPU the maximum allowable power limit which is only stopped earlier because of that stupid voltage limit.
I swear, these OEMs are enticing almost nobody to upgrade...
@@ElAnikilador001 yeah it's enough for 1440p too. I have a 4gb vram GPU and i can do 1080p at high to ultra settings no problem.
Having a usb c as power deliver is already a plus but does other wireless hyperX work with the integrated dongle?
That sponsor transition was legendary
That 140W brick looks quite a bit bigger than Framework's 180W brick! And no removable cable? Nice that USB C is being used to carry more power now and it's actually being used to power more gaming laptops.
Not a bad laptop if you need gaming performance in a smaller form factor. Shame that it doesn't let you upgrade much more than the storage. I do like the double-sided SSD test too! I think I had a laptop at some point that felt like it didn't have much space underneath the laptop, but it's nice knowing when you're able to put more storage than it might typically come with.
Opted for the ASU’s 2024 G14 instead….beautiful and powerful
I like the look of the keyboard, personally
Haven't we seen this model already?
Im sticking to my 17" g17 strix. Even though its slower, I have 32gb of ram, 4tb of nvme storage, 2 huge heatsinks and fans, and im able to upgrade it. I have my desktop thats in progress for gaming at home. And the laptop for going somewherr else and still being able to get 144 frames it almost every game at 1080p.
so there is no way to use headphones with anything but this laptop? thanks hp))
He scared me when he said balls 😂
I'm going to throw in my hat on the "Why no upgradeable RAM" camp. The prior explanation of "connector losses, et al makes it slow" just ... doesn't leave me satisfied, at all.
Because we have DDR5 desktop memory hitting these high transfer speeds without all that much drama, and the trace runs there are MUCH longer.
You can't tell me that just because the socket is smaller suddenly means signal quality is worse, or that the weird Dell proprietary low profile connector "magically" solves the problem that literally only seems to exist on DDR5 SoDIMM laptops.
So lucky for not having the code for Manscaped be "short"
Whatttt!? You don't like the look of the keyboard? It's what drew me to mine, I love how the keyboard looks and feels. Guessing it's either a long or hate thing
I felt like I got smacked in the face with that manscaped ad transition.
I MISS the days when a top tier laptop was $1000-1400, now every entry level PoS is over $1000. The pricing is nuts, I'm never paying that!
The IR sensor on the camera may be causing the red/purple tint on your skin.
Please explain the colorcheck analysis. Ive never understood that.
Have you thought about training an A.I voice model, to sound somewhat like the different hosts? I honestly think it would be fun to see if anyone spots the corrections, if you ended up doing that.
I almost did a spit take on that first sponsor segue LOL
Finally an Omen that pays respect to the first Omen's design
Love the wallpaper on the tv. What is it?
this looks like a really nice "dual mode" laptop, it looks sleek enough for normal business use, but packs the punch for productivity and gaming :D
He seems so high and out of it at certain points!
Without sale in USA it cost the same as the 2024 g14 which is better in almost everything. Although it goes on sale for steeper than when the 2024 g14 did so just wait for sale if you want it
Or you can buy a Razer Blade 14 from 2023 which is often on sale.
@@cameronbosch1213 yeah but so is the 2023 G14 and its way better for the price especially once you go w rtx 4080 and above. And the 4070 config of the g14 2024 is still a better value than 2023 Blade
the chasis looks good, the screen hinge stiffness concerns me.
i dont think it is a better buy than a 2022/2023 g14....
i also dont think its as powerful in games either.......
considering the price.
It's like a Zephyrus G14 with an OLED screen, and I love the G14 and OLED screens. I just wish it weren't so expensive though. The lack of VRR might be a dealbreaker though, as much as I want an OLED.
it's more like the Legion Slim 14.5 OLED, the G14 is much smaller than either of these
The 2024 Zephyrus G14 is better in almost everyway. Higher wattage GPU, lighter, has VRR (Gsync) on the OLED display, better speakers. Only major flaw to the Omen is the larger, non USB C charger
This can’t even compete with 19 inches of venom
How does this compare with the lenovo legion slim 5 14 inch with 105w tgp 4060?
Alex, you need to start calling out HP for only making Canadian Multilingual keyboard layouts available in Canada. Most of us want ANSI layout. Make it a thing! Just mention it, get the issue some visibility!
Test the zhyprus speakers they're great
Looks great but I want the next iteration of Lenovo Slim 5 to jump, on one of this
The soldered ram is supposed to be more efficient than slotted not sure how much .would be terrible if your ram failed but seems like they are following Apple business model trade ins and so forth I guess it’s easier for a technician to fix by replacing the logic board entirely recycling the other parts . Good for resale- or trade in as you are limited. Upgrading would require a new laptop trade ins etc . Instead of more ram besides you were all ready limited by the other parts so I don’t see anything wrong with this as long as it’s ram equals to the GPU or target consumer.
I'd love to see you do the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14.5"
I love my HP ENVY ... American ... I put 64 GB of Fury RAM ... it is in my channel.. this is awesome Mate... GO SHORT CIRCUIT
I'll stick with the ROG Zephyrus G14. Also, no mention of the chassis issue above the touchpad? Any pressure on that support area between the spacebar and touchpad causes a left click input...
Between this and 19 inches of Venom, I'll be set.
That sponsorship made my bits tingle.
I have zero intention of buying a gaming laptop, but let me tell you, this is the absolute definition of cool!
If the keyboard is like my ASUS you can make it look like anything you want. Different patterns or customize every single key to any colors you want
4 zone RGB though. Better than Asus Zephyrus but not Razer level
Yayyy laptop review with alex
A cable in the USB port isn’t going to interfere with my mouse. The power cable might though
Wow another laptop how exciting..
The keyboard really fucks me up lmao imagine taking this to work
The ad caught me SO off guard LOL
I really dont like the new keyboard.
but nice to see it got a redesign
Once you get hands on this and the G14, the G14 is very clearly a class above. At the quality of the omen 14, it would sell best under 1000 USD.
My suggestions for it: get rid of lid flex, don't have the silly decal on the palm rest and ugly keyboard, and reduce the chin just a little. It will be very competitive then.
No gsync/freesync is wild on new hardware
Definetely The lenovo legion slim 5 14 oled has to be looked at aswell, many of these companies are making 14 inch "gaming" laptop and would be interesting on how it competes with others.
anyone know where i can get the skin on the Macbook shown in the video?
Very funny that YT decided to throw in an ad for Lenovo during this review of a HP laptop.
Yup, I'd rather a Lenovo Legion to an HP Omen.
Remember, HP is still hostile against self repairs and upgrading, careful if you’re considering this product.
Especially trying to change something like the keyboard if a specific letter is not working anymore.
What about Windows Studio Effects on NPU vs. Geforce (Nvidia's own solution) incl. power consumption?
That segue to the sponsor... I can't f*ing laugh that loud man, there are people sleeping over here xD
I realise those headphones might not be the best in the world but did you have to chuck 'em on the floor quite that hard?
Is that the pixel 8 pro with a ghost case on it? ❤
I remember using a phrase similar to the title of this video before... only replace "14 inches" with "2 inches"...
Lol. W
Watching this on my omen transcend 14
doesn’t that giant OneXPlayer “handheld” [tablet] Linus just reviewed also have a Core 155H? And cost much less? And also work as a tablet, or gaming handheld?
Are the screen and keyboard really worth that much lmao
No need to through out the boxes every time like a teenager. Simply you can put it on the side . 😊
