Funeral Blues
WH Auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
This poem gets me every time...it's like it's spoken on a frequency in tune with my tear glands.
Whipped23 well said.
beautifully said
I read this at my brave and wonderful husband's funeral yesterday 😢
+Ravenstorm1999 i'm sorry
Ravenstorm1999 hope you are doing good. It gets easier with time.
What a beautiful tribute to your Love. Blessings and love to you.
Deepest sympathies xxxx
What's saddest about this clip is that they didn't feel that they could tell people how much that they loved each other until he was dead...
Isn’t that how it mostly always is? Don’t know what we got till it’s gone? I want to see the film.
Talked about this poem during our English lesson, I loved it, and it sounds even better with his accent
Guess what i do
same
I cry everytime at this scene. With John's voice trembling with emotion as he reads it, and those deep sad eyes. I just feel like I'm there in the ceremony listening to him read it. It's very moving, one of the high points of the film.
John’s delivery of Auden’s funeral poem is 🥇
pack up the Moon and dismantle the Sun... cry every time I see this part of the film.
Brilliant! I felt this way when I lost both my parents and my younger brother within six months of each other. My adored darling brother died of ALS. At the time I really wanted to "Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun." We all know of course, that good will come to us again but at that moment of sadness.
The stars are not wanted now,'........'For nothing now can come to any good.' I know the feeling.
I love that poem and this scene...what a tribute
I Totally Agree! Garrett was an Amazing Character!! Terrific Movie! One of the BEST!
This poem speaks such volumes, 21 years ago at the age of 18 I read it at my dad's funeral to over 200 people. A day I've never forgotten .. thank you W H Auden for your amazing words. Such a shame I only had 3 years with my dad God bless xx
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.:-(
I know what you mean....exactly x
It would be easier if your love died when your loved one died.. but it doesn't x
Makes me weep every single time...
This was read for my daughters funeral 11 years ago, she was just 2 years and 5 months old.
It is so beautiful to see that it is still so popular.
A very big thank you.
💐
I cannot conceive that anyone can write
something THAT beautiful, unbelievable
John Hannah did a brilliant job in this movie particularly this song. Always and never fails to bring tears to my eyes. His emotion... his grief was so real in this scene you have to wonder what he had to channel in order to appear this genuine.
Song?? Song ?
It’s a POEM by the great WH AUDEN Funeral blues - it’s not some old blues song! Ya clown!
I recited this for english :( the room was with Awkward silence for 5 minutes after that, Just silence, no clapps or anything, just silence, no chairs moving or whispers in the distance, just silence
trinity rox exactly the correct response, with tears
Yes as others have said arguably the best moment in the film this poem.
"He quite liked Funerals. He was thrilled at the thought of attending a ceremony one actually had an outside chance of being involved in"
This movie is one of the last movies I watched with my husband and I told him I was going to read this poem at his funeral and he said he would read it at mine not soon after he passed away at the age of 36 and I had the minister read this poem for me ,this is really how one feels when they lose the love of their life. Thank you WH Auden
'I thought the love would last forever. I was wrong...'
the father's face at 1:33 is one of the best portrayals of a parents grief of their childs death in a movie, ever.
I read this at my grandfather's funeral. My favorite poem of all time (thanks to this movie)
my absolute favorite poem, forever.
and John Hannah does it so well.
Beautiful.
What a performance, what a poem, utter class.
Such a beautifully touching poem, which I read at my dear dad's funeral 11 years ago. I could hardly finish through my tears.
send love
i love the way Mathew/John said my north, south, east and west cos of his adorable accent
This Poem is So Moving!! Stops me in My Tracks, Every time I Hear It!!
"Four Weddings and a Funeral" has become generally recognized as one of the great films of the last 30 years. Absolutely terrific performances by Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell and the supporting cast too numerous to mention by name here. Written by the great British writer, Richard Curtis, it's intellectual (as evidenced by this W.H. Auden poem) and humorous. Richard Curtis also wrote what I consider to be the very best of the great British sitcoms, "The Vicar of Dibley".
Absolutely beautiful.Humans have the unique ability to touch a life with words or to take a life with greed and anger.
The sentiment mirrors mine for my sister whom passed away this morning after 2.5 yr treatment for appendiceal cancer.
This was a great moment and superbly spoken.
This is probably my favourite poem, so powerful. John Hannah read it beautifully.
I absolutly loved this. So pure, so true so genuine.
This is such a great, beautiful, genuine reading of the poem. I must have watched this scene a dozen times now. John Hannah did a wonderful job.
This is possible my favourite moment in any film ever. Simply beautiful …
I wish so much I had written this poem, it's the perfect expression of a feeling of loss that is in so many ways beyond words.
This poem is so perfect in every way, every word fits and every line flows and then there's John Hannah reciting it so masterfully... This is excellent.
this is one of my favorite poems, and this reading of it is by far the best i've ever heard
because its beautiful
bless. Always brings tears to my eyes.
I want this read out at my funeral. Preferably by someone with a Scottish accent. He reads it with such conviction and emotion, he is a brilliant actor and conveys the emotion perfectly. People who cannot accept the orientation of the character, and who cannot accept that this poem is for any lost loved ones are blind.
