I was involved with the Martha Graham Theater but not as a dancer, but as a singer. 1974. What a privilege to see genius in action.

I'm a senior citizen. NYC/NY'er, born & raised. I first saw Graham's dance company in the 1970's. I actually saw her carried out on stage by male dancers like a year before her death. She lived almost to age 100. She died some 30 years ago. In the 1970's, I was involved with her prima male dancer. Mario Delamo. I'm glad you found/discovered her.

maria s keep in mind the age range here will interpret it that way because back in the day that was the association. Most of the older generation has no idea the level of art and strength today’s pole dancers have.

Just read about Martha Graham; incredible woman. In retrospect I can see now only how her dancing methods influenced contemporary dance, but her insistence on prioritizing expression over shape and form was such a perfect fit for the arrival of film. Ballet makes sense from far away, but using the floor, the face and the torso makes more sense for cinematic recording.

  •  Před 10 lety

    Wow.

  •  Před 3 lety

I used to dance with Erick Hawkins in the 197O's.
Erick was the great romantic and erotic passion of Martha's entire incarnation.
Erick and Martha fell in love when Erick joined her company as a guest star in 1938.
He was around 27... and Martha was into her 4O's.
Which was a bit scandalous back then.
When he joined her company he became her first male dancer.
    Which revolutionized her Art.
For now the entire world of the relationship between men and women became open to her.
The Graham Crackers hated him from the moment he arrived in Martha's world.
For he took up all of her attention and focus.
She also asked him to teach them Ballet classes.
As he was the first student at Balanchine's new School Of American Ballet.
And the first student allowed to teach classes at the school.
He would tell the Graham Crackers to hold their arms out at a 45 degree angle.
Which offended them... because they were organic dancers... not mathematical dancers.
They danced from their vaginas... not from their heads.
They were together for 12 years... and they got married in the last couple of years.
Before the legendary fight in that London hotel.
Which precipitated all of Martha's suffering woman characters in the 195O's.
After Erick left her... because she gave him no other choice.
It was also Erick who introduced Martha to the Greek classics.
Which she tended to focus on after he left.
Erick had precociously received a scholarship to Harvard at the age of 15.
But since he thought he might be a bit young... he waited a year and entered at 16.
He graduated at 2O in 193O with a degree in the Classics.
Just in time for the Great Depression.
But he was brilliant and beautiful and bold.
Many people consider those 12 years to have given birth to many of Martha's best works.
Such as their love dance APPALACHIAN SPRING.
All of Martha's later partners were based on the template of Erick Hawkins.
They were both soul mates... who loved and wounded each other deeply.
Which will have to be karmically resolved in other lifetimes.
Erick used to tell me that when he first saw Martha perform FRONTIER.
He knew that he was watching genius.

      @ritasantos1646 Před 9 lety +2

It's not supposed to be perfect, it's supposed to make you feel something. That, let me say, is pure art. It's reality, no perfection, no such thing as "beautiful".

mark prescott Yes, it is definitely beautiful but I didn't say that because the person who commented hasn't quite understood what dance is supposed to be. It's supposed to transmit feelings first of all. And yeah, it's beautiful. But, since i dance, of course i like doing it so i didn't even mention it and just tried to explain the essence of it. :)