Wow...what honesty, how in that moment you really feel as though happiness will never dawn again.
Best scene of the movie...and the poetry is beyond words.
simply wonderful, It gets me every time I here it.
He recites this magnificenttly. Very pure, beautiful moment in an otherwise plain film
Just beautiful
beautiful....such a genius poet
Beautiful.
Extraordinary poem -- the poem, itself, stops all the clocks.
I'm currently studying Auden in one of my Graduate School courses. To say that this is a touching poem would be an understatement. I couldn't help but to have tears in my eyes. It's so moving and honest. "Funeral Blues" has an excellent way of evoking emotion. Additionally, I must say that John Hannah's reading of this piece was wonderful.
thanks for posting -beautiful lovely scene
Never heard of this poem till in my college english class, fell in love with it and I decided to write my research paper on it. Very emotional and filled with much feelings, I love it
great film, great poem. love is all around. just look for it.
This is the only poem wich makes me cry within just a few seconds. And John does it so good. It feels almost like he's feeling the pain for real.
Just so impressive, heartbreaking and sad.
i really love the part of the "let aeroplanes cirkle all morning overhead, scribbling in the sky the message 'he is dead'.
!!!!
Beautiful poem
Very powerful: both the poem and the acting.
Beautiful. Perfect.
If I ever met John Hannah, I would get him to repeatedly recite this to me. He reads it SO well.
great acting john hannah!!!you´re the best british actor
i just watched the movie and just loved the poem, very beautiful.
I wanted to read this at my dad's funeral, it was his favourite movie and the only one I ever saw him cry at. RIP Dad. It's been two years now and I still miss you every single day
Amazing. Incredibly powerful.
That last verse is so sad. But very beautiful.
I lost my best friend last year to a heart condition and I really do feel the love in this poem. He truely was my greatest friend and I do hope he is watching me now.
xxx
Lovely clip, thank you
😢 so beautiful
every time, no matter how much I try to disconnect from it, I ball like an infant. A consummate performance of a remarkable poem.
Beautiful indeed
Love this poem.
I studied this poem at school many years ago. It's always had a massive effect on me. It's so simplistic you know he didn't care how it was perceived when he wrote it. He just put his feelings on paper, for all to see.
I've seen the movie 7 times, and this has made me cry every time
beautiful..really
The best scene of the film by far. If anyone doubts the tremendous, overwhelming power of poetry, they should see this film.
Perfect scene. And yes, John Hannah recites it perfectly.
He reads this so beautifully; it makes me cry every time.
My husband passed away and this poem is so perfect. He was my everything, my childrens' everything. I thank G-d everyday because I had the pleasure and privlage of knowing him for over 20 years - I met him when I was only 19 took our time to become established and my children were only 4 & 5 when he passed. So sad and heartbreaking. Anyone who has nothing good to say about this poem or performance has never lost anyone close to them.
That is the best part of the film in my opinion. The poem is so beautiful and it is so sad. Love this scene!
I love this poem sooo much!
I love the way the rhythm breaks on "I was wrong" - gives me chills....
Yes I agree. I've heard it so many times but still every time I hear it there's a lump in my throat.
Always and forever gives me the chills and makes me cry...me being the "American" girl too. I honestly don't think anyone else can recite this any better. Thank you for sharing. :)
I really need to read more poetry!!!!!!!
My english teacher (who is btw a man that never shows emotion) and i played this to him. and i saw the faintest sparkle of a tear in his eye. its such a powerful poem!
André Sousa Bessa brought me here... RIP
beautifully done, gorgouse use of words, expertly portrayed
I have seen so many short clips on this movie here on you tube... definitely makes me want to go back and watch the whole Four Weddings movie
I read this poem at my grand father's funeral... Today again, that's exactly what I feel... Nothing can heal that pain...
Probably the best thing about this scene is that it helped to bring back Auden's works and to spread it around the world. And Auden was such a good poet...
Thankyou. It's nice to be appreciated
this poem touches me in such an intense way....
unbelievable...
amazing poem so fitting have it on my phone i listen to it every day ... this is actually what i want to say......
i love the poem....
The actor is John Hannah who was born in East Kilbride in Scotland so in broad terms it is a Scottish accent, it is also a lowlands accent and an urban one too. The nearest large town is Glasgow so there are touches of that in it too.
so beautiful, i cry everytime.
best part of the movie.. so raw and heartfelt
I cried. - love that poem - says exactly what im thinknig at the minute
On New Years...I listened thinking of how Many of Our beloved Lost Souls, MIA's Fallen Dead, Family members... Friends & acquaintances...this Poem speaks about...to me..Sadly...I Cry & Laugh but....mostly wish I could say I Love You to Their Face Once Again....I'm So Sorry we couldn't...God Bless You All I Really am Sorry for My Short-comings.....
Breaks my heart every time. He loved him and could never tell anyone...
Epic performance here by John Hannah
this will never fail to make me cry. john hannah's acting is outstanding and so so real. you can truly *feel* the character's pain. it was upsetting to see yet another gay character die on the screen but this time it didn't seem wrong. the death was key in the film and shows the pure love between those two men. incredible.
